  1. At school I train with a respected instructor. He is hired buy the school to teach beginning and intermediate Karate. On the side he is the instructor for our Karate club. He volunteers his time to teach us. It is an honor and a privilage especially since he is such a good instructor. Well today This one lady was bad mouthing our sensei, cause apparently they had problems. She claims he doesn't teach her anything and never answers her questions. Honestly during training I never see her raise a hand to ask a question. What I DO notice is her talking when she shouldn't be! Like talking to me while we are lined by rank to bow! And just last week Lining to my Right when she is of a lower kyu. I don't care, but it is proper dojo etiquette to line up on my left cause she is of lower rank and the senior members care. No she is not new. She has been in our dojo for 1/2 a year now, currently 7th kyu. By now any student SHOULD know the dojo etiquette. Anyhow se went off ranting how Sensei is an advisor (which is the paper term for his position with out school for the club) and not our instructor. Then she continues to mouth off that the other shodan senpai who hlep train us shold not be welcome cause they are not a part of our club. Needless to say she was not making sense. She disrespects the dojo etiquette and our sensei and expects him to still be helpful to her. Unbelievable. You must show respect to be shown the same. The other black belts are crucial to our training cause sensei can't train all of us at once. She disrespects the dojo etiquette, bad mouths our sensei and expects to be a part of our dojo. It was ridiclous, started ranting,"I do what I want, who said I have to follow your rules!, You can't make me do blah blah blah" We made it simple and clear like Sensei does, in dojo you follow our rules, you want to do all that other stuff, go outside. This lady was so infuriating. I told her if you don't like the way we do things, then leave, nobody is making you stay and nobody is making you leave. Your choice, you're the one not agreeing. Only thing she can reply with are insults from out of nowhere like "youre stupid" and "You can't make me blah blah blah" Just had to rant. I'm sure many of you agree with me it was ridiclous to say such things about sensei and how stupid it is to continue training with us if that is how she feels.
  2. You know, I'm sure they use the japanese terminology. Any reputable dojo will use the japanese terminology. When I train I don't really need much more than the terminology. I dont' see language being that big of a deal.
  3. Not really. I have my best sessions on my own. Everyone is different.
  4. I've seen a guy fail shodan 5 times. On the 5th time the sensei, knew he deserved and gave it to him.
  5. You misunderstand. The "correct" way of doing the movements are stiff in themselves. It has nothing to do with correct or incorrect execution. Obviously the stances in shotokan are moveable, but they are not as moveable as needed.
  6. Our shotokan dojo recently began some shorin ryu. It's a bit different. The stances aren't as PLANTED as shotokan and not as wide. It offers more free movement to the "stiff" style of shotokan To be honest alot of the stuff taught to me in shotokan , I throw out the window during sparring just cause some movements are too stiff to effectively spar. Doesn't mean I throw out all my shotokan training out the window, but some things they teach you in shotokan really have no use in fighting. I noticed the shorin stuff is more applicable to fighting cause it isn't as stiff. just try it.
  7. I used to bounce when this one instructor taught us kumite, but after I went with another instructor and he let us go free style on kumite, I quickly learned bouncing around was not good. waste of energy. HUGE waste of energy especially since we had free for all kumite after 2hrs of training with no break. Sometimes I will just stand still in one place scan my opponent and wait for an opening or just to see when an opening will present itself by seeing his movement.

do you do a kata called "say zon"
  9. Is there an online reference where i can see the steps to the "say zon" kata? My dojo is Shotokan and we are doing some shorinji for a visitor next month and I need some out of dojo practice to remember all the steps to this kata. I just can't get it all down during dojo time.
  10. Get to know them. Simple as that. Once they know you, this feeling of yours will go away as they will see your true motives. As for the makeup, I can care less. Maybe cause I'm on the west coast, we don't care. Just don't look like a baboon.
  11. I lift and I do shotokan. ]The increase in muscle size does reduce flexability. I lift regulary and lately have been going to the dojo twice a week. It is definately taking a toll on my body. I'm sore and I hurt almost everyday.
  12. T shirts are hot. I dunno about you guys, but the gi cools me. I just open the front a bit and vent the heat.
  13. In our shotokan dojo we free spar, no pads, nothing. Yeah it hurts, but we try not to realy HURT.
  14. Sandan isn't so bad. Pretty straight forward. It just tests your ability to switch stances with each movement PROPERLY.
  15. I used what I had. Oxyclean and some clorox bleach for colors. Most of the blood is gone. Thanls people.
  16. Personally I hate the look of light weight gi. Heavy weight looks MUCH better. It holds the shape.
  17. So warm/Hot water is a bad idea?
  18. I got blood on my white gi tonight. My blood. How do I get it off?
  19. Glucosomine and the Chondrotin have dissppated my wrist and ankle pains. Highly recommended.
  20. I almost don't even know what to say to the guy who made this thread. It almost deserves to be deleted.
  21. In our Dojo, Perish the thought of no Gi. In all honesty though, the pants get in the way. My knees get caught when do some kicks. MT has the right idea with shorts.
  22. I return to this site after a few months and this is the first post I see. Karate like everything else is what you make of it.
  23. Kamikaze does the job nicely.
  24. Hirokazu Kanazawa The head of the SKIF. (My organization)
