  1. One, and that was the basic blocking form 1...
  2. Ed Parker kicked his ass on a regular basis... But that's Ed Parker.

    Keichu

    haha
  4. Open hand all the way...but you must know how to use your inner chi before it will be effective.....the same can be said for a punch is some regards, but a punch can still have some effect w/o chi and is typically learned first. It is all in your comfort level.
  5. I like over-selling moves for my younger kids for fun, but in general I think it is required to learn and understand techs.
  6. It does seem to be a McDojo in many regards.... There should be at least a 4-6 month period between lower rank belts, and a 8-10 month period for the middle to upper ranks. If students can't handle that then they shouldn't be in a martial art. Heck it use to be white and black... Testing every two months is insane, I can't imagine every two weeks.... How much is your belt testing? Is there a stripe system? What type of things does your instructor teach outside of the TKD system? Does your school take anyone, or do you have to try out for a spot in class?
  7. Ninjitsu doesn't have ranks does it?
  8. It could also be falling to the ground and acting like Jim Carey in "Me Myself and Irene". There's a 90% chance (if he's not on PPC) that the thug will simply throw his hands in the air and walk away.
  9. 1 1/2 years total time??? I have heard 4 years from most guys I train with, what school is this and under what tree?
  10. 6 years for junior black, then as soon as I hit 18 I was allowed to test for Shodan. Which was 11 years...but that is Kenpo for ya. Any place that is under 7-9 years is to fast imo.
  11. Good speed for a heavyweight...
  12. Yeah same here, 2nd Kyu is 4-5 years at the least....Some places are way to damn fast...anyways Karate is a good self defense...but learn some from other systems as well...
  13. I find it more in my lower ranked students. Our black belts are pretty humble for the most part.
  14. Self Defense...I am in Kenpo, so I really have no other answer
  15. I still love my old Juka Gold uniform, but lately I have been diggin just training in my street cloths.
  16. It won't really matter until you wish to open a school or wish to train under a legit master. Then on the other hand if you know your stuff, then that will show....One way or another you can be a certified blackbelt...
  17. Reps with weights or weighted gloves.
  18. I am 230 and can kick to the head but I prefer using my hands. It takes time to develop your legs to kick for maximum speed and power on snaps. Kicking is not a natural thing, think about when you first learned. Kicking to the head is almost impossible your first time out. Especially if you have some meat on you. Karate, traditionaly only kicks as high as the floating ribs. The same thing with kenpo, even though modern schools teach kicks to the head. Most Kenpo Karate schools teach Juijitsu, so I believe that would suit your body the best, especially if you want to stray away from the high kicks.
  19. When you reach dan rank you don't register your hands as weapons. It is funny how some people actually believe this. I hope no one in here does. Kenpo Karate is a good mix of Shotokan, Kajakenbo, Juijitsu, and Boxing.
  20. Well said, you should be well past trying to wait for openings. They happen and those quick reflexes take effect.
  21. I told one of my brown belts this the other night.....it is so true...great post.
  22. Most of the students I talk with outside of my school claim it is a sport. I tend to disagree since street self defense is taught at more and more schools(TKD) these days. Adults and teens for the most part, want to know how to protect themselves not compete in the ring. Knowing this TKD schools would be foolish not to offer street sd.
  23. Well technically its just a hi-low sound....but most teach it has ki-ai. A lot of people know I am in the MA since I have a school, but no one has questioned me or my ability. If they ever are to call me on it, I guess I could charge them to see.... j/k
  24. I took Aikido then Kenpo and I would say it is a good mix as well. Nick Cerios Kenpo teaches Kenpo Karate and Juijitsu...Which in it self is a good blend. But I would say Aikido is an excellent style all it's own.
  25. https://www.nickcerioskenpo.com there is a section with all the kenpo/kempo masters from the past and present....
