  3. Respect sure does go a long long way also does humility. Its good that you went back to the very start to relearn everything as a sign of courtesy. Also if you had gone back straight as a brown belt people might have thought you were some poser or who the heck would have graded you to brown belt.
  4. I find it interesting how some schools have different ideas on what colored gi's people should wear. My school lets us wear what ever color we want but normally everyone goes for either a full white gi, white top gi top and black gi pants, red gi, or red gi top with black gi pants (so like a santa ninja). But the red gi and its variant is reserved for black belt and above
  5. 25 Squats 25 "regular" pushups 25 "Tricep" pushups 25 sit ups 25 crunches run 15 minutes at moderate intensity 10 hill sprints (20 Degree incline) 3 sets 10 minutes shiko dachi - pivoting hip thrust - Pivoting hip thrust and recover 30 minutes of kata - equates to 5-6 kata

  7. I sure hope they do learn from it. Especially if they are preparing for their black belt grading and not taking things seriously is a massive worry. The last 2 students who were promoted to their shodan-ho they act like complete buttheads often but they do take things seriously when were training. And took any advice on board and improved on it.
  8. Not only do I watch people but I look at people for a potential threat. If I feel there may be a potential threat I'll look for any potential weak spot if they do actually attack me. but I also look at them going "what did they do to themselves?"
  9. That is a good point. But, in a wierd way, they kind of help by exposing others to the Martial Arts to begin with.That's the only good thing they do [making people aware of Martial arts]

  11. I do goju ryu karate and bjj. I've used both in different situations before. once when I was already on the ground at the beach and was able to use my bjj training to defend myself. And my karate 4 times before and all times was lucky that I wasn't injured. Every time I was able to restrain the person effectively and strike hard enough to stop their attempts of harming me but not hard enough to injure seriously.
  12. Tbh I people watch on a regular basis (purely because I get bored really quickly). And I have noticed how people walk and how they show their confidence and other aspects of themselves. I have many friends who have unfortunately gone through the criminal system for several different reasons and they all have told me that their victims were easy prey because of different reasons. But they are all reformed people and their sentences were less than a year and weren't crimes that you couldn't get a visa because of it. They have told me that it was because their victims were smaller, weaker or (not trying to sound sexist) females. Or that was because it was at night or their hands were full.
  13. I like those kind of promotions in class. its the fact that every class you might be pumped about it.
  14. Oh and I coach occassionaly as well and what I was told by my coaches (when I was a competitor and becoming a coach myself) was not to give instructions every few seconds. I am allowed to cheer all I want but telling them what to do I have to hold off until the break in between rounds. As several of my students who compete (I have 4 nephews and 3 nieces who I coach in my team also) and they all are still learning who to compete so I do give them advice on what to do (like "use your kicks more" or something like that). Most are dependent on me doing that but most after the first round have picked up valuable Intel on what type of fighter that person is. And also for future fights where people fight like that. I mean that if they fight someone who is a counter fighter and learn some habits of that person and that type of fighter then for future fights they see those movements and that they will go "OK they fight like this so I can prevent scoring by doing effective techniques against it"

Tbh I think he is becoming too dependent on what your telling him to do. what I mean by too depedent is that in sport if you rely so much on someone else that their restricting what they could potentially do. Especially when it comes to thinking on their own and acting on what they see. It doesn't mean stop telling him what to do all together but perhaps less will help.

  17. I agree with what DWx says. and also he needs to be tought different ways of fighting and kumite combinations to be able to fight effecfively outside of his safety net
  18. Well done!! Well deserved! Our chief instructor has "secretly" assessed several karateka at my dojo since I moved to his dojo.

  20. Thanks all for your support. she is getting better now. Well the student that I cracked on about finally got what came to him. He was barred from grading for the next year due to his actions against certain members of the school.

  22. Forward rolls - get them to crouch down, and if they want to roll over their right shoulder tell them to tilt their head to their left shoulder. So they can go over their shoulder. And similar going backwards. Unless someone more experienced can tell me otherwise
  23. Exactly!!! You get hit one too many times in a spot you learn to go "no not going to get hit there again"

It is frustrating by the sounds of it to have no contact. where I train we have varying amounts of contact that is allowable. such as is awase kumite where we a good flow of techniques but is light contact (best for our juniors). Then point sparring for our competition students. Light sparring which is a lot of contact but you still need control (sweeps takedowns throws and leg kicks allowed) And lastely full contact which our black belts and certain brown belts are allowed to do
