Depends on your Club and Organisation. At my dojo, once you become a Black Belt you can choose whatever color you want for embroidery (if any). At the Present Time there are 4 different colors that the Black Belts have chosen for Embroidery. Yellow, Orange, Red or Silver. I am one of the few people that have Yellow Embroidery, because when I received my BB it was the only one available by the manufacturer of the belt.

I'd recommend getting a Gi altered if one particular type fits well, especially if it suits the climate that you live in. Where I live in Australia, the temperature varies anywhere from 4-5 Degrees Celcius (41 Deg. Fahrenheit) to 40 Deg. Celcius (104 Fahrenheit). Then combining it with me being overweight a gi that keeps me cool is vital! I have a Jols Gi (not sure if sold internationally), which is really light but is probably at max 8 oz. And it isn't great if you do a lot of groundwork. Whereas I also own a Seishin Gi, which is a heavier gi and if you live in a hot area might not be the greatest if you don't have air conditioning. Although Both go really well being altered and from what i've found it hasn't compromised the quality of the uniform in the slightest

At my club when we receive our Black Belt, we are Shodan-Ho instead of immediately receiving the full rank of Shodan. For us that is to ensure that our students are fully aware of what is required of them as black belts. As such we do: Shodan-HO: Seeiunchin, Sanseru, Sanchin, Tensho Shodan: Sanseru, Seisan, Sanchin, Tensho Nidan: Seisan, Shisochin, Seipai, Sanchin, Tensho Sandan: Shisochin, Seipai, Kururunfa, Sanchin, Tensho Yondan: Seipai, Kururunfa, Suparempei, Sanchin, Tensho Godan: Kururunfa, Suparempei, Sanchin, Tensho Rookudan: Suparempei, Sanchin, Tensho

How to brush off the rust after a hiatus
Nidan Melbourne replied to RobertAslin2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well you can start with Basics + Kata, both fundemental Karate. When i took time off training, they were the two that I went back to when I returned -
Coming from the Health Field, we lean towards the safer side of things because we need to think about the long term with patients/clients. As such we have to take that into consideration when prescribing something especially exercise. Because if we don't think long term it can mean that the person we are working with could have long term problems. Even when we go to make adjustments like increasing weight for people to lift, push etc we ideally make adjustments of around 5-10% of the previous weight. When we look at people who have mobility issues; like hyper + hypo mobility, we actually need to be even more careful because of the changes in their skeletal structure. If we're not careful there is a risk of long term damage. Obviously we can't evaluate every single student in class or those signing up. But we can get some idea about their mobility from seeing what they can or cannot do.

All my old belts are unfortunately collecting dust in my cupboard at home. And just don't have the space to hang them at home. If I wanted to display them, i'd have to make something because they were all tied up by my sensei when i was promoted to the next rank. Any display i've seen are for belts as they were when you received them and not for ones that are tied into a knot. But for my Black Belt, we keep the same belt instead of receiving a new Black Belt every time we are promoted. The only time I think my sensei will award a different belt (to a Black Belt) is if he decides to award a Candy Stripe (Red + White) Belt or a Red + Black Belt.

Just got some exciting news that my sensei has just signed a lease to expand our club. We are now as a Club have 2 Dojos under our banner head, and full of excitement for the time ahead. And it was where both myself and my Sensei had graded at the same location many years ago when it was a different karate club.

It will be an interesting fight to see, considering Mayweather definitely has the Boxing Experience over McGregor. I see McGregor having potential issues just using his hands and no other body part. If he [McGregor] wins, I feel like Mayweather will probably call that someone cheated or the match was fixed.

I think it will definitely be a massive boost for Australia. It will just more place a strain on the tournament organisers to get more officials trained up to do each division. Otherwise they'll have to increase tournaments to a whole weekend, instead of the local tournaments being 1 day. It is hard to tell, because each country is different and many have more competitors in either Kata or Kumite. Currently per country these are the Top 5: 1. Japan 2. France 3. Turkey 4. Iran 5. Australia Too early to tell, as is all sports when they are introduced to this type of overall competition and atmosphere. Yes these Athletes are used to the Big Tournaments, but they haven't been at this type of competition where it is even bigger than they are used to. This depends on the individual clubs and associations in how they deal with the new interest in karate and the potential demand for competition karate. Whether they add Tournament Specific Classes only or just add more normal classes to cater for the increase in students.

Usage of a Whiteboard
Nidan Melbourne replied to Nidan Melbourne's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Havent seen a Blackboard in Years! They were phased out when I was in Primary School! Context: they were called that because the board was literally black and a board -
How are you conditioning yourself?
Nidan Melbourne replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in Health and Fitness
Depends on the type of Conditioning that you are referring to, as that will vary of how often you should be undertaking it. The Second that You start conditioning it should be for a express purpose, usually a health reason. For instance Osteogenesis or the Formation of Bone. Which we do focus on a lot in Martial Arts is highly beneficial due to the fact it prevents/reduces the risk of Osteoporosis. Is it conditioning of the Cardiovascular System through Aerobic and Anaerobic Training? Where the conditioning often takes the form of Endurance Running or Sprints. And the Result is a Reduced Risk of a Cardiovascular Event. Muscular Conditioning? Different parts of Hypertrophy, Max Strength, Endurance etc. Very great to prevent skeletal problems down the road like Lordosis or Kyphosis. Along with other issues with poor muscular health. So to the "When" Question, it depends on what your wanting to achieve out of that conditioning and also what segment as well you are trying to achieve. "When" is inevitably tied to "Rest" because where you overtrain without the appropriate rest, then injury may occur. -
As an instructor, do you or any of your instructors utilize a White Board to help demonstrate your point when teaching? Where my dojo is located inside a Community Recreation Centre, they left one inside our room. Since I was the Lead Instructor for all our Classes on Wednesday, I used it to explain various points to my students so they could see it in a different way.

Kohkotsu Dachi + Kiba Dachi are definitely different from what i've seen over the years. Kohkotsu Dachi (Shotokan) is more weighted over the back foot with the other leg more straight. Kiba Dachi has both feet pointing forwards and weight equally distributed. From what I have seen especially from competitions over the years, is that some people go very very low in their stance and the two become indistinguishable from one another.

Sports medicine vs Mother nature
Nidan Melbourne replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in Health and Fitness
Sports Medicine is very athlete focused for prevention and maintenance of their physical well-being. Yet they have clear borders of what their jurisdiction is and what they aren't allowed to do due to their Professional Training. Although they are able to develop amazing treatments that work wonders for athletes and non-athletes alike. But many who work in this field do often work with those that aren't considered athletes. So they will assist those wishing to participate in Sport at the Domestic Level. In my field of work I work more with Non-Athletes, in which are those people that aren't on a State or National Team that competes in Sport. Whereas Athletes are those who do compete at a Professional Level (even those children who play representative sport in their respective state). We distinguish between them (Athletes and Non-Athletes) because of the different requirements of those populations and how they are having to train. So Sports Medicine comes in handy due to the unique nature of the treatment requirements of those people and how they should be recovering to prevent future injuries and muscle wastage. -
I balance the two out quite nicely, because I use different types of resistance to force me to be more precise at different times. If I want to hit harder and faster i must add some form of resistance. Why Harder = Faster? Hitting Harder = Force therefore Force = Mass x Acceleration. So if I had Mass (or resistance) to an limb or whole body, then add the requirement of having to reach a certain time or speed then I am having to be precise in my movements because if i'm not then injury may arise.

Does any school?
Nidan Melbourne replied to The Pred's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Your school removes grade? For what types of infractions, can I ask? I have never removed a persons grade and know of only one instance of someone loosing their grade and that was for a major integrity infraction of an instructor. Technically the grade could not be removed outside of the art as the student holds the certificate but within the art it is. I will only ever remove a students grade where their actions have brought Martial Arts into disrepute. Such as injuring other students with malice or lack of control. I disagree with your last comment in part because for me with every grade it has associated behaviours and attitudes with it. And every single one of my students understands that. As certificates are just a piece of paper, like how the belt is just to hold your pants up. Those students will receive their rank back once they demonstrate that they know and accept that all actions and have an equal and opposite reaction. As their actions will always have a consequence. -

Happy Birthday KF!!! I'm proud to be a member of such a fantastic community. And thankyou for the honourable mention Patrick. -
Personally I feel like a governing body is essential where a school grows in excess of 200 students or multiple sites. It is possible to start a governing body, where the person who starts it has previous experience in working for one. if you were to start one, i feel like you should have insight to how various governing bodies operate as to see how they do their thing. To sustain one without politics would be difficult due to the nature of how people want to run things. If it were up to me I would set out certain policies that have been seen as reasonable by various people that would not have a stake in said governing body. And even then said policies would be reviewed yearly to ensure that everything is in line with the governing bodies values and goals. And if anyone had problems with said policies they would voice their concerns and why.

Of course, i've branched out into BJJ and Balintawak Arnis over the last few years. I know that I have had to defend myself multiple times but there are just some things i would like to develop that i don't get out of those areas.
