Our school has verbal tests during testings as well. I know I don't want to sit down to a written test, and I agree with the last post that kids don't want to either.

If you are a school owner it is a necessary evil. It is cool if you are selling a good product at a fair price. Some people think you should be ashamed for making money teaching martial arts. If you have spent years learning something others want to learn, and they are willing to pay for your knowledge then I am all for it!

Opening a new school, would love suggestions, etc.
White_Tiger replied to ookami's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I agree with the first response...be sure you have a good curriculum in place. You don't want to look like you are unorganized. As far as the business stuff: - Make a realistic budget, and stick to it. Make sure you budget for some advertising, and things like your sign, equipments, insurance, etc. Check into these prices in your area. - Make sure you have some help, because there will be times when you can't be on the floor, because you have to deal with the business side of the school. - Be prepared to pay monthly taxes. I just opened my own school this past March...email me if you have any questions, and I will do my best to help. Good Luck! -
Yeah, without seeing you we can only make guesses. If you are in a fighting stance (one leg forward) then the front hand is going to be weaker because you don't turn your hip into the punch. It sounds like your first punch is more of a jab which won't have as much power, but can be used to set up other techniques.

It is hard to say "don't get nervous", because you will be, especially in the forms competition. Just be prepared! Go over your form until you don't have to think about it. Be VERY courteous to the judges. Point sparring is about speed and accuracy, also keep the clock in mind. If time is running out and you are behind you can't just lay back. If you have a lead, and time is running out make sure you protect it. These are just a few tips. There is no way to tell you everything on this forum...Just BE PREPARED!! Good Luck! Let me know how you do!

I live in South Georgia...it gets really hot here. I would not even run the AC in my school except I would have to hear about it from all the parents. The heat will tire you faster, and you have to really stay hydrated, but there is nothing like working out in the heat. It puts added strains on your body, and builds stamina! Try it sometime! Good Luck to all!

I have a 70lb bag hanging in my garage. I have the stands at my school. I am an advocate of the hanging bags. When they swing back at you it allows you to work on your dodging and slipping skills, and your timing for punches and kicks. You never have to worry about knocking them over either. Just take an eye screw (looks like a huge screw with a circle attached to it) and drive it into one of the 4x2's in your ceiling. Connect the chain of the heavy bag to the eye bolt with a "s" hook. Let me know if you want more info. Good luck!

The word "Style" is misleading.
White_Tiger replied to Treebranch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sansooer said "well saying you do baseball or football is different, because they are different sports but ma's are all ma's just using your body in a different way instead of a whole new set of equipment." All MA's are MA's just like all sports are all sports. You still run, you still use a ball, etc. Just like in MA's we all punch, we all kick, but it is different "styles". Some of us do it on the ground some of us do it standing up. The point I was trying to make is that the word "style" helps define what we do. If I say my style is BJJ then you know I fight on the ground, if I say my style is TKD you know I fight standing up. Just wanted to clarify what I meant. -
The word "Style" is misleading.
White_Tiger replied to Treebranch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I guess you could plug in any word you wanted instead of style. "What Method of MA", "What Form of MA", but you have to realize the arts are different. You could tell someone "I do martial arts", but you really haven't told them anything. It would be like you told someone "I play sports"...well, what do you play football, baseball, basketball?? So, by telling them what "style" you are simply defining which art you study. -
Our school has a class for 4-5 year olds. They get a watered down version of the curriculum, and their classes are only 30 minutes in length. They have fun, and are learning real techniques. The parents are not looking for them to defend themselves against an adult, but if you are teaching them discipline, they are learning something, and they are having fun everyone is happy. Hope this helps.

How old when you started?
White_Tiger replied to mouko_yamamoto's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion

fancy kicks
White_Tiger replied to NightShade_UK's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Depending on your age Nightshade you may never be able to hold a side kick that high. I have students that are gifted and have been able to hold a side kick as high as there head one month into training. You can develop the muscles in your hip by doing slow concetrated kicks. When it comes to self defense when would you ever need to hold a side kick in the air?? Good Luck! -
No problem...let me know if you need anymore suggestions.

Beating the Instructor
White_Tiger replied to Black Dragon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Dan Marino had a QB coach, but I guarantee he couldn't throw a football like Marino could. It is inevitable that a student will get the better of his Instructor in classroom sparring from time to time. Does this mean the student can't learn from the Instructor anymore?? Absolutely not! I believe you said in a NHB fight your Instructor would dominate you...sounds like you have plenty more to learn from him/her. -
If you don't like getting hit with logs try some of these: * Have someone with boxing gloves or focus mits/pads take random swings at your head (roundhouse type swings). Tell them not to get into a pattern so you don't know when the hit is coming. When you bob and weave be sure your eyes remain on your opponenent. Try to use small movements...you don't want to do big moves that waste lots of energy. * Have a partner take a blocker (or some other pad), and make straight movements at your head (like a jab). Do "slip" drills with this by moving your head left or right. Again, make sure you partner varies his attack. Shadow boxing in front of a mirror, as mentioned in an earlier post, is a great excercise too. Good Luck!

Martial Arts University
White_Tiger replied to Black Dragon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I don't know of anything like that here in the Southeast part of US. -
Doesn't sound like you have rested the injury. You are going to have to back off, and let it heal. Treat with ice, anti-inflammatories and stretching. Stretch the hamstrings first, then the quads, then the adductors. Wrap the area with a 6-inch Ace bandage. Because it has lasted so long you may want to see sports medicine doctor. You may have some sort of hip injury that you think is a groin strain. Good luck!

Sorry I need to vent!
White_Tiger replied to the-wayis-noway's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree with the previous post. Sounds like the ATA schools in my area. It is not the style...it is your school. Best of luck to you!
