Due for yellow with OGKK in April 2014
Dani_001 replied to Dani_001's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
I seriously need to put the work in. This is a personal-based grading. Just me and her. I asked her to push it back by two weeks just so that I can get my fitness levels up. I have been VERY lazy for the past five weeks. This morning I made a serious change. And will carry on now. No more bad eating. AT ALL. Thanks for the motivation peeps. -

Thanks Patrick -
Hey peeps. So in two week's time I will be starting Kobudo with Okinawa Kobudo Doushi Rensei Kai. First weapon to learn is the Bo. What other weapons does this system have? I know wiki has answers but I wanna know from those who actually study the system. Thanks in advance.

I will try I was texting from my phone this afternoon, I never saw that the tai sabaki vids were added lol. However, I did mention them without no knowledge of the links. #martial spirit. OSU!

Gekisai dai ichi Gekisai dai ni Saifa Seiyunchin Sisochin Sanseru Seipai Kururunfa Superempei Seisan Sanchin we do occassionally in class, becomes more NB for brown. Tensho 4black http://www.goju-ryu.co.za/index.php/kata That is the site. We actually learn both sanchin kata.

Tai Sabaki can be a difficult concept to grasp at first. Learn your stances and evasion techniques in all directions. Imagine yourself as a compass. So when stepping in or out, evading in or out you will know exactly where you need to be. I know this sounds vague, but I hope it helps.

OSU, from Cape Town, South Africa. White belt Goju Ryu
-
Another thing Goju Bahrain, how is Uechi Ryu for you? We unfortunately don't have it here in South Africa.
-
This is exactly what I was thinking. I am gonna drop the idea now. And just do the Kobudo with my Goju Ryu. Thanks very much
-
Nice one ... really liked it Thanks. Maybe that's what Oyama Sensei meant by "Ultimate Truth". He gives you everything.

What I liked about my try out class in the week was the Kumite drill combos. Was very practical and can be applied to real life situation. Thing with Kyokushin is that when you train, you get the car and the keys, and driving lessons With Goju Ryu, you will spend time on perfecting technique, most of the time and the Kumite drills you do is point orientated. In Goju Ryu, you are more prone to making your own decisions on combos, which takes time and not everyone has the patience to do. I know I only did one Kyokushin try out class, but this is my conclusion on it (so don't judge me).

From what I understand, there are different forms of Shotokan governing bodies? Also, JKA governing body for Shotokan, as I was told, is the best and they stick to everything from Gichin Funakoshi's time?

Here is the site for the kobudo: http://www.goodwoodogkk.co.za/okinawan_kobudo_cape_town_goodwood_south_africa_matayoshi_system_9.html Link doesn't exist anymore.

Thanks friend, I just came back from a lesson now... What I forgot to mention is that we also have an authentic Matayoshi kobudo system in Cape Town. Every second Tuesday after Goju Ryu lesson. First weapon is the Bo, I need to get one...

How different isTSD from TKD?
Dani_001 replied to amolao's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Just remember, ethnicity has nothing to do with anything. Mas Oyama was Korean, and he became one of the greatest Karateka ever. -
Hi all. 2017 Post: Hey peeps, so I realized three years later that my opening post is not quite intended to what it's supposed to be. It states "My journey back into Goju Ryu" but it doesn't state why I went back to it. Well, in 2000, I actually started my journey of Martial Arts with Karate. I never knew much of martial arts, but I was an overweight kid with spectacles, so I also couldn't play any of the conventional sports (rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket) due to my spectacles. I then remembered that at high school there was a Karate school. I joined there and had the time of my life. I lost weight, I became confident and became strong. We were always mocked by the conventional sports guys(which I presume is normal) because we were different. After my final year, I lost touch with the school. By then, in their curriculum, I studied their version of Goju Ryu(which was shotokan, goju ryu, shito ryu) as they promoted their own style. I had no idea that they were a McDojo and that their gradings actually meant nothing in the real world. No disrespect, just saying. I then began my years of college and started working. In our Central Business District, there was a Wing Chun/Sanda/ Shaolin five styles school and decided to try something different. I didn't stay long there mainly because I didn't work long in CBD. I then moved over to Seni Silat, which was promoted by a teacher in the greater Cape Town who had come back from Malaysia after his training there for a while, and he was practicing in one of the mosques. I really loved the Seni Silat, I still do. But I was belittled by some of the Muslims because I have a girlfriend, and obviously in Islam, having a girlfriend is frowned upon as marriage is the proper way but they never understood that she has always been there, and at that time, I just recently became Muslim for myself and I wasn't prepared to throw her away because of some idiots that had no say in my life and now they want to say something. So I left, also because the instructor did absolutely nothing about it, in my opinion, he was weak. The rest is history, and now you know why I have names this post "My journey back into Goju Ryu. Actually, the REAL Goju Ryu, and not some McDojo Goju Ryu. 2014 Post: I trust everyone is well. This will be a blog type post as my journey into Goju Ryu. I have started my training once again as of the 6th of February 2014. We have two classes a week. Tuesdays and Thursdays. So far, lots of progress in terms of fat loss coupled with my gym training as well as Karate. I have learnt a lot so far. When I started again, I found out that we actually do Irikumi in our competition and that is what I aimed for in March this year. But alas, martial arts stamina and cardio levels is much different to that of an all rounded gym training person. So I pulled back on the Irikumi as I need to learn so much more in terms of Irikumi and Kumite techniques. So, I decided to rather do the kihon division for first comers and karate practitioners coming back after a long time, I came third. I know this competition aspect may seem boring, but I want to grasp the holistic aspect of Karate (even though sport is not a real aspect of -te). I am showing a lot of enthusiasm in the classes and my Sensei is seeing it. She is about 1.55 metres tall and seems soft cos she's thin, but she actually trains us hard, but without enforcing instruction. I like that. It allows for improvement and no one feels depressed or pressurized. My first grading may come up sooner than I think and I am well into Gekisai Dai Ich and Ni. But to understand will take time. Peace out.

Mas Oyama did it... so lemme try as well lol. I have an ability to separate things when needs to be, and join where it can be sync'd.
-
What I am saying is, can both be done at the same time achieving good results?
-
Is there anyone here that has done this? What are your thoughts and how did it leave you?
-
I can't place my finger on it yet... That's the weird thing. But those guys really have a go. I did enjoy the class overall. Maybe it's because I am curious to see what the JKA Shotokan has to offer. We'll see what happens. I was sweating a hell of a lot though
-
Found an authentic JKA Shotokan school close to my new workplace, going to try it out on Wednesday
-
So,... I decided to try out a Kyokushin class... Kyokushin-Kan by Hatsuo Royama. One of his best students, Hennie Bosman has a honbu here in Cape Town. Those guys really push hard... Although I am doing Goju Ryu, I liked it. But only to a certain extent. I haven't been to our Honbu here in Cape Town for the Goju Ryu, I am with OGKK... maybe that's why... where I am training now is in a primary school classroom... I am white belt, but my fitness exceeds almost everyone in the class besides my sensei. This makes me a bit despondent because she doesn't really push the other seniors harder because they are over 35 and they are overweight and slow. I am not downtalking my fellow karateka but I feel stagnant. Unfortunately, Honbu OGKK is like 35 mins drive away from me and fuel is exceedingly expensive. Wednesday, I am gonna do a tryout class with JKA Shotokan and see what happens...
-
The OGKK is down the road from me and I never knew it. They are Goju Ryu and I used to do Goju Ryu as stated before. I have joined up with them as their knowledge is rich and vast as well. I feel that I will learn a lot here as well. Any art is only as strong as the versatility of the student, the knowledge of bunkai from instructors and again the student, his innovative skills.

Very true. I was looking for a holistic approach. I hope they do Kobudo as well, which I will ask Monday at at the demo class
