Um, you say that karate is meant for fighting at distance? This is not entirely true. There are many many techniques to deal with close in attackers. 1 of them is the close punch. I know many variations. There are also takedowns and some pretty brutal joint locks to be learned if you get a good teacher. Oh by the way i was forced to fight someone yesterday. I beat his butt with my karate training.

Self Defense or Looks?
mikS replied to BlackDragon777's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I agree, but i was just talking about the training system, you can´t apply form movements in a real fight, almost even a kick to the head, but if you can kick very hard to the head(in forms or training)...you´ll have good attributes to kick to the chest in a real fight. Um, unless the kick is WIDE OPEN, kicking to the chest probably isn't a good idea either. IT is usually best to kick to the thighs, as it is very painful and makes you unable to walk -
If you are going to spar full contact, and you have knuckle guards on, why not go to the face? We rarely spar full contact, but we DO do it, and we are allowed to punch to the face. Maybe because it is realistic and everyoen shoudl know how it feels to get hti in the face?

I practice karate-DO, and we spar full contact, no point sparring, and we do some kata, but not that much. I think it really depends on the school/instructor, as most of our techniques we learn are pretty devastating and tend to hurt people really badly when applied.

Ok everyone this is what everyone needs to understand about stances. Stances are for transition only. Yep, you heard me, TRANSITION ONLY. That means you do not stay in them, but you use them to move. This should clear things up. And no, you would definitely NOT go into a stance during a streetfight.

who uses a palm strike in a streetfight??? expalin why.

Shirkan how did you go about training yourself in order to have such a strong grip? -
If I had only one thing to tell you during sparring it would be to relax and keep calm.
-
I study it as well.

No, definitely realistic at all. It will take a year, 2 years?? who knows, but definitely longer than 6 months
-
Personally, it took me a month or two to master the art of belt-tying. It takes a little fiddling and pulling in different directions to make the knot nice and flat, and the belt ends nice and even. A month? LOL i learned it in a day!

My friend, i must strongly DISAGREE that it is a good idea to tell your opponent in a street fight that you do martial arts. It is better to not tell him, then kick his ass.lol

mikS replied to Musipilot's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Very nice video i must admit, but it also shows why TKD is looked down upon. -
Does anyone here know how can condition my body (mostly lower abs and up) to take hard strikes and punches? I want to know this because i can throw a very hard punch, but i'm not sure how hard of a punch i coudl take. Any replies are appreciated.

You've hit the nail on the head. Well said. Half fist to the throat will do a lot of damage.

What style of kung fu? But honestly, go to the school with the highest quality of instruction.

Do chicks dig guys who know karate?
mikS replied to BKJ1216's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
From what i've experienced, not that many girls think it is very impressive that i do karate. Although they were slightly impressed when i successfully defended myself against some 250 lb senior tryin to take my money -
