  1. My main style is TKD. I have never had the pleasure to train with anyone who knows Kung Fu, but I think our punches and kicks are a bit stronger. IMO I don't think any other styles forms (kata's) are as fluid or as beautiful as Kung Fu. Plus Kung Fu practioners make better movies!! Good luck!
  2. When we stand-up spar Pads: head, hands, feet, groin protection, mouth protection. The higher the rank the heavier the contact. Unless you are trying to teach a new student (who thinks they are the next Bruce Lee) a lesson From the thighs up are target areas.
  3. A Black Belt is not something you wear...it is something you become.
  4. Many parents put there kids in martial arts just for discipline purposes. If he is taking it to extremes then the school owner needs to step in and take care of the situation. If this person is a good Instructor and is not degrading the students then it might be a nice change of pace for them. I have seen Instructors that say "Great!", or "Good job!" anytime a student did anything, and that is not always the case. Being a tough, strict Instructor is not a bad thing, if it is done correctly. Good luck to you!
  5. Diet is the important thing. Excercises alone is not going to take the weight off if you are eating large combo meals at McDonalds 3 times per day. Try a higher protein, lower carb diet. Eat 6 small meals every 3 hours. MAKE SURE YOU EAT BREAKFAST! Contact me and I will be happy to help out where I can. As far as the uniform...some schools require you wear a uniform...talk to the Instructor. Best of Luck!
  6. Ok...I am new to the site. Guess I shouldn't post school owner questions here...sorry folks! The chicks, nachos, and beer idea is a good one though!
  7. I would like to get your opinion on testing with real wood vs rebreakable boards. I find the rebreakable boards to be strong, and they have to be hit in the middle to break. Other than the obvious pros and cons (less mess with rebreakable, less storage, not killing trees, etc) I would like to know how you feel. Thanks in advance for your opinion!
  8. You can't recreate every scenario in class. What you can do it lots of repetition, so you create muscle memory. We have had both womens only, and coed classes in our school. I find very little difference in how they spar, because most of the time the men take it easy when sparring the women. But, if you practice defense moves over and over, and develop muscle memory...they will be there for you when you need them. My opinion! Good Luck!
  9. Sounds like snake oil to me too! The only way I know of to get faster is practice, practice, practice!! It would be nice if someone could bottle it up, but then everyone could do it. Anything worth having is worth working for. BTW, I am from the CTF also! Good luck!
  10. My advice is not to get into a ring until you are comfortable in one. Sounds like you are talking about sport fighting. You should be well versed in your art before entering a ring...you want your focus on your opponent, not on "what do I do now". Keep practicing!! Good Luck!
  11. If you learn forms (kata's) where you train practice these with intensity. Jumping rope is a great workout! Try doing plyometrics for your legs. Some examples: 1. Keeping feet together, and jumping forward as high, and as far as you can go. 2. Start in a front stance (forward stance), bring feet together, and jump straight up (extending your arms) as high as you can. Lunges are also great for legs. Squats without weights (lots of reps) will get your sore too! Good luck!
  12. Maurice Smith did well in the UFC and he is a stand up fighter! I saw him front kick a guy one time, and it looked like a truck had hit him! The other responses are right. UFC style fights are a sport. Different people train for different reasons. In our school we train to defend ourselves not to fight UFC fighters.
  13. Did you have to pay association dues at your old school? If you did, and they have not expired then you should be eligible to still compete in their tournaments. If you still have a good relationship with your old Instructor call and ask him/her. If it is an open tournament you should be able to enter regardless of your affiliation with a school. Also check into the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). They offer state and national level competitions, and Jumior Olympics. Don't worry about experience at a tournament. Most try to divide competitors up by age and rank. If it is a large tournament then they may go by height and weight as well. Good Luck!!
  14. This is a tricky question. If you are well versed in your art, and faced with a self defense situation then you should be able to take care of yourself. If you are talking about MMA the Pride fights, and UFC's show us that you have to know a little bit of everything.
  15. Summer break is over, and school will be starting back in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any inexpensive marketing ideas to boost enrollment this time of year?? Thanks in advance for your input!
  16. Yes, they are both similar. See if the schools offer free lessons. Try both...the Instructor(s) and your dedication is what will make the difference...not the style. Good Luck!
  17. You can click on the link below to check out ripcords. http://www.centuryma.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=64584&langId=-1&product_parentId=13646&crumb=13501-13512&categoryId=13646&parent_category_rn=13641
  18. You are bright to catch on to this so quickly. Usually if it is a persons first experience in martial arts then they think "this is how it must be done!". You should not be taking class with 5 or 6 year olds. They cannot learn like you can, and your training is suffering. Visit other schools in your area...see if they offer a few free lessons, and then make your decision. Sure sounds like you need a new school though. Good luck!
  19. Thanks for having a great web site! I am a 2nd Degree in TKD. I also study Jui Jitsu, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and boxing. I own a school, and try to incorporate all these styles in our curriculum. I won the AAU Florida State Sparring championship and the USTL Sparring National Championship in 2003. I am looking forward to all the knowledge that is on this site. Thanks again for having this forum to share the knowledge!
  20. Hi Watch her and try to time her rechamber or recoil I think you called it. Use this time to rush her, and use your hands. Also when she throws the kick a hard low block may throw her off balance allowing you to get inside on her. Good Luck!
