  1. Bo and sai. Does it show? Sai
  2. The difference you are noticing is probably the stances. We use kokutsu dachi in the opening moves. In shi-to we used neko ashi dachi. _________________ Get a better life, get karate. 3. Come on Jiggy hockey may not be our thing but then we probably have interests that the hockey players amongst us do not have.
  4. OKAY FOR THE RECORD I AM A 40 SOMETHING FEMALE KARATE STUDENT. Does that help anyone?:pony: And I meant no offense to anyone. Boy 75 hits on this thread and it has only been posted less than 8 hours. Someone is interested. It would be nice if all school would let students wear black pants at least part of the time. But some traditional schools do not. It is white only. Younger female students seem to have less problems dealing with this problem than do some of the older female students who have not done anything active in quiet a while. 5. Okay picture this:it is a picture but I don't know how to put it here. Doing your patriotic duty Dog squatting on a sidewalk leaving a pile. The pile of poo just happens to be strategically placed on a newspaper with a full page shot of Osama.
  6. At one point in time I was eating healthy and not eating junk. Then I got really sick and to make up for me not keeping anything in they started dumping sugar in my tea. Guess what? My sweet tooth woke up. And now it refuses to go back to sleep.
  7. Ah well if one type of martial art fit everyone there would not be thousands of styles.
  8. In the shotokan section a story/legend was shared. It was suggested that maybe that should belong in here (philosophy). So that being said does anyone have any stories/myths/legends about the martial arts to share?
  9. Piastre when I was in a shi-to ryu group we did it that way. When the group split and some of us relearned the Heians and went Shotokan we changed the order.
  10. I try to offset the height difference with extra flexibility.
  11. Okay this may get a bit personal and embarrasing but here goes. With the wearing of white gi's how do you deal with that time of the month?
  12. Back of the head shots are a big no no at my school. Shots to the back - well it is not an acceptable target area but when people turn to avoid roundhouse kicks they sometimes turn in such a way as to catch them with their back. Actually I have seen many people turn a bit to avoid a roundhouse kick and wind up taking them to the tushie.
  13. Oh yeah a leading leg front kick can start a flurry of advancing moves very effectively. I chase a guy a foot taller than me clear across the dojo one day.
  14. So for those who are familiar with Ed Parker's kenpo what do you think about the work Ed Parker Jr is currently doing?
  15. This is interesting and very thought provoking. It is a very deep and extremely serious subject. I can see both points of view. Cultural differences are something that is easy to overlook and easy to misunderstand. The age of chivalry may not be dead, but it can be deadly.
  16. Well Kickchick, the only other "female" issue that comes readily to mind is one that was asked in another site. "How do you deal with that time of the month - white pants and all?" But I am a bit leery of introducing that in here as a thread.  What do you think?
  17. How have I managed to miss this topic so long? Well, I am very likely to have a cane with me. I use it for balance and to probe uneven areas before I trip on them. And when I don't have my cane I have my kuboton. But with the kind of area I live in I think my best weapon is between my ears. I think my judgement of wether or not to go past an area or go out at certain times of day is my ultimate best weapon.
  18. I find it interesting that Heian Godan is the most difficult kata for you students because of the jump Tobias. Maybe it is because we have never stressed the height of the jump in that kata. Heian Yondan for some reason seems to be the point where our kids started having problems with good execution. So many of them can do well to the point of the first side kick than fall apart on the second one. We do have in place some very basic (almost pre-katas)katas more oriented to kids really reinforcing zenkutsu dachi. Katas even more basic than a taikokyu. I have encountered (on-line) some schools who have classes oriented toward older adults. And they do the same basic katas but in the more advanced katas the cirriculum changes.
  19. Okay I was the last one to submit a joke but it has been a while and this one is one for the blonde women about the blonde men. Blonde Construction Worker An Irishman, a Mexican and a blonde guy were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch and the Irishman said, "Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch, I'm going to jump off this building." The Mexican opened his lunch box and exclaimed, "Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time I'm going to jump off, too." The blonde opened his lunch and said, "Bologna" again. If I get a bologna sandwich one more time I'm jumping too." The next day the Irishman opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage and jumped to his death. The Mexican opened his lunch, saw a burrito and jumped too. The blonde opened his lunch, saw the bologna and jumped to his death as well. At the funeral the Irishman's wife was weeping. She said, "If I'd known how really tired he was of corned beef and cabbage I never would have given it to him again!" The Mexican's wife also wept and said, "I could have given him tacos or enchiladas! I didn't realize he hated burritos so much." Everyone turned and stared at the blonde's wife... "Hey, don't look at me," she said, "he makes his own lunch."
  20. Hey I like that Jack. How about living like we can make earth into a heaven?
  21. Unfortunately this type of thing happens all too often. It is a frequent occurence in the karate world as well. And probably a major cause of "McDojo's".
  22. Allthough the sensei who initiated the question in the other site was being very serious isn't life better when you have a sense of humor?
  23. Shadow loves to "help" me tie my belt. Sometimes when I am stretching she lays down on the floor beside me. She has fast little paws. When she is mad at someone she pounces on their foot and swats them. She has a double, a triple, and now a quadruple swat.
