  1. This! When I was a young teen, I used to purchase mats from Home Depot to use for break-dancing!
  2. Thank you, Sensei8. We'll see how long this veture lasts lol.
  3. Yearly commitments are a huge turnoff for me; I reject them outright and move on in my search. And purely having dedicated adult classes with more than 2 days per week
  4. Thanks for Sharing Sense8 I currently follow similar eating patterns. I was losing 6 pounds while using intermittent fasting and cooking my own meals when everything changed one night when I went out to dinner with relatives. We ate really well, and I just told myself that I could have one or two more junk meals and then get back on track, but that never happened. I've discovered that when I train while having bad eating habits, I get really winded and feel overweight.
  5. alex volk gave islam a run for his money!
  6. Wow heart warming to see a response after almost 16 yrs! welcome back!
  7. How far did you take the private lessons? Was it only the fundamentals? Were the students who desired private lessons regulars in group classes, or were they more of the "teach me a little bit something of Karate" variety? just curious
  8. I appreciate the advice and recognize the importance of being cautious about what I advise due to liability concerns.
  9. Isn't Seishin owned by Jesse of Karate Nerd? I just can't justify paying the price when there are cheaper brands with comparable, if not better, quality.
  10. I know this is an old post, but I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining this film was! I'll admit, I expected it to be extremely corny after seeing the billboard advertisements while it was still in theaters.
  11. What do you eat right now, being a martial artist? (Be sincere.) Do you eat mostly junk food or mostly nutritious stuff?
  12. that is true in a good way, but I just feel strange as an adult hanging out with children; it reminds me of a scene from a Billy Madison movie.
  13. There's a lot of wisdom in this, and it makes sense to me. I was interested in the bunkai variation they showed of Pinan Nidan, in response to a right cross, the left arm would inside-outside block/grab, then drive in with the same hand with a kizami zuki, followed by an oi zuki with the opposite side.
  14. I've started training in Kyokushin, and I must say, I'm really enjoying it. I worked up a good sweat and everything was perfect—the teacher, the students, and the material. The kata is insteresting since it incorporates several Goju Ryu techniques. One thing I had to get used to was performing kihon in sanchin stance. Im also studying a Shorin ryu program I recently bought. All of these ought to keep me occupied with karate for a while.
  15. That's an intriguing concept; how long would one have to train before becoming a candidate for black belt? What are the distinctions between youth and adult curriculum?
  16. I no longer train with my core style, in which I have a dan rank, because I made the decision to start in other systems and would prefer to learn and excel in something new, which is what I am currently doing. With Shotokan, Although I am confident in my basic abilities, I lack the motivation and time to commit again and stay consistent in order to achieve a higher Dan grade and eventually have the ability to promote. I've considered teaching complete beginners the fundamentals and charging a small fee if given the opportunity.
  17. I don't mean to start a flame war, but to which groups do you refer when you say they have bastardized the style?
  18. Thanks for the encouragement; I've done a lot of research on Kyokushin in the past but never got around to trying it out in person. I'm drawn to Kyokushin because I know I'll get a good workout, as opposed to Shorin Ryu in person. But the good news is that, thanks to @ Zaine, I discovered a Shorin ryu home study program. So I'm glad I can have the best of both worlds while only having to pay one monthly fee (if I stick with Kyokushin) and the other as a video that I can study whenever I want with the instructor guiding me every step of the way.
  19. What are your thoughts on the bunkai shown in the video for katas? Does it compare to traditional Shorin Ryu? They appear to be very interesting, but they primarily focus on situations in which someone is grabbing your wrist, neck, or other body part and countering with tuite techniques/throws.
  20. The video, on the other hand, is fantastic, and I purchased it directly from the website. I'm ecstatic that, to my surprise, they offer a similar long distance training program as Gracie University. I mentioned in the grappling subforum that I discovered Gracie Combatives and that it offers live testing for rank; this program, to my surprise, does the same.
  21. I throw the roundhouse by chambering the leg and striking with the ball or shin; I avoid the top of the foot because I previously fractured my hairline when someone checked my kick with their knee.
  22. welcome back!
  23. This is where I am as independent practitioner, not as a student of a particular organization. I find myself experimenting with my own interpretations of kata that I know make sense in my eyes. I'm constantly reminding myself to always polish up my BASICS to perfection so that I can teach to the best of my ability to anyone new and eager to learn.
