In muay thai we have a few things similar. 1. as you leg block the roundhouse, push the shoulder - it takes power out of the kick 2. If you are closer too him and don't have time to catch the kick, nail him with a right cross to the body. it has the same effect as #1. everyone should know multiple wyas of defending the roundhouse.

I've got several more points, but this has already been done to death. Check out Royce's self defense book, and that will cover some of the SD stuff we cover in bjj. If you notice, the majority of it is standing. -

*sigh* 1. we've had this debate before, so I'll make it short: -bjj does adress standup grappling -bjj has plenty of street applicable ground defense -you are not impossible to takedown, so you better know ho to get back up efficiently - those submissions are breaks, and yes they happen in competition frequently when people don't tap -an mma guy probably stands a better chance than a budo taijutsu guy in an altercation due to the nature of his training. -
MMA
SevenStar replied to Sho-ju's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
It's extremely rare - there were a few in the early days, but MMA now mostly consists of wrestling, boxing, bjj and thai boxing. -
I wouldn't make a habit of that...

What my buddy vash is saying (and yes, he understands the meaning behind it) is that cultural practices in general are not necessary. And to an extent, I agree with him. Several people struggle with technique names, for example. Why say "o soto makikomi" or "sasae tsuri komi ashi" when I can more easily say "major ourter winding" or "lifting, propping, pulling ankle"? the latter is easier to understand, and takes away an aspect of of focus - the time that I spend learning those names is time I can spend training. ditjita - a bow is a sign of respect, but so is a handshake. While we are shaking, I never take my eyes off of you, and since we have established contact, if you make any sudden movement to hit me, I will feel your movement and can respond accordingly.

that won't make you stronger though, after a certain point. Bodyweight exercises are mainly for building muscle endurance, not strength. resistance exercises build strength. Take me for example. I bench press 280. However, I can't do 100 straight pushups. Find a person who can do 100 straight pushups but doesn't lift wieghts, and I guarantee you he can't bench 280. bodyweight exercises don't offer progressive resistance, and therefore will not continue to make you stronger. you only gain more endurance.

No. ANother way (the best way, probably) Is neurological training - force is nothing more than a hard muscular contraction. You must train your neuromuscular system to contract harder. There are several methods of doing this - the one I've tried and had success with is "power to the people" - it's a program designed by pavel tsatsouline.

Because muscle takes more calories to sustain than fat. I don't think evolution could change that...

true.

you won't get the mass from a dummy that you can get from a barbell as barbells can surpass a dummy in poundage. As far as ROM, there's not a varied ROM in the curl... I don't think it will make much difference between barbell and dumbell if you are doing the curl correctly.

stunting your growth isn't a prob, as you're 18. I do one arm curls with 55 also. It doesn't hurt me. you are probably using more weight than you can properly handle right now. decrease it.

Both if possible, but If I had to pick, then jump rope.

I tell you what - next time you visit the states, or I visit CA, we're gonna spar - I promise you'll have repsect for the roundhouse kick when it's done. As far as it being great for point sparring, tell that to all of us thai boxers, nmma fighters, etc. who use it effectively on a regular basis.

Jiu Jitsu in actual combat
SevenStar replied to Rich67's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
not because of the potential to attack from inside the guard. If the guy inside the guard is doing what he should be, then he is postured up. In that instance, yes, it is neutral, as neither guy can submit the other. -

unless you're fighting a beginner, you're not gonna get a leglock while you are in someone's guard - same goes for a neck crank. The things you mentioned are possible, but how probable? -
Can you describe what you mean by "countre-leg grabbing"? A full force, properly thrown roundhouse to your midsection from anyone can be traped. Step back away from the kick with your trailing leg and you can take the kick on either a universal block that rolls to a trap, or simply let it come into the gut and make a 'basket' with your arms. Or you can circle the rear arm up to bind the leg between your forearm and bicep. What makes this work is the mechanical properties of the kick. It has max power at about 80% of its arc. After that, it starts loosing power rapidly. Step away and you deminish the effects of the kick greatly. In fact, step far enough and you don't even need to block as it won't even make contact. 'Course, it's hard to trap then too. Now, I'm sure someone out there is about to tell me this won't work. I've stood with my arms behind my back and let TKDers (known kickers) unload full force on me. It worked for me, and now it also works for them. Exactly what I said... If I had read this first, I wouldn't have wasted my time typing!
