Your current instructor's faith is your saving grace right now...14 years ago is very tough to prove and shouldn't even matter at this point.

I remember having to trek over an hour a couple years back, but now it is less than 3 minutes...

Rank wise I may be Yondan or at least close in Kenpo... I would like to take up and really train in BJJ, which looks great from observation... Maybe study some other systems as well.... 10 years is really not that far away....

Sandan since 2000. So I will be this rank for a long time...

4 is the absolute youngest but that is rare... I would say 7 is a good age for them to really have a sense what is going on....

I have seen plenty of women take out men in full contact fighting. In most cases anything can happen in the ring.

Are you content with yourself?
SandanPJ replied to TheDevilAside's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Content?? Yes Complete?? No 18 years of training and I still have a long way to go.. -
My 3rd Dan test was very similar.. I basically stood in the middle of the dojo with my eyes closed. Then on comand I would open them and have to fend off what ever came at me. This was after a long and grueling test which was outside on a hill slide which was pretty steep and full of brush. Basically did grappling and basics on a 45 degree slant. The day was literally a blur and I was glad just to make it back to my bed in one piece...

Judo a martial art?
SandanPJ replied to superfighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
More of a sport. -
This would not stand in New England, where is this happening? Just a 100 mile radius will do.

Each test varies for BB in Kenpo... I had to do way over 100 pushups, but I have heard of guys in my system that had at least 1000. There is also a good amount of running involved(10-12 miles). So physically it should be test. The big part of it all is to see one at complete exaustion and then see what they can do with nothing left...breaking the spirit A writen test is required in my system. But it is a week before the test. The test usually runs 6-8 hours. Not counting running... The Kumite varies as well. It is usually full contact sparring against 3-5 BB that are chosen.

two cops, one angry dude
SandanPJ replied to Thuggish's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Stupid indeed. -
^^^ Dito here as well for Nidan I had to sit in a horse stance for two hours which was brutal. Sandan was much more mental and it seemed to be more of a teaching seminar...

Did you have any formal training before you went solo? Learning from a book is limiting your self. Forms are taught wrong on purpose for many styles. Since most of the true meanings are hidden. You could take one form and produce 10,000,000 bunkai for it. A book shows the path, but doesn't show what lies on both sides on it. My advice would be to look for a YMCA. They offer help and usually have a MA or two. It may not be a Grand Master, but it will add some depth to your training.

35 min test? I may have said something too...hahah

Depends on the total number of full-time instructors and students...

Why does everyone use the name "karate"
SandanPJ replied to TJS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The KARATE Kid.... A movie which spawned some interest during the 80's.....Maybe if it had been the Kenpo Kid or Kung Fu Kid we would see otherwise....That was half serious.... As said before, Karate is a generic term now. -
Which Nationals?

We don't spar with equipment, so most matches come down to who locks up the other person first. Not much time to think, all reaction.
