Small Circle or BJJ or TJJ
mikS replied to Sammyrai's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Nevermind, this thread is over. EDIT: Oh yeah, btw many, if not MOST BJJ schools teach judo throws and wrestling takedowns. -
Scissor Squeeze

Your brother must be a big baby then, because that shouldn't hurt at all. People don't attempt it because it doesn't do anything. People don't tap to it because it doesn't hurt. -
More bjj vs judo controversy.
mikS replied to goshinman's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Even throws that are never damaging on the mat such as o soto gari or uchi mata can be BRUTAL against an untrained streetfighter falling onto contrete. -

Small Circle or BJJ or TJJ

Bjj has much better groundwork than Judo, but Judo has much better throws and such. Bjj is also good for street application. Easy to get out of trouble if you find yourself on the bottom, and if you end up on top, you're never going to get bucked off. -
Know what happens if you fight a kickboxer? He's going to throw roundhouse kicks at your thy. When he sees that you reach down to grab them instead of lifting your knee and blocking with the shin, he's going to either 1) kick you in the head when you expect the leg kick and drop your hands 2) fake the low kick and jack you in the face so no, the low block IS terrible against people who know what they're doing. don't you dare call me biased, i'm a brownbelt in karate who's seen the light (in the form of muay thai and brazilian ju jitsu)

If you go to a good school that spars often and hard, and become skilled, then HELL YES. Streetfighters can't fight worth crap. I've never lost a streetfight, and i've beat the doo doo out of opponents using karate (striking), wrestling (takedowns), and brazilian ju jitsu for groundwork. yes karate will work for the street if you become skilled and do two things. Crosstrain and realize the weakness in the art.

hehe, i just got my 2nd kyu yesterday. Tomorrow will mark 2 years since I entered the dojo (training 6 days a week, 3 hours a day mind you). Today at a tournament in auburn (washington), I decimated the adult advanced heavyweight sparring division. I'm 17 and was the youngest one in the division by about 6 years. Is my achievement of brownbelt in 2 years unusual? I'm just asking because i'm no really sure. BTW the above is to tell you about me, not to brag!

Believe it or not, the single most valuable tool in training any martial art is actually TRYING THEM OUT on a resisting opponent. i.e. sparring. If a student HADN'T free sparred within six months, I would personally recommend that they leave the school...

First off, your sensei is right, with more experience, instead of moving as they come in at you, you'll hit them instead. Try a lead leg front kick, it's brutal (knocked a kid down with it today). Just be determined not to move back. If anything move forward.

nooooo bjj is much better for grappling than JJJ. Sorry but it's true

TMA vs. Grapplers
mikS replied to shotokanwarrior's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
BJJ owns TMA. This is coming from a karate ka / bjj practicioner so don't even call me biased. -
Umm quick question....about my friend...
mikS replied to Kumite988's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Lol i'm not a beginner and i've kicked a guy in the nuts once. It was a thrust kick too! ouch! -
Why would you want to PUNCH TREES. I have a friend that used to do this. He's 17 years old as am I, and he has lost a noticeable amount of fine motor function in his hands. Do you want that?

Gym workouts to contribute towards your karate training
mikS replied to ESA-Shotokan's topic in Health and Fitness
Actually squats and deadlifts would strengthen all of your kicks much more, as your quadriceps are really what drive a roundhouse kick. lol -
Instead of that very expensive machine. Just buy one olympic sized barbell, 400 pounds of weight, a bench with a rack, and some dumbells. That woudl be all the equipment you ever neeed for GREAT workout. Oh yes, ankle weights and wrist weights don't work the muscles you use for MA. Wrist weights for example: you punch with your triceps and deltoids (these are the muscles you use, besides your legs). Punching with wrist weights doesn't work either of those. If you want to punch faster, train with 160z boxing gloves.

Ripper: Did you hit him weakly because you intended to or because that is how you're used to hitting people? There's a big difference and it's IMPORTANT. If you naturally pull your strikes, you need to change your training. What would happen if you had to defend yourself and pulled your punch? You'd get the beatdown of a lifetime. If you're naturally pulling punches, get a heavy bag and unload.
-
That right there is why you should do more hard contact. You would never throw a reverse hook kick in full contact. WHy? Because you would get punched or have your leg caught. You would learn that it isn't a good technique to use. As long as your sparring isn't point sparring or NO contact then it is probably ok. As long as you dont' develop bad habits from it.

Ignorance amazes me...

A TKD FIGHTER beating MIKE TYSYON? Please let's get real. That will never happen, because the tkd guy woudl try and kick, then get mauled. That IS disrespectful to mike tyson.
