Art vs art?!?!?
Fenris-wolf replied to Martial_Artist's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Ahh, these threads are so funny, because everyone's opinions are so similar, and yet utterly un-interchangeable. Maybe a different way of putting it is that different MA mean different things to different people. These debates are never going to be concluded, because what you believe comes purely from your perspective. I personally believe that it is always going to be a mix. If a 60kg woman fights a 90kg man she is going to have to have good technique as well as a style that is good for dealing swiftly with mis-matched opponents. If two people of equal size and equal natural ability with equal amounts of training fight it will come down a lot more to style. It seems pretty obvious. But that's just my opinion. -
New to Muay Thai

Alright, I can see where you're coming from, because I have witnessed some arrogance from Muay Thai fighters on this site (I hope I wasn't one of them ). But in the "real world" I have yet to meet anyone who is! Sure, we love our art and naturally we all feel very good about how we perform in the ring, but we never abuse other arts in order to boost our self-esteem. I personally have a lot of respect for practictioners (sp??) of other styles. (By the way when I say "we" I am mostly referring to the people at my dojo.) What I do not appreciate is that in order to make your point about "arrogant" Muay Thai fighters you feel the need to be arrogant yourself. We have many weapons, yes punches and kicks but also knees and elbows. If you bet a Muay Thai fighter that proves you are the better fighter, not that your style is superior. (I do not like using the words "superior" or "inferior" as they are a little strong, but I'm sure you understand my meaning.) So in conclusion I would appreciate it if you would consider your wording a little more carefully before making broad generalisations!

Thank you so much for sharing that, SaiFightsMS; I cannot believe I would ever have your courage.

Yup, I suck. There are some good sites via google, but I think my problem is that I need a human being helping me. Thanks anyway.

Yay you, I love fantasy/sci-fi! What kind of fantasy (heroic fantasy is usually my forte) do you write? I was introduced to fantasy at eleven and it's pretty much all I read with periodic forays into sci-fi/ mystery/ comedy/ whatever takes my fancy. Are any of your books published? It kinda sucks that I'd never find any of them since I live in this little backwater... A martial arts book would be interesting, do you feel you have the expertese (sp?? ) to write something like that? Or would it be fictional?

I haven't done Chemistry for a little while but even I was a little disturbed when I saw the title! Oh well, whatever floats your boat.

Hey, Martial_Artist... What do you write?

Haha, I tried once and I was so bad the machine started abusing me

What do you think is the best "self defense" weapo
Fenris-wolf replied to Withers M.A.A.'s topic in Martial Arts Weapons
In relation to your conversation/argument , which I can't resist commenting on now I've read the whole thing... I agree with both of you, dammit. I'm kinda anti-guns, but I think it comes more down to the mentality of the population than the laws. Martial_artist, you're so right -make a law and all you do is make criminals of "normal" people. Or force them to be persecuted by those who disregard it. On the other hand, the sheer amount of people (and no I can't back this up ) who will shoot a family member if, for example they keep a handgun in a drawer by the bed and they are woken from a bad dream, is kinda scary. So I think that America needs to encourage a more... I don't know, level emotional state from it's populous. I think the main problem is the whole "freedom of the press", which leads the tabloids etc to fear-monger in order to sell magazines/papers. As an example on a lesser scale, there was a lot of hysteria created over "dangerous dogs" in NZ earlier this year, so that people with dogs were being abused by people when they go to the beach because there was so much propaganda being spread around. That really pissed me off. -

Not exactly... I live in Wellington, which by NZ standards isn't exactly close, but geographically speaking it's not very far at all. Auckland's near the top of the North Island, Wellington's at the very bottom of the North Island. Yes, NZ's great. The rest of NZ tend's to be a bit anti-auckland (in a joking way), since that's where most of the rich and famous live and it's pretty much full of smog and big buildings. Of course, in comparison to New York, which has 3x our population, it's a village! How long's your friend lived here? -

Wow, so many guns. We don't really have many guns (excl. rifles for hunting) in NZ, although apparently it's pretty easy to get a permit. Personally, I like the theory of "everything is a weapon". It's always fun to think of ways to make really random things into weapons. But that's not really addressing the question. I don't know what I'd pick as the most effective, since I don't carry anything. I'm so vague about our laws that it's not really worth bothering. I think we're pretty strict. But really I can't help but feel that bringing guns into the situation just moves the whole thing up a notch. Just IMO... -
Am I the only one who thinks the whole "make the vampires bubble up and explode" thing in the first one was beyond lame?? Honestly, it actually ruined the movie for me. I love vampires, I love fight scenes, I thought it was win-win. But nooo.

To be completely honest I don't have the energy to discuss the whole idea of a "ferocious" dog, and everyone here seems to have a pretty good grasp on things, so I'll just comment on what really got my blood boiling... First of all, yes, I completely agree, I love all these breeds. Maybe you have to be careful when picking a breeder etc, but that should be true of all dogs. It's so sad when people discriminate by their pre-conceptions about a breed, because is makes the entire problem self-perpetuating. If the only people who want a doberman want a "lean, mean, fighting machine", then this poor breed is doomed to be bought primarily by abusive owners. Which naturally will create aggressive tendancies! More importantly though... How can somebody consider themselves worthy of keeping an animal if they would even consider beating them?! If I knew somebody who had done this to their dog I would be hard pressed not to give them at least a good slapping. It's disgusting and there is no justification! There should be tests of character, not just the person's property, before you're allowed to take on the responsibility of another creature's life! OK, and I'm spent. P.S. I don't live with a dog at the moment since I'm flatting, but I have a beautiful little lab-cross at Dad's place who I love to bits.

This is a fairly difficult question. The term "training" in and of itself can be misleading. Now, if they have better training, they are probably going to win. This doesn't mean; "if they've got a black belt" or "if they've won a full [muay thai/boxing etc] fight", but actually if they've trained harder than you it is unlikely you can win without copious amounts of luck. A step in the right direction is to be an intelligent fighter. Because if your skill level is very similar to theirs, the fighter who thinks is likely to win. Maybe they are much more skilled than you, but if you watch to see their weaknesses you can play on those. For example if you notice that they are a good kicker, make sure you keep in too close for them to kick you. If they're a good grappler, keep out of grappling range and try for quick, effective combos. The advantage in a street fight situation is that there are no "points", so all you really need to do is get in a few good hard shots then run. I know it doesn't sound like fun, but if you want to fight for entertainment, start up cage fighting. But if you're looking for an art... I practice Muay Thai, which is Thai kickboxing. This is a very effective stand-up style, but it unfortunately has no ground fighting. You can progress pretty quickly, it's all down to the amount of effort you're willing to put in. Pankration sounds good if you can find a club, apparently quite similar to Muay Thai (insofar as a Greek MA can be similar to a Thai MA!), but they do have ground fighting. Other than that, there are some good boards in the "Comparitive Styles" forum if you really want to find out what's best in you situation. Hope that helped, if you could be bothered reading it!

Why do Traditional Martial Arts suck?
Fenris-wolf replied to aznkarateboi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Thank you for your elaboration on the kata, Kirves. While I have enjoyed learning kata, if I am ever asked "Why?" I end up stumbling through a badly worded explanation and eventually just telling them I don't know enough to help them. -

Hmm, sorry to butt in and be a pain, but I just have to whinge -they won't let women in at all!! Grr. I mean, I know I couldn't handle it, and I wouldn't even try (although I did want to be a sniper and I wasn't allowed to do that either ), but it's the principle of the matter. I also am aware it is a tough call for the government, since no matter how PC we may be people are still disturbed by women in combat. Look at all the crap that went down when there were female prisoners of war in Iraq! Nonetheless, it's kind of irritating to be told that we can't because it's uncomfortable for the politicians! Yes, we may be raped. It will maybe, even probably happen if we get captured. But we're big girls now and we are aware of the risks. I mean, up until recently it wasn't the smartest decision to join the Navy at all if you didn't want to be abused. Please, nobody start spouting the stuff about how women are weaker etc, I know it's true, but it only goes so far. Thank you for putting up with my rant -
Oh, crap, I'm a TAN dragon!! Honestly... What decent dragon is tan?? Blah. I should have made more of an effort to be evil, at least then I could be pretty. Anyways, I just changed my avatar and it's my club's logo. Original, I know.

I am 18 Sounds nice, I know, and I should take advantage of it, but... I don't feel like I am as young as I appear and it's strange when people make assumptions based on my age. Not to say that I can't act like a 12 year old when I want to.

Anyone here know what a minor miracle 2 flap is?? Or even better, if someone could point me to a site that contains these kind of explanations I would be eternally grateful.

Ummm... Just out of interest, who here is NOT American??
