  1. 100% to both Co-operative and Competitive, as you will inherently want to compete with each other in the dojo whilst training. Usually it boils down to who does it better, faster (or slower), stronger etc. However everyone who is competitive in my dojo are doing it in a friendly way. And will go "haha i beat you there" as a result and never use violence as a result.
  2. Thera Bands are a fantastic tool to use and will stay for a long long time. As they are great for Strength, Flexibility etc. Especially where you are able to change the angle and motion on different muscles. I personally use them for learning correct order of motion and muscle activation. Along with training my muscular endurance.
  3. I have a feeling my dojo will see an increase for a time, although with a higher drop off rate for those only joining to try and get on the Australian Squad to compete at the Olympics if any get into one of the events. I doubt we will change how we run our classes, maybe with the exception of adding extra classes where we can to cater for those extra numbers. But the one thing we will never do is water down our classes, for those wanting to do Sport Karate. They have to go through the ranks and earn them like everyone else.
  4. I'm not sure sorry if it is available online, and i'm coming from a Goju-Kai Lineage.
  5. It is usually for the quality of material and how long they will last. As they should resist wear & tear easily, along with being thrown a lot. I own a Seishin Gi and has worked really well, although i don't wear it on 30+ Degree [Celcius] Days.
  6. I only have ever demoted a student where their behavior was not up to par. Especially where they have been behaving poorly in Society or in Class. As we have expectations of students on how to behave and that there are always repurcussions for poor behavior. Personally I have demoted 3 people, each of them were either a 3rd or 2nd Kyu. I demoted them right back to White Belt (9th Kyu) and require them to regrade for each rank. As to remind them that there are consequences. Personally I have demoted myself once or twice because i felt like i didn't deserve to wear the rank around my waist. Both times surrended my belt to my sensei and asked him to only give it back until a time that I demonstrated the skills and traits of a Black Belt. 1st Time to Green Belt (5th Kyu) and lasted 6 Weeks. 2nd Time right back to White Belt (9th Kyu) and lasted 6 months. Sensei tried to return my rank several times, but i politely refused because i still felt like i didn't warrant that rank. Every student I teach or train with me understood my logic for this and respected that manner.
  7. Well my most reliable is Seisan (Surprisingly) as it does have several techniques that are unique to it and not found in other katas from my school. But my most knowledgable and capable is Suparenpei.
  8. Thanks all, i did have a good day.
  9. The Instructors normally are able to do that because of their experience and that they are aware and know how to make intent the driving force. Applying it with people is a different story however, for you it is a mentality that you don't want to hurt them. Which I can completely understand, however what you can do is if the person you are working with can take a serious hit that go ahead. You partner should tell you want that is hard enough, and that you can also see that if you go any harder that you could cause damage. I was always taught to adjust how much force I put into my technique dependent on the size of my opponent, their age (if training etc) and their physical build. For instance I can hit one of my best friends as hard as possible without problem (He wants me to hit even harder) and he is 20, whereas I wouldn't do the same thing to a 13 year old with the physical maturity of a 16 year old.
  10. 17/3/17 NOTE: All Weights are in Kilograms (kg). Leg Press 3x12,10,8 180, 210, 240 Rowing Machine 2 x 1km w/ 4 min rest Level 10 total time 15 minutes Bulgarian Split Squat 3x10 17kg Bulgarian Bag Bench Press 3x12 60kg
  11. I can understand the indecisiveness about getting back into training and where. But that is great you found one dojo to train at and stick with it. Keep at Kyokushin for a while, then when you feel ready you could always add a 2nd MA if time and $$$ permits it
  12. Wish I had that experience, because every time I order one size larger for shrinkage, it never shrinks enough. 2 inches lengthwise seems to be the magic number for me. After that, it doesn't shrink anymore. I had someone in my dojo have the same experience as I; he ordered a Shureido gi a size larger than normal, desperately tried to shrink it, couldn't accomplish it. He ended up selling it to someone, just as I had to do. Maybe gi's do shrink significantly over time, but I really don't want to wear a gi that's slightly too big for a couple years. Besides, at that point, the gi will start to show its age. Thats why when I order a Gi I never expect it to Shrink, but will oder up a few sizes due to being heavier set requiring more room. So I just get it taken up to allow me to wear it, but will normally wash it a few times to see what happens prior to the adjustment.
  13. Welcome to the Forum Ryan. Where in Australia are you located? As several of us are from around Australia.
  14. We came 4th overall out of around 60 Clubs. It was Kimekai, Shindo (your club) and Kakushinkan that beat us.
  15. I believe it is ok to allow other MA to utilise your club space when it won't interfere with your normal timetable. Besides it will only add potential new members to cross train.
  16. Lost in the first round 5-0 and lost in Repechage 4-1. Twas going to say hi when you were on Tatami 2 before everything started. But you were busy with the little ones warming up. Missed out on a potential state team invite. Haha. But the competition was tough today though, considering it was essentially a state team battle.
  17. So today (Sunday March 5th) I will be attending the AKF (Australian Karate Federation) - Victoria State Championships. This tournament is the highest level tournament in my home state of Victoria. It operates under the WKF Rules as the AKF is my Countries National Federation recognised by the WKF. I am 1 of 17 on my division which is one of the largest of the day. Will keep everyone posted
  18. Well thats a huge achievement having that many people promoted to such grades!
  19. Welcome to the forum, the most popular ones that you linked are Yamaguchi Sensei and Higaonna Sensei. There is no right or wrong for kata, as there will always be some variation on kata and no one right way. This is because the IOGFK (Higaonna Morio) and IGK (Yamaguchi Gogen) are the two largest Goju Schools worldwide as such those two variants are more common. My Dojo has the Goju-Kai Lineage (Yamaguchi), as such perform it that way but with a slightly different variation on timing where we are slower. Doing Kata is good yes, but for you it may be even more beneficial to train in a Dojo as you have said because that will increase your Heart and Lung Health, along with your overall health. Also have you thought about or started going to a Gym with supervision from a trainer to help with your health?
  20. Usually depends on my mental health then go from there, then on top of that i'll go by what i'm focusing on.
  21. Yes instructor training is worth while, I recently completed one this past weekend. You can attend ones that are designed by your Government because they will cover what you need to know additionally with information regarding policies. Here in Australia we have the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS), which covers: - Harrassment - Consent - Coaching - Communication - Learning Styles - Legal Information - And a few others. For us it to allow us to have some accountability and that we have been trained to teach/coach with specifics whilst following the law.
  22. Its a school based thing. At my dojo for sparring we utilize gloves, yet for the punching bags etc we do not use them. However our senior yudansha do not often use gloves for more of a realistic approach to training.
  23. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEVIN!
  24. New students I would NOT permit them to participate because they are very new and have no ways to manage it. At my dojo they do not start sparring until they have their 8th kyu.
  25. Normally it is important to get a medical release. Not many owners would be willing to enforce it because it may mean fewer students would be willing to sign up. And that would mean that it could be harder to balance the books at the end of the month. What I do with any new student is doing a risk stratification which means that i could get an idea of whether it is safe for them to start or for them to get a check up first for their own health.
