there's still conditioning maybe not to the same level but if there were no conditioning my forearms wouldn't be black with bruises - sure i don't beat them against pots full of sand or woodchips but they can take a fair a bit of pounding.

blocking a haymaker punch (John Wayne Punch)
theswarm replied to Shotokan_Fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
haymakers have heaps of blocks to them jodan age uke, kake uke, uchi uke, soto uke, shuto uke (i can't remember if this is the right name for the knife hand block) if you do an uchi uke you can apply an armlock and smash the other person into a wall as well if you like jiu jutsu has some nice blocks versus the haymaker that end with the other person on the ground with their shoulder locked -
this school isn't connected to the IOKA does this mean it's not a real kobudo school?

too many people know I do karate when i first started friends use to throw punches and the like at me every now and then they try, but usually they get hurt when i block them (i don't even block hard), my friend that is new to judo always trys to kick me in the the shin and trip me and stuff...we don't do that much in sparring so i'm not as good at defending that but sometimes as a reaction i actually end up hooking her leg and tripping her -

question about cross training

Go Ju (is the one that is combined with kobudo at this dojo) and Go Kan Ryu according to a friend that used to was a fairly high belt at Go Ju that's now in Go Kan Ryu it's very similar except the katas and the sparring -
I'm considering taking on kobudo - the only kobudo school near me is part karate but i'm already taking a karate that's very similar to that style do you reckon it's a risky move studying two similar styles of karate?

Any good Karate films?
theswarm replied to BKJ1216's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
the matrix is full of karate -
but all the kung fu guy did was hook his legs together - i think the BJJ fighter was less skilled than the one that went against the karate one. the karate guy kept trying to grab the BJJ guy in the face and the throat - and he kept holding close to the BJJ guys body - which as a BJJ friend of mine showed me that's something they do to stop getting hit you like grab onto their body close so they can't get range for punching you. ill have to give those other ones a look

while i'm not discounting the style of BJJ i know it's fucken awesome did any of you notice some major flaws about the karate guys and the kung fu guy versus the bjj guys? hello! stances! those were 3 of the worst fighting stances i've seen considering the training and arts that those stand up fighters were doing - although i have to admit that shotokan blackbelt didn't do too bad when he was on the ground but he got set up into that position (showing what great strategy grapplers have on the ground) i would like to see a fight where the karateka uses a more lower and wider stance not simply stroll in and charge at the fight. anyone got any judo or aikido versus bjj fights? I reckon that'd be interesting to watch (from those fights I saw, assuming those were good representations of Bjj i think it'd be pretty interesting)

i've heard of htis movement before in my karate dojo we practice six foot circles in sparring but the triangle is kinda similar

good and evil is determined by society's norms but if every individual views something somewhat differnetly then how can it be determined collectively? I don't believe in a greater being, if a greater being created the universe then what the hell was the greater being doing before they created the universe. Where did HE/SHE/IT/THEY come from? Religion is a system of ideas and morals set in stone, religion is generally always based upon the same principles of altruism, child rearing, community etc. I do believe that a human being should never be forced into a religion, by forced I am also talking about given something from birth, in a vulnerable stage of your life. I disagree that religion is necessarily the opiate of the masses, how can we expect people to find themselves when from birth they're always told the standards and ideals they have to conform to. The only thing that caused me to renounce the religion given to me from birth was simple curioisity, a damn lot of thought, etc. What makes you be Christian rather than Buddhist? or Buddhist rather than Muslim? There is the same amount of evidence supporting any of these religions, but they're all claiming to be the right one, and they're all full of failsafes....more so in christianity and islam that discourage questioning the religion. Anyway I mean no disrespect to those who choose religion, I'm just posing some questions - after all it's your life and your choice and I respect that as I feel my choice and my life should be respected.

prepare for a bit of a rant : back to the original discussion topic which really was to generate discussion about censorship. My personal views on censorship are that censorship should be in the hands of the individual and not the government. I believe my right to choose is an extremely important concept of freedom in a society that claims to be all for freedom but acts everything but. I do, however, believe in warnings - after all if I am not in the mood for watching excessive violence then I'll know what not to get. As someone pointed out earlier, when a child is below the age of being able to work - the providers, who are the parents or guardians, have choice of what the child consumes, unless you're giving an allowance and hence giving them the choice over what to save their money for and buy: you're saying you're old enough now to choose what you want to buy. So why punish them for making a choice you don't recommend? can you say dictatorship? There will always be people arguing for direct cause and effect theories saying that monkey see, monkey do. I know my own difference of right and wrong, as a kid i knew the difference of right and wrong. My favourite type of movie is a horror movie. From watching violent movies I never blew up a building, assassinated, murdered, or maimed anyone. What i've found from my own research (I studied this at Uni) was that those calling for censorship, or those who were actually the censors themselves failed to comprehend what was happening, or the context in which they were watching something. I think the main reason why GTA got this attention was that the person that got killed was a prostitute. This, to someone who hasn't seen it, implies sexual violence. How many games though can you think of where you can disperse friendly fire on people who are on your side? I was playing Halo on the Xbox once and i shot some guy on my own side till he died by accident - but I could've chosen to continuously shoot him deliberately had I wanted to, did this get attention for that? No. What about the 6 O'clock news beaming into every home across the globe showing scenes of violent wars and the like... should we ban this? the sad reality is this is avoidance and not resolution. You're not educating any child by covering their eyes and ears and locking them up in a prison of deceit. Violence, poverty, famine, etc etc are what goes on in this harsh world every day, I would prefer people educated than people hidden from the truth. How are we ever to solve these problems if all we do is avoid them at every turn and try and convince ourselves with our nice meals, comfortable beds, time consuming internet, that if we use trickery on our children and ourselves these problems will just solve themselves. It's funny that people have brought the rap culture into this arguement, I was actually thinking about this recently and rap is one of the most misrepresented cultures in the world. Most of what we all know of rap is a record company creation cashing in on image and sexual oppression. Though what real rap is, is poetry fighting against oppression (well not all I guess some is about feeling good and partying hard). Like any other style of music, it's not for everyone - but being someone that gets into many styles of music I appreciate great hip hop like Public Enemy.
