  1. Power in punching unites at the arm from six points of the body. Foot, knee, hip, shoulder and fist. This forms a more forceful punch through basic mechanical principles (ie the vector addition of force and momentum.) Forwards momentum from puching forwards off the floor with your back foot is combined with angular momentum from the twist of your hips and shoulder, and more forwards momentum from thrust forwards your arm. Power does not come from the hips but from the whole body. Karate emphasises the use of the hips because it is one of the most powerful and efficient way of adding mometum and works defensively (if you move backward to counter as your enemy attacks, and then suddenly try to hop fowards to punch, your forwards and backwards momentum will cancel and your blow will be weaker, so you use your hip instead.) However we should look outside of are art for new methods to integrate. The shoulder spin of boxing, the swinging punches in choy lee fut, cyclic punches of Wing chun which bring power up from the feet without pushing on it, and the circle steps of bagua are really powerful. Not to mention absorbing and returning the enemies force. Hove fun!

  5. I've started using a makeshirt makiwara (a tree) but I'm not sure how to start using it. They say hit it buts its more complicated, do I start at full power. How can I stop myself chickening out when it comes to shin kicks (which hurt like hell when you start)?
  6. Agreed. Similar vthings happedned to Shotokan though. So maybe its a human thing not an MA thing?

  10. Its possible to block punches, just hard. Best to use a fence to maintain distance and give yourself a bit of warning. I personally liuke two methods, one for each martial art I pratice. Karate: Step to the side with my right leg (this is from the view that I'm in a left sided shizentai and he punching with his right so it comes from my left) while rising my left harm in a shuto-uke/soto uke hybrid. That is my hand comes from the inside out but arcs down and forwards to cut into their arm and driect it downwards at the elbow/bicep or forearm. Kind of a sharp diagonal and forwards wax on block. Then couter with a hard right gyaku tsuki to the jaw line with full hip, shooulder and foot twist. Lights out! Second: Jiu-jitsu. Step forwards and to your right while raisng bothe arms to block. Left hand (now back hand) perfroming same actiion as above but angles tighetr to cover jaw and adapt for your step. Rigfht hand (now front hand) Stikes shuto to the bicep or my favourite, the carotid artery. Then follow with left gyaku tsuki, or shift grip for hip thows (tsuri komi goshi), grab shoulder for tai otoshi, or seize hair left elbow smash (ala naihanchi kata) into kosoto gaki or harai goshi. Maybe one day I'll have a blend of both to tell you about.
  11. False. In okinawa However the earliest forms of martial arts were indian such as Kalirapayat and Mhurma-adi. And yoga originated in india which was the basis of the exercises taught to the Shoulin monks by Daruma (also called Bhodhidarma) and many martial arts including Karate can trace a line back to there.   12. Yes, but knowing the location of a dojo doesn't help all that much in finding a good spar? I'm a bit of a shrinking violet (is that too feminine a term) so ringing everyone and saying Hey can I come and spar is hard. Plus how to get a nice free spar, and not a tippy tappy point spar. Something for all ranges too? Also as I've said in another post, transport and money are hard to come by. Overall I think I'm screwed on the budo front for the summer.

None of my friends do martial arts, and unfortunately I lost ties iwth the people from my old club (not that we were ever that close, we hardly saw each other outside the dojo, we had seperate lives and I'm a lot younger, I think they saw me as a punk kid). None of the people in my martial arts clubs now live close by or really liked the idea of some free sparring (some people?). The only person is my bother and he works ALL the time. I do read MA books lots of 'em, always have. And IKF (need some more now, may get one on BJJ don't have much on the ground fighting scene) but reading is no help with out a partner to train with. I do kata, but my determination is seriously waning with no class and no-one to keep me going. With finding a job and helping my mom, its an effort to stay awake. I do try but I have a problem in making such training habituary. Pathetic aint it? How can I get over this? Its one the spirit is willing but the flesh is lazy.

  15. True it wasn't pleasant to look at. But from what I saw I think I could make out Boztepe trying a choking Keza Gatame. Never seen a real martial arts challenge (y'know like the old days) thats not been part of some sport. But that did not look like the conduct of any true martial artist never mind a sifu and a supposed Grandmaster. And doesn't really refelect the practise of Wing Chun.
  16. Excuse me while I rant momentarily. BUT I'M GOING INSANE!!! I've just returned home to my sleepy town after a year at uni, so I'm back with the fo0lks for the summer. No more equations But no more martial arts. NOOOOOOOO!!! I think I'm starting to get withdrawal symptoms . My old karate club packed in when my because of a lack of students and injury to my sensei's knee. The only club in town is a TKD Mc Dojo, (no offense to any TKD students but this club is really a buisiness with gis, not a school of martial arts). I have no drivers liscense, very little money (uni parties drained my funds) and no way to travel to any other clubs for either Jiu-jitsu or Karate. from three or four sessions a week to nothing. I can't even put up a punching bag or makiwara (well I have one of those executive air filled office punch bags, but its not much for power or impact). And I'm ashamed to say there is a limit to how many times a persona can do the same techniques on air and do the same kata. Besides without my club mates my dedication is starting to wane (how Mas Oyama trained in the wilderness on his own I don't know.) The martial arts are the most important thing in my life, and they've been taken from me for 3 monthes. Perhaps its a test of my warrior soul of some bushido stuff like that, but I'M GOING CRAZY . Sorry about that I just had to vent. Anyone else go through something like this and have any advice. Any other opinion of MA nightmares. Anyone else need vent anything. C'mon you'll feel better I did. Advice please , how do I deal with this?

  18. Emin Boztepe had trained in grappling arts and did what grapplers do. He took Cheung down coz he knew he couldn't deal with it the floor.

  21. I've read alot of people rightfully dissing (can I pull that word off?) the traditional fighting guards and kamaes taught in karate, TKD and many martial arts (eg Hanmi Kamae). So I thought I'd ask, whats your stance? In sparring or actual fights how do you make ready, do you even bother? C'mon make this one a nice friendly, debate?

  23. What I meant was in the early days of the UFC most fighters faoght people from similar styles. Just coz there is high school/wrestling doesn't mean that everyone knows its tactics. How many people but fans of wrestling, wrestlers and their families watch the matches. Why would your typical WC or stand up fighter want to watch it. These days the shoot is expected from grapplers because it has been exposed on the UFC. Before most people stuck to their own styles and the common view of wrestling involved Hulk Hogan. The point I was trying to make in the first UFCs people wasnt quite sure what to expect from any style because they stuck to their own. Recently you've scene good standup fighter last longer against shoots and takedowns coz they expect it and are prepared. The results show that I'm just offering an explanation that is fair and unbiased to any style. Just my opinion. That said on a Pride contest I saw a match between two grapplers that hardly went to the floor, it was all stand up. A Japanese shootfighter tried using a fence and thus disabled his own shoot attempts, then got his butt handed to him because his opponent had cross trained in Muay Thai. Everyone makes mistakes, and unexpected things happen.
  24. IMO the guy lost because he did not expect the shoot and was unprepared for it. This is probably the reason most stand up fighters lost so quickly in the early UFCs, because then such contest was new and the shoot was completed unexpected to the Stand up fighter. That said, I watched some Prides and UFC recently and the stand up fighter are starting to learn. Some of the wiser one are beginning to either avoid or sprawl with the shoot. But I think the more recent rules to favour the grappler. I can explain this in more detail later if required, but I think the old rules (though the new are justified) were fairer to a range of styles. Also Kirves is right, WC and other arts dont train for the shoot or such tactics because for self defence is really not neccessary. Vale Tudo and other arts include this training because of the sport element, but many styles do not compete this way or wish to (maybe they are discouraged from early losses and the so-called grapplers game). So if a WC or other fighter wanted to compete he would have to learn these things elsewhere. Thus cross-training. However if he learnt these things and used them efgectively, would he still be standup or would he have become a grappler. That is the question.
