Hello you sound very interesting :Your work at home sounds like it may be more intense than at class. :kaioken:You certainly sound like you have a fire for the martial arts.

Yes I find the odd week off helpful. And for those who train heavily time of is a neccesity to prevent overtraining and its problems. :idea:Another method is to train in cycles of varying intensity.Or to crosstrain in different but complementary activity from time to time.

Heavy weights are not recommended for those whos growth plates are still active. The pressure on the plates may prohibit them from normal growth.

How is the flexibility in your lower back? Maybe you should do some more stretching before you start running. Running in ankle weights may have changed the mechanics of your stride.

:eek:This all sounds really interesting. Where can I get a sarong?
-
:nod:I am also interested in maybe begining Kama. :karate:The only kama kata that has been taught at my school has been Ni Cho Gama Kata. :???:Can anyone tell me if there are many other traditional kama katas commonly practiced in their areas?

Kobudo is so cool. I plan to really enjoy this area of the board.

:spitlaugh:Small weapon hmmm, :spitlaugh:the hairpin. I have seen pictures of wicked looking hairpins used in the hair styles of the Japanese samuri era that where also used as weapons. It has been a very long time since I have seen a hairpin in actual use. Hair being so much shorter now and all. And then too, we don't wear the kind of hats that require them.

Some kubotan lore: it may possibly be descended from the Yawara. A small stick, usually pointed on both ends, designed do fit neatly into the fist. I forgot who's key ring on their kubotan was too heavy for the ignition but that one must be great for a flailing attack lilke the one done by a nunchaku.

I have done varying amounts of work with: bo, sai, tonfa, nunchaku, cane, and kuboton. :???:Has anyone done much work with the cane.
-
:weirdlook:Much of what we do paralels that done by a California group the name of which totally escapes me. :nod:Memory is not one of my strong suits. It is the Nishiuchi drills I most commonly do on my own.

Hello, I am new and while strolling through the postings I found your name to be interesting. :brow:That may sound a bit odd but then I may be a bit odd at times. :karate:They are very serious about their arts. It was my loss to not develope more of an interest in the martial arts for another 20 years.

Hello, I am new and was strolling through the postings and your name interested me. I live near a Greek Orthodox Church and one of the ways they preserve their heritage is through an annual festival. And they are very nice festivals to attend. :pony:I am sure I will enjoy reading your future postings. -
:kaioken:Yes, I too have seen boards where a lot of :argue:goes on. I hope to see many interesting posts from you in the future.

Kodek, please come back and tell us of your explorations. :idea:I think one of the greatest ways to learn is to ask questions. I also think another great way to learn is to listen to what others learn in their questionings. Sai

:evil:Something I have learned from watching our junior students spar when there is a height difference between the opponents that on one level seems fairly basic and on another interesting is this: :bawling:Shorter vs taller the shorter sparring partner scores most effectively using techniques aimed at chudan level regardless of the technique involved. :kaioken:The taller partner rains down blows upon the shorter partner aimed at head level. Sometimes scoring at will. If the shorter student has good headblocking skills the taller student can be shut out. Allways remember to take advantage of watching any opponent before hand to see what their strong techniques are. Watching can be a very effective way of learning.

:idea:Looking at the postings after thought I remembered someting I once heard someone say: "If your kick is not fast enough to make your gi snap it is a poor kick." :karate:And it would seem part of the snap is the all important recoil. Then to many of us have a particular kick we are more proficent at then others. Best to practice weaker kicks on opponents less likely to catch them. Sai

This is a very interesting thread of discussion. My opinion is breaking builds confidence. :karate:The first time I broke a board I felt so alive inside. And at subsequent breaking seminars over the years I really believe that breaking is an emmense confidence builder. Most of the younger kids (and many adults) are afraid of the board the first time. But when they do break it they really get charged up. And there is often a carryover into things outside the dojo. Some have more confidence trying and doing other things they encounter in life. Sai
