I've seen isshin ryu done in K-1 and sabaki but not many fighting for points more like KO's. Look up Maddy's karate.
-
I have seen a lot of point style shotokan guys. It's not my thing but we all have a place in the world. I like Wado because it adds jiu jitsu's softer movements with shotokans hard movements. Both are good but Wado has a little more blending of the arts.
-
I like both but Wado is a little more well rounded.

Has anyone ever heard of him or know what style he does?

The gentleman I’m referring to weights 300lbs. healthy, and has studied kung fu for 25 years. The wooden arms…I have don’t know what they are made of, but he makes his own and sells them. His dummy was planted in the ground in his backyard under a carport. Watching a big guy work the dummy looks silly because of the soft movements and I question the validity of using (and perhaps I was a little sarcastic) the dummy and he demonstrated the power that you gain after years of training. As for ripping the bark off trees…I don’t why he would do it but I wouldn’t want to be on the end of palm if we were sparring. His style includes 5 animal forms, shaolin something or other and wing chun. I couldn’t have it wrong I new to the kung fu world. Thanks for your patience.

-
hobz, Is the CMAC Goju, shotokan mixed?
-
Is it a style?

I was told by a Japanese Shotokan karateka with a very solid history that a shodan could grade another to shodan. I had never heard of this before... I do a pre-grading, then have another sensei come in for the real thing.
-
In your club can a shodan grade another to shodan? Can a nidan grade to shodan?
-
I'm looking into Wing Chun, can anyone fill me in on what to expect? Here's the web site of the sifu that I will be signing with. https://www.wingchunkwoon.com Thx
-
I truly feel that 5th dan is the highest. The rest mean little and have more to do with with age and time spent teaching.
-
What does nidan mean to you? Is it something to aim for, or is training itself more important?
-
Funakoshi himself was only a 5th dan. Black belt is not the marker everyone thinks it to be.

In club sparring usally but not in comps...

We punch full contact to the head, use sweeps and throws as well as work for a top position. (ex. knee on chest) We don't ground grapple in shotokan but we do use what ever we can standing. Arm bars and chokes, etc. I don't think this is the norm in most shotokan dojo but this is what we do.

If your small and light duck under/arm drag with a ankle pick works well. Shoot in for a double and turn into to guy your rolling with, it's not a slam but in will put him on his back. Also try uchi mata. http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm
