best place to hit sumone is groin and knees
SoulAssassin replied to mostsolid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well I know there are laws of excessive force. Something along the lines of, if someone pushes you, you in return cannot break there neck, or knee or anything. You can only apply the pressure they have applied to you. For instance you come up to me and push me and I say hey man, no problems I dont want to fight. So you swing at me. I can hit you back, and go on to put you in a armbar ready to break the arm, but I cannot break the arm because you still have the chance to give up and walk away. Now if you kept comming at me, I have the right to justify all force except death to stop you from comming at me repeatidly To be honestly I would rather neither be in a hospital or jail. Just becarful when mauling someone, that you dont have a lawsuit in which you cannot justify your actions. Telling the judge 'oh he swung at me so i broke both his legs' isnt going to cut it, unless he swung a baseball bat at you or the person is a repeated offender. Trust me I worked as a Security Officer an now had 6 felonies at 17 and I delt with actual Police Officers all the time being po'ed that they hated how criminals could shoot at them, but they werent aloud to shoot them back if they ran, because your legally not aloud to shoot someone who has their back turned to you. they have to be shot in front of the body and even then cops get sued for shooting someone in the stomach because of the pain an agony they went through. (the felonies I wish not to talk about but I was able to become a security officer at 18 because it wasnt processed, though I had to quit the Security thing because of the felonies. I made a deal with the DA that will let my record be exponged in about 6 more months if I am good though) I get where everyones comming though. I would personally try for knees, throat, eyes, nose, FISHHOOK! -

*new headlines* Parents find new ways to beat children, where you say? Their nearest martial arts school. just kidding, thats pretty comical.. -
also they says that using free weights helps the muscle more then machines because most machines isolate thw working muscles. as for a curl machine you might just use the bicept

muscle pain is normal. i worked with a lvl 4 (lvls 1-4 4 being highest) personal trainer and he said muscle pain is a torn (not as in ripped apart i need the hospital as in torn an rebuilding bigger) or stretched (easy term) muscle. when muscle is 'torn' it rebuilds itself bigger and allows you to lift a little more (not saying that the next day you can lift 20lbs more, gradual over time). I train 2 different ways an have seen good results off of it, remember everyones different. first way i train is if i have time that day to do a full workout. say if im doing curls (not isolated) with a curl bar (not a straight one) I put 1/4 my max on to warm up, i usually to 2 sets of 8-10 reps to warm up. then i increase the weight to 1/2 and do 2 sets, then 3/4 same thing an then my max an i do it as many times as i can for about 2-3 sets. as in if my max curling on free weights would be 100lbs i would start with 25lbs 2 sets to warm up next would be 50lbs 2 sets to work my way up next would be 75lbs to get the muscles pumping last would be 100lbs to try and build a bit once i find that the weights are starting to be easier then i would throw on 5-10lbs more. if i dont have time to train an i want a quick work out (not always the solution) ill do my warm up weights till im ready, then ill start with my max weight as many times as i can, and with my way down 5-10lbs each set till im just curling the bar, and when you get to the bar it feels like your lifting your max. funny story when i was doing that and i was just lifting the bar a couple of guys were laughing at me because i could barely lift the bar when i was done, my arms were burning so bad. an i told them my workout, and they could barely go through it. got them to stop laughing. oh one more thing, general rule of thumb. to tone lift lighter weights more times (10-15 reps - 5-8 sets or more) to build lift heavier weights less times (5-11 reps - 3-5 sets or more) depending on your body. im done jabbering.

Beijing karate??
SoulAssassin replied to Monkeymagic's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I was thinking that to Monkeymagic. Why dont you try to do something they specialize in over there, make it worth while, and then once you get through with it go back to karate. Broaden your horizens unless you just really really like karate. (also i would think in beijing almost everywhere you go is going to be in their native tongue, as most places are in like the us) -
I would like to be different and do something like hunter green or something. Black is my favorite color though so its hard to decide.

When I first started Tang Soo Doo when I was like 7 or 8, somewhere around then.. My parents paid 1200 bucks for a year (i thinks its like 100 a month), and depending on how well I was determinded what belt I was. I went from a white to a black in a year (then I thought it was cool, now I hate it) because I was a 'quick learner' and joined 3 different clubs (free). I could only go certain days of the week, and I had to pay for tournies.. After that I found 3 different private instructors I trained with up until the past few years, now I train myself (more so brushing up on skills) but 2 of the private instructors were free the other I paid 30 a month to (if i had it) and he would teach me whenever we both had free time. Sometimes M-F from like 6-9 an S-S 8am-8pm doing various things. Just look around to see what you can find. Theres bound to be something decent around you.

Just a fun hypothetical question
SoulAssassin replied to Shorin Ryuu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would get rid of it. It is nice to know what rank you are an where you stand with the rest of the world, and honestly I know that I hate not knowing what I am. The only reason it would be good to keep is for bouts against each other, obviously you know most white belts wouldnt really like fighting a 4th degree black belt (considering they both only know 1 style). I just hate seeing 8-10 year olds running around with a black belt, and other people that are black belts an abuse the fact that they are an have swollen heads about it. If it wasnt for the things I just said then I wouldnt mind the belt system. -
Dont forget to stick around and tell us how you like it!

Yea I agree with wearing one from all experences.. I was wrestling in highschool about 3 years ago and there is a move to get someones arms out from underneath them when your laying stomach down on the mat, it involves your knee between the other persons legs and your hands under their chest then you very aggressivly slam your knee up at the same time pulling the persons arms out.. and guess who was on bottom without protection (that last part didnt sound very good) ------- this is non MA related but when i played baseball about 3-4 years ago I was playing shortstop when i caught a line drive in the cup, yea it shattered. no real damage done except mentally when the next practice came i just about ran from the ball lol..

Lets Discuss the "Dim Mak" (Death Touch)
SoulAssassin replied to GoldDragon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Also when I visited a kung fu school in phila the instructor who supposebly knew how to perform dim mok said it was in the region around the heart area, and you had to poke or strike a certain point. Are you saying that they CAN be done with no contact or that they CAN't be done with no contact...I kind of read the sentence both ways at once... Could you clarify to me your thoughts on the matter? I believe JerryLove was saying that he read the 2 posts above his and the problem with the 2 posts above his state that it can be done with little or no contact. (as stated above mine doesnt say you dont have to make contact, it says you have to) -
Lets Discuss the "Dim Mak" (Death Touch)
SoulAssassin replied to GoldDragon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I didnt read every post, but I heard that in order to be able to perform dim mok you have to have liike 10 years of iron palm training (or iron fingers for the poking aspect) under your belt, so that your finger tips are like metal. Also when I visited a kung fu school in phila the instructor who supposebly knew how to perform dim mok said it was in the region around the heart area, and you had to poke or strike a certain point. To me it would be like saying hitting a major arterie or something which would cause it to pinch an stop the blood flow or when it un pinched create a little air pocket which would later travel through the heart and kill you or something.. I dont know.. -
Thanks, everyone. To those who think meditating with music defeats the purpose, its true and not true. It helps stimulate the brain waves, as insense just helps give you a more relaxed feeling. Then again its like telling a newbie at meditating to clear there mind, when thats almost virtually impossible because when your tell someone to clear the mind and think of nothing, its hard for them to understand because they think about clearing their mind and usually get lost in the 'black hole' as i've heard before, haha. [edit] I do find that training in nature is best though, for me its perferred sitting or standing on a boulder (or dirt) next to a tree near a running stream.

MMA Grading
SoulAssassin replied to SoulAssassin's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Thanks for the information everyone. I understand a little better now. Coming from private trainers not using ranks or titles, an not a school becomes a bit confusing sometimes. Even thought ranks dont mean anything, Somtimes its nice to know where you are on the totem pole though, to see how far you have came from something. I rolled with my friends sensi from tiger shulmans about a year or two ago an he was impressed, and said if I only knew kata I would be more better off. -
I think this would be a good topic, unless there is already one like it. I have been away for awhile so I am not sure if there is a topic on this. I hope to stick around for awhile now though. Well let it rip, what is martial arts, to you?
-
I heard there are actual MMA schools that teach multiple arts but combined in one. Is this true? If anyone knows of this, what would they call their 'teacher'? Sensi? Sempi? Mr. Bob? Do they have actual names for ranks/strips? Kyu, Dan? Just wondering if anyone has the answers, Thanks! [Edit: I know it says MMA in my styles but my main study was Tang Soo Do - I learned other styles from training with a private instructor and a friend an his dad]
