  1. Thanks Sensei8 I figure I'm not getting any younger, so I might as well check something off my Karate bucket list.
  2. I haven't done much since my initial posts on the forum about finding a good Karate school with dedicated adult classes and such. I initially found a Shotokan school that piqued my interest, but for various reasons, I decided to branch out and try other Karate styles. I am very interested in looking into a Kyokushin school and starting as a complete newbie and seeing where it takes me, and at the same time, I want to study Shorin Ryu but will most likely have to rely on a "at my own pace" type of study, essentially videos/books/dvds. I'll update as the journey goes; I'm very excited to test the waters.
  3. What a coincidence, I was looking for Shorin videos as well, and I was interested in training but there were no dojos in my area. Thanks for that link, will def check that out
  4. I was surprised at how quickly he dispatched Olivera; I thought Olivera's grappling was unrivaled and that no one could beat him until the Daghestanis proved me wrong.
  5. My favorite sequence is always getting to spider guard from the bottom while controlling each sleeve and pulling them down and clamping my legs to set up a triangle, then transitioning to armbar or kimura from guard if the first two fail.
  6. Are the pupils you're instructing total beginners? Do they care about advancing in rank? I ask since I am simply a Shodan and cannot advance someone over brown belt. I figure I'd target potential clients who are interested in learning the fundamentals, etc.
  7. I'm going with Makhachev because he has Khabib and the entire AKA behind him. Volk was nearly submitted by Ortega in their fight, and Volk stated that he was on the verge of losing the belt; I can only imagine how it will end up with Makhachev. My personal opinion
  8. Yudansha should always train as if they were white belts.
  9. Without a doubt, it should be acknowledged as a legitimate art that can be used in MMA; champions in kickboxing and MMA who are trained in karate already exist. Due to the Mcdojo issue, as well as the fact that some styles of karate don't allow for full contact, it's likely that most individuals aren't as interested in learning it as their primary art if interested starting kick boxing or mma.
  10. I only have experience with a generic amazon brand and Fuji, it made my kicks feel restricted to some extent.
  11. thanks for the response Wastelander, How has your response been from students in regards to your current rank or experience? are you retaining dedicated students since teaching independently?
  12. I agree that mugens tend to be on the baggy side, but I believe that most modern karate outfits are "loosely"fitted, even the long obis. Uniforms and obis used to be lot more snug fitted than they are today, including the much shorter obis (which is what I prefer). When it comes to fit, BJJ gis are what I would prefer; but, when I once wore my BJJ trousers to karate class, I noticed there was more limitation on movement.
  13. Coming from the standpoint of a martial arts consumer, I previously made a similar observation regarding how most Karate schools I encounter cater more to children without offering any classes specifically designed to instruct adults. I'll encounter hybrid classes where adults and children of school age are together, which is off-putting to me. However, I am aware that the main source of income is children.
  14. how much do you usually charge for private lessons?
  15. whats best methods or remedies have you run across to naturally un clog your arteries?
  16. I appreciate the responses, and I believe this should be commonly used in Japanese Karate styles. It would greatly increase the training's interest.
  17. renzoku kumite (continous sparring) Any detailed advice on how I may incorporate this into my usual workout (coming from a Shotokan background) would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, few of the clubs I've trained with use this approach.
  18. Thanks for the information, I was listening to the Bloodsport soundtrack on YouTube while working out and it piqued my interest because I remembered Karate was his martial art, though in the film Bloodsport, he was trained in ninjitsu, I believe.
  19. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I read that John Hackleman, Liddell's trainer, had kata removed from his curriculum that he taught at the Pit. Apart from donning gis and belts, it is difficult to tell it apart from some sort of kickboxing at this point.
  20. Strongly concur with this! But thankfully, people like Chuck Liddell and Stephen Thompson have demonstrated its value in competitive mixed martial arts at the highest levels. (former champ Glover Texiera is also a high ranking Kempo guy under Hackleman)
  21. Anybody familiar with JCVD's (Jean Claude Van Damme) Shotokan ancestry? Who taught him Shotokan, and what lineage?
  22. welcome Rolystrong!
  23. Check out this link for more information. http://www.gracieuniversity.com/Pages/Public/Course?enc=vsGdmSaTikLU4BRiE% 2fqMwA% 3d% 3d I watched the content and samples of people's tests on YouTube, and regardless of what anyone thinks about video testing, I think it's wonderful for learning the fundamentals of JJ that can be used for self defense in the real world.
