  1. I in fact agree with all of the posts above and also find great wisdom in Ninjanurse's post as well. It is possible to maintain standards while addressing the proclivities of the younger generation. Although it can feel like more work than it should be at times !
  2. Great minds think alike !!! I was delayed while typing but saw this reply when mine posted. Obviously I totally agree !!!
  3. I think you should stick with it and I can't imagine your instructor thinks your effort a disgrace. With regard to your disorder, I hope that your consulting a professional and make sure that the karate training does not interfere with your therapy if there is any. Otherwise, even slow progress is good progress. There are techniques I've been working on for years that need improvement - it's the notion of not giving up that makes it interesting in my opinion. Rather than focus on the negative, why not set a goal for each month that is achievable - and focus on meeting that goal. And I strongly believe the first goal should be easy and then they can increase in difficulty over time. For instance, if last month you attended, say 6 classes, perhaps next month the objective is to attend 8? Let's say that you can do 10 push ups, the goal for next month might be to work your way up to 12 push ups? I would make the goals realistic, and for starters make them about conditioning, and then about technique. You can really do this in a variety of ways but the idea is to make the goals about YOU, and not anyone else. I hope this helps and I do hope you'll report back. Would be cool to hear how you're doing.
  4. I completely agree !!!
  5. Totally agree with you about Jones. There's no question that he's an immense talent but the nonsense is not becoming for someone contending for GOAT honors.
  6. By the way, rumor has it that Cormier took this fight despite needing knee surgery. As much as I want to see this fight I do want to see it with both guys at their best. Although I do understand Cormier's decision. Title shots don't come often, and at 35 he's unsure of how he'll rebound from knee surgery. It's a once in a lifetime chance, he had to take it. I respect that. Should be a good one !
  7. I am really looking forward to this fight. I want Cormier to win but it's very tough to bet against Jones. Actually it's tough to bet against either of these guys but my money is on Jones by decision. Predictions?
  8. Love the part where he bows everyone in.
  9. What a lot of people fail to realize with a workout program is that it should be progressive. In much the same way as a martial art. You start with basics, and then you slowly add more and more. So if you're doing a workout at home, start writing down what you're doing. If you are doing 3 sets of 20 pushups one workout, try to add 1 rep every workout. So instead of 3 sets of 20 you're now doing 3x21, then 3x22, then 3x23, etc. Then you can start adding sets, decreasing rest times, super setting with bodyweight squats, etc. The point is to keep some type of SMALL progression in there to keep getting better and better. The same goes for running. There isn't much that beats running for weight loss. Start with a light jog at 5 minutes. Do that 2-3 times a week. Next week add 30 seconds or 1 minute. If you feel really good one day run longer. Just have a set amount of time to run and add to it so you are always getting a little better each time. Don't think about these things in short-term. Think about where you want to be a year from now. Or two years. And think about the small goals you can accomplish on your way to help that long term goal. If you add 1 minute a week to your run, at the end of a year you're running an extra 48 minutes! That's a LONG run, lol. Also, use a common sense diet. If it used to be alive(animal or plant) then it is probably okay and healthier than the alternatives. Meats, especially lean meat like poultry and fish, fruits and vegetables(fresh), and whole grains. Excellent post !!! Completely agree especially with the notes about gradually increasing duration and intensity. Several months in to training and if you're taking to running a rule of thumb is to increase your weekly run total by no more than 10%.
  10. That's interesting My instructor says about goal setting: "If NOTHING is your target, you'll hit it"
  11. Shrine? Not sure what you mean...although I may reconsider a full-size bronze statue of my self or framing the poem that I had written about....myself. Just kidding. Fair point although this is for my garage / training with few if any visitors. It's meant for more of a memento rather than a shrine. For instance, I still have my very first motorcycle helmet that I got when I was 9 years old. Brings back many good memories. I still have my very first BJJ gee - has a few blood stains that I'm very proud of to this day. The belt "display" was meant along these lines. And I suppose I may be brainstorming ideas because I don't want it to look like a shrine. Anyway, food for thought, you raise an interesting point. Will think of something. The training aids idea is interesting....
  12. I like shut up legs - funny Sometimes while teaching something new he'd say: now practice only 10,000 times. The delivery was spot on
  13. I like all of the choices and I could never pick a favorite - just too many good movies. Interestingly I see that Rocky is nowhere on the list. I know that boxing is not the first thing we think of when one says martial art, but it is, and it's one heckuva movie.
  14. Very cool. Didn't know he was such a celebrity !!! Does he practice anything other than Ameri Do Te? I know I know, Ameri Do Te renders all other arts obsolete...
  15. This is a great topic. Haven't thought about this before specifically but as I reflect I realize I teach exactly as it was passed on to me. In some part out of respect for tradition but primarily because I truly believe in the efficacy of what I was taught. Where do I differ from my instructor? Well, my instructor spoke and provided excellent guidance about the benefits of healthy living but I think there's more information available to my generation on lifestyle and nutrition. I've taken the time to really educate myself in this regard and pass it along. As to the fighting techniques specifically, my only hope is that I pass them along as well as they were passed to me!
  16. Yep, yep, and yepper !!
  17. Hilarious Happened upon this. Thought I'd share. Might be old since I'm usually the last to find out about stuff but for those that are unfamiliar - enjoy !!! [/url]
  18. Thanks guys !!! Cool ideas. I looked up the cylinder thingy and it's pretty cool. I also like the one where they're kept in a bag and shared with those who forget their belt. Definitely cool and outside the box for sure. I actually like that a lot !!! I have a detached garage that I've converted to a training studio for me and my kids. We're the only ones that use the space. The idea is for us to have these displays on the wall with an organic feel and to bring a sense of color into the space. Less neat and tidy and more lush and colorful. By the way, please don't get me wrong, it's not about showing off because we're the only ones that use the space. It's more about personalizing a very personal space. I've been thinking about making a display that has a frame at top with a bar below the frame, parallel to the frame, where old belts can be hung like neck ties. Hmmm....maybe I use the old belts to create a colorful window treatment. Nah! That wouldn't be right!! Please keep ideas coming if you have more !!!
  19. HBD !!!!!!
  20. Wow great article !!! There sure are some smart peeps around here !!!
  21. A fine choice indeed !!! I'll admit I'm a bit sad to see the rainbow thingy go but am stoked about it going to someone so ridiculously awesome !!! CONGRATS !!!
