  1. just based on the sound of it ithink i have the same opinion about it that i do about american style karate. he should never have happened, it sucks all the energy and culure of the art. The idea behind styles are there threre because diffrent styles use diffrent methods, theres no way to proberly combine 'all stlyes' will, perhaps there is, but i certainly would want no part of it.

    McDojo

i agree with hobbitbob. i also feel that rank and club memebrships are very irrelevant. there are only two places to prove your worth, in the ring and on the street, if you are attacked, dont mence my words,my sensai always tells us to prove ourselves in the dojo, never on the street. this dosent mean he dosent want us to defend ourselves, he just dosent want us fighting for social status. rank should be earned through hard grutetous work. i have a lot of faith in my schools system (not that its the only right one) when your ready, your ready, if that takes you a month, more power to you, if it takes you a year, better that you be ready and it take a while than you be un-prepared and over confident.
  3. I practice isshinryu, its an okinawain hybrid. we use natural stances, block with a slightly diffrent part of the arm than most styles, but the most distictive and talked about diffrence is in our punch. we dont use the corkscrew punch at all, all of our punches are at verticle angles and should require little to no twisting of the wrist. we have some katas that are singular to our style and we practice the bo, sai, and tonfa.
  4. i hate to sound biased reguarding that last post. i mean those are great styles, but why not isshinryu? we have great histories of success in both competeion and self deffense.
  5. i dont know a lot about TKD, but arnt poomse kinda like the same idea as kata in theory?
  6. no matter how i was attacked, i would use what ive learned but i would also be merciless, understanding that its a potentialy life threatning situation. This means targeting the groin, eyes, low kicks to the knee cap, punching the opponet while he is down, whatever i have to do to make sure i can get away with out being followed. it seems to me that i have drwan a big line in my training, spliting it between self deffense and my true passion, competetion. in competion my secret weapon is that my right leg is like a shot gun, in self deffense, it seems my knee jabs are my best friends.
  7. *in my stalone voice, which BTW, i do very, very well* Hey, you know you wanna do somethin'? okay, how about a little memorobilia ya know? maybe some boxing gloves or somethin' case we get real excited watchin we decide to start punchin' on eachother a little bit. you know what im sayin'? I dont know..."
  8. okay that makes since. but i have apair of the urban BDU's myself. yet the seal team that did a demo for my class in norfolk had on black urbans. i dont know, maybe it was just that once for the demo or something. Im still convinced though that while it may just look good theres gotta be something to wearing black for stealth. im thinking mostly night ops though. so then now im really confused. there was a class of nija in a very early japan was there not? which did they wear? this interrpataions are starting to contridict a little bit. is there any were i can go for direct information? Any body have a web link maybe? (man, that kinda sucks about the black though, that it all came from movies. it sounds childish i know but those things still look pretty neat. i guess for the same reason the special weapons and tacticts units look sharp in there gear)
  9. okay, i dont know a whole lot about the nija, though its a subject ive been meaning to research more prodomanetly (yea, i know its spelled wrong) If black isnt so good for concealment, why do our swat teams and seals use it? and is there any where that you can get this properly colored uniform? if in fact the ninja didnt wear black, were did that idea come from?
  10. no! of course not! its not that intamate...yet...
  11. karate is an excellent style and has all your looking for. as far as quiting tae-kwon-do? if i was you, i would. but thats just me. shack your groove thing!

*does a formal bow* well *smirk* im sorry if i came off as an obnoxious teen. just note that im not one. hey i think wed like each other a lot better if we knew eachother in person so what do you say we start over huh?
  13. okay, ready to hear about what a freak i am! i thought so! you know how one of the characteristics of the study of chi is that all things in this world have there own personaility, own life force? will i do that with my karate gear. i named my gi Searphim after the angel because its white, the color of purity, and to me karates purpose is to purify my mind body and spirit. i actually talk to the gi in the locker room before class...wierd huh? i also have all my sparing gear, gloves, mouthpice and footgear, in silver for a very sappy, and now pathetic reason that id rather not embarass myself by discussing (has to do with a girl i once dated) anyways, anybody else have this kind of attachment to there gear? if not, what do you think of my relationship with it? ~Fireka~
  14. i agree. hey mokeygirl, me and jake are coming to your hopuse to watch rocky! ill suply the dvd's, you supply the popcorn, and jake will supply himself.
  15. not at all akidoist, we know were your coming from, or at least i do. but its like this. You know we cant go telling everyone about are belt color (or at least we are not supposed to) non-karateka's just wouldnt get it, plus he ruins the art of suprise. if ppl know we are martial artist they may very likely prepare themselves for whats coming if they threaten you. not to mention, for somereason, when ppl know your a pro-fighter weather thats martial art or boxing or whatever, everybody suddenly decides they want to fight you. So we have to get our kicks in here, were everyone knows and understands.

hobbitbob, i have to be honest here, i respect you as a martial artist but im finding this to be flat out wrong. For one thing, what 'chip' do you think i have? I am not a violent person, you mis read my post. i have been in two fights my whole life, both in elementry school. i have grown up a lot since then, and even in those two, i felt i had no other choice. I love to love people, i do all i can to help people every day, thats why i want to be a police officer, to help people. I am currently enrolled in a class at my countys technical center in law enforcement. among the many qualifications i have already recieved are defensive tacticts, local law, weapons managment, handcuffing, and POLICE ETHICS. all of these are in fact qualifications and i am aplying this summer with Burns and Pinkerton private security company (they hire gate guards with my qualifications at 17) I am also planning on serving my country as a telecommunications expert and a boarding officer in the United States Coast Guard. I do in fact love to compete and fight. one of the many MANY reasons i left boxing to pursue the martial arts was because it intrest me that i can get the same rush of combat in tournamnets and still be victorious WITHOUT even touching my opponet. (in IWKA rules, you do not have to make contact to score) i belive there is nothing more beautiful than a fair well judged battle between two trained individuals who respect eachother as fighters. This sportsmanship attracts me to the ring. No more age before beauty on my part, hobbitbob, if i may be quite candid. before you go judgeing me id ask that you get to know me a little better. im not the smart*** wise cracking teenager youve created me to be in your mind. i am simply a guy with a love for a sport, an art, and a way of life. i dont doubt ive got my problems. but considering what ive seen (a lot more than most 16 year olds have) im very proud of myself for maintaining my sanity throughout the naturaly hard years that come with adolesance (as i hope to maintain throughout this course) my devotion to my choosen carear paths and my arts. I have litteraly gone from dust to a diamond in the rough. my main goal, above all outs, is to use karate to polish that diamond. ~Fireka~
  17. i think alot of ppl will have that opinion and im not sure your wrong. five was good in some ways, but i say that because im a die hard fan, if every critic gives rocky 6 two thumbs down i still see it and buy it just for the novelty. Four was desent i thought if they had fixed a couple of things it would have been good: 1. get rid of the freakin robot! i know its they 80's but for the love of god! this is rocky not robomaid! 2. make the technology thing with the russian a little more realistic. good idea, but to much fiction. 3. anyone notice this movie was just like 8 music videos streamed togather? notice how rocky 1 only had one song in the whole movie (gonna fly now)? which one was better? i rest my case.
  18. ha! im sorry. maybe our dads should get togather some time and talk about how everyone else sucks? You can imagine how he felt right around the time france came out with this whole 'america is evil for fighting in the war' deal, and i started dating the forign exchange student from Monte Carlo (god i miss her, and a note to all guys GO OUT WITH FRENCH GIRLS! ITS REALLY GOOD! I mean nothing by that other than that every aspect of there relationship made it the best i ever had, just a side note)

I have scne a lot of post similar to the one im creating now. basiclly, im doing the martial arts one, to perfect my character, two because i LOVE Asian cultures and three, to compete in a tournament setting, perhaps professionaly. this is were some people stick there tounges out at me. perhaps for one thing because they dont see self deffense on that list anywere. will, thats not really why im doing it. sorry. i mean ill learn it and everything, and im sure it will come in handy as i may be doing some work in law enforcement/security. but i just love the combat sports. i love the ring, i love the two go in one comes out mentality of bruteness that goes with the theroy of the ko. i love how the crowds seem to be in combat just as much as the fighter. Litsening to 'Eye of the tiger" gets me feeling all warm and glowing inside and i just get excited thinking about it. (please, no one tell me i should be oing boxing then, i dont want to!) so i just want to know if anyone treats there style as i do, or has these emmotions and if not what are your opinions on my purposes (all three of them) for becoming a karateka. ~~~Fireka
  20. okay, i didnt say it was, and i dont claim to know everything. I have no problem with my mom, shes really cool about it and thats why im training now probably. my dad is, what word can i use to describe this without offending anyone?...ah! Pro-confedarate you might say (if you catch my meaning) which in and of it self isnt bad. But he constantly wants me to do marksmanship, which i tried and am just not that good or intrested in doing. it was fun to try, and i dont mind shooting with him now and then, i mean he is my dad. But what makes me mad is that he also has a lot of very taboo social prejudices against EVERYBODY! every time were at the dinner table somehow the conversation leds to bashing some other culture, the only people he puts up with are those with very direct roots in this small little corner of south eastern USA and ireland (since my mom and all of her side is from there, i was born there, and his family has a history there) this espicially bothers me because my intrest is in world culure. id love to be a liguist, or a proffesor of world cultures. right now im thinking about being a linguist for the police or millitary if my martial arts carrear dosent kick off oir i dont publish one of my books (all of which have to do with forign culures, most are fiction and deal with the more fantastical elements of said cultures) he freaked out one time when he saw a japanese victory scroll hanging on my wall. my made him shut up though. he drives me crazy! how can he be so ignorant?
  21. thats what i did one day. i had to go to work at 4:00 pm, so i rented them all and started watching at four am, got done with number five at 3:45! you should see my room, its like a rocky shrine!
  22. Last week, i purchased the ROCKY DVD box set. this is in my opinion, the best series of movies ever. i just wanted to make this thread sort of as a tribute, since movie 6 in underway. whats your favorite rocky? least foavorite? what about scences and character you like/dislike, and your opinions on the over all script itself (which, if anyones intrested, i can email you the original script)
  23. what about those boots? ive never worn any are they quiet or something? do they help in climbing?
  24. karate woman, only if you do stupid stuff! if that would just cut me a little slack i wouldnt be like that. i mean come on! whats so rebellious about karate training? 'Oh no dear, he is learning to have character! weve lost complete control!'
  25. see, thats why i hate parents! i feel your pain but honestly theres no reasoning with those ppl! just try and ignore them, i admire your faith!
