  1. Kata-geiko is the breath of traditional karate. Very important.
  2. I have Ryu from Street Fighter to thank for this... It's simple. The kanji on Ryu's kuro obi states the following stemming from the battle standard of Sengoki Daimyo "Takeda Shingen" quoting chapter 7 of Sun Tzu's The Art of War: Furinkazan "Wind, Forest, Fire and Mountain" Move as swift as the wind Stay as silent as forest Attack as fierce as fire Undefeatable defense like a mountain I hope this helps you on your journey.
  3. What everyone said ^^^ I learnt from this too. Thanks. I am looking at a life partner also in my class. There are two in particular, and a third. One is green belt, and the other is brown. We go fairly hard to execute the techniques correctly, with much control. Sometimes they make class and sometimes they don't Then there is a senior-junior (under the age of eighteen) that is orange belt as me, he is regular with his classes. He is reasonably good and we learn from each other, he lacks confidence but I always try to bring the best out of him. I don't mind taking him as a partner, but the problem with most students his age is that once university years/ college/ technikon years start kicking in with responsibilities, most students his age leave the dojo for a long time. Someone's signature on the forum states: "Sweep the leg, no Mercy." This is exactly the same mindset we should have even with our friends/ training partners. I taught the orange belt senior-junior last night in the fourth bunkai of Gekisai Dai Ni that this applies. I am quite strong (due to powerlifting and weight training) and quite grounded in my footwork so his first attempts were futile, apart from his lacking confidence. Then I built him up nicely and gave him a pep talk. After that, he executed the bunkai correctly and took me down lightning fast and I made him practice all night. He thanked me and told me that that was the best class he ever had. I will keep faith in him, and I will continue to build on that relationship.
  4. Never bro! If Stormers don't make it, then I vote Chiefs! Haha!
  5. Good morning KF'ers!!! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend, just very upset that my Rugby team lost against the Crusaders this weekend (for those who watch Super Rugby). Anyways, this Saturday coming will be my first grading for the year. I feel that I'm not ready, I also don't feel worthy... but alas I will press on. So my grading consists of three elements. Kihon, Kata, Bunkai. My Saifa is a bit dodgy but everything else seems fine. I will be looking to get a stripe on my Orange belt. Any tips/ recommendations you can give? Thanks.
  6. I have met Shihan Anver Wahab and he made me feel at home. I told him of my history of martial arts and said I need a place to settle down. If you read my journey, which is one of the topics, then you will see. I did an introductory class and I literally was in a puddle of my own sweat. I loved it. In fact, his dojo is two minutes drive from my residence.
  7. Still haven't had a chance to visit the Enshin Karate dojo. It's too far out for me. I think I will relax on it for a while. But just up the road from me is a Seido Juku dojo. I didn't mention that I had tried a class out there and I was very impressed. Quite exhilirating and fast paced unlike Goju Ryu. In Goju, we focus a lot on kata and bunkai. I am yet to see how Seido Juku does things.
  8. Hi peeps, I just wanna know if anyone has a decent link to Seido Juku katas? Maybe JR 137? I would like to roughly get an idea of them and how they work. Thanks.
  9. Trust me, you're not the only one. I'm going for my Orange +1 in this month and I don't feel ready to be honest. I did well at the gashuku in March but we'll see how it goes.
  10. Thanks JR. I'm going to check a class out in the week. Would be nice to do a fighting karate and traditional karate. I had a look at the videos. And the grandmaster of Enshin seems like a sincere man. He seems a lot like Kenji Midori and Tadashi Nakamura. He also reminds me of Ip Man funny enough. Constantly evolving and perfecting technique.
  11. Thanks JR. So would you call this "fighting Karate" rather than traditional? I would like to see how their bunkai is applied.
  12. This is my dream as well. It's up to us to create a generation of well learned and respectable karateka or any other style.
  13. Thanks for the information. Always willing to learn.
  14. Hey KF'ers, Just wanna know if anyone has any information regarding Enshin Karate. Today whilst walking on the beach, they had a gashuku. Their style is quite unorthodox from what I've seen and it spurred me on checking their kata on Wikipedia. Their kata looks completely different to what I've seen and I don't wanna judge, but how does their system work? Thanks.
  15. When I saw Sepai, I nearly fell in love and broke it lol. It's one kata I strive to do some day. Seisan is also a beautiful kata. Miyazato lineage (OGKK)
  16. In Karate, a strike is a block. And a block is a strike.
  17. Leg throw, not familiar. in which kyu?
  18. Hey LLL, The reasons for techniques seemingly not appearing as they are, especially and most importantly in kata, is to hide it. When bunkai of kata is applied, you will see it unravel. I hope this answers your question.
  19. Well done, that's amazing! I wish I started younger, it can only get better!
  20. Safroot DEFINITELY gets my vote! Really helped through my queries and with his wealth of knowledge, I was blessed. Well done Safroot!
  21. Thanks guys, I watched the film already but wanna watch it again. It was available on youtube a while back but has been removed.
  22. Hi fellow KF'ers Do you know where I can stream the abovementioned movie? Thanks in advance.
  23. Standard bunkai is imperative in my books because it opens the possibility or ideas into opening your own understanding. Most of the time after I learn a bunkai, I often do something...innovation. I add a lot of my own strikes and kicks in class. But standard bunkai is very important to start this process.
  24. Well done on your grading! I came from different martial arts backgrounds before returning back to Karate. I started at my school as a white, and when grading came, I skipped yellow, yellow + 1 and went onto orange. Same story as you. I can tell that you too have firm understanding and you do the best that you can. Never lose this humble attitude, even if you see that you train much harder and better than grades higher than you. Stay the way you are, because we can learn from everyone, even a white belt.
  25. Happy Birthday! Thank you so much for all the beneficial knowledge that you give to us! I hope you have a splendid birthday and that you are granted a gold edition Arawaza Karate-gi LOL
