  1. Better dojo will normally take priority and then cost factors into it. Both Shotokan and Kyokushinkai are good styles although i havent personally trained in either (yet).
  2. Welcome to the forum!
  3. Often these are best for those who are Semi-Professional or Professional in their selected sport. As they should have the knowledge of how hard to push themselves and also the knowledge of how to perform such techniques. Whereas the everyday person who isn't an athlete may not know how to do certain activities correctly. Therefore could lead to an injury that could have been prevented if they were taught and corrected whilst doing it. Personally I don't see it as a "Lazy Way to Train" because if you know what your doing then you'll be fine, if not then there is a risk of injury. Any exercise program should be tailored to the individual and not mass produced for the best results for each person. Like what I may require would be completely different to what you require. And in saying that I have tried several different apps or electronic training and haven't found that they work well. The most they gave me were different exercise ideas to do with my own clients (i'm in the Health Industry).
  4. First off welcome to the forum subjectkate. Have you spoken o your teachers?
  5. If I had a Superhero (and/or Antihero) as a Personal Trainer - I would go for Batman/Bruce Wayne because he doesn't have any Superpowers but he can hold his own against those who does.
  6. Speak to the Authorities in Canada and see if they have a Prohibited Weapons List online
  7. What I mean is Sensei8: When someone becomes part of the SKKA Heirarchy, are they briefed on any situations that have occurred like this. Where someone is expelled and barred from coming back in any capacity.
  8. Welcome on Board Karate Guy! I look forward to reading your posts down the road
  9. I've only ever had 4 injuries from Training, and in hindsight they were my own fault. - Dislocated Small Toe (I relocated it) - Hyperextended Knee (Ouch!!!) - Dislocated Right Shoulder (x2)
  10. Thats absolutely shocking that the Interm-Kaicho could allow such a thing! I'm assuming everyone was briefed on the situation re: the expelled San-Dai Soke upon agreeing to become part of the Association Management?
  11. Have they informed you of how long you should expect the grading to last for? Well from my experience in Goju-Ryu, it is different for us. As it varies so much club to club and also dependent if your part of a larger organisation (like the IOGKF). When I graded to Shodan-Ho, I had underprepared for the Fitness component of the who grading. Whereas for my Shodan + Nidan Gradings I overprepared and my fitness was well above what the "minimum" was. What we do at my club is that it is recommended that we do the following: - Train (in-class): 2-3x p/w - Train (Solo): 3-4x p/w - Train (w/ Partner): 1x p/w - Fitness: 4-5x p/w - Those whom are "unfit" or unable to reach a 6.0 on a Beep Test should train 6x p/w
  12. Nope no club i have trained/taught at has ever had that rule. Every student has received automatically their White Belt. So far my club (the one i just started) you receive it automatically. Students who have had their rank removed or they forgot their belt are a Mukyu (no rank) for that class or whatever period of time.
  13. First off welcome to the forum! I'm glad to see another Australian here on the forum! I normally recommend the Seishin Gi if you have the funds. Otherwise I say Adidas or Arawaza as i've tried both and work well. Shureido I've seen others use and works quite nicely. I compete in Kata with my Seishin and always performs nicely.
  14. Ranks are earned, and not something tied to money. Also relax and enjoy the journey, even when training is hard you will find things easier when your relaxed.
  15. I bought a pair for $20AUD and work great. Maybe have a look online to see what they have, especially if your concerned about cost.
  16. I have heard of the ADA (Against Doctors Advice). As far as i'm aware (not sure about in the USA) they can't stop you from travelling. However I believe there is a form they are supposed to fill out if you still wish to travel which is against their advice, and supposed to supply you with a copy. I respect your wish to step down from your role as Kaicho.
  17. Thanks all for the information provided so far. It will really help me with compiling all the info required
  18. Currently a Student, but I primarily work as an Exercise Scientist which I am authorised to do whilst studying.
  19. Welcome to the forum! and thats great to hear about you getting back into your training!
  20. Hi All, So I've finally taken the plunge and started my own school. Currently it is more mobile than fixated at one address, as i feel like this has an advantage at the present time (so Students can have more flexibility of when they train and where). What I am wanting to know is how have you created your own Database consisting of Student Records? have you gone the route of Excel or paying for a program like Martialytics?
  21. Ballistic Stretching when you look at it can be potentially damaging to the muscle in itself. Health Professionals don't recommend this form of stretching due to the increased risk of tearing muscles, ligaments or tendons. What a lot of athletes do is Peripheral Neuromuscular Facilitation these days when they are warm. As to allow an increase in ROM which is by far better for your joint and muscular health over Ballistic. But Research is continually being performed on the matter, and dependent on their variables will have different outcomes as to whether it is safe or not to do. So maybe in the next 10-20 years it may be shown that it [ballistic Stretching] may be ok to be performed by athletes and non-athletes alike. Alan you are correct in saying that people should stretch smartly, because a lot of people will only stretch one muscle group and neglect the opposing muscle groups. Look at the Upper Legs: you have the Quadriceps and the Hamstrings, then the Abductors and Adductors on the inner + outer Thighs. At the end of the day anyone and everyone can do any stretch that they want, and if they want to do so then they can do a Ballistic Stretch. As long as that they are aware of the potential risks that may be involved.
  22. Something sounds fishy if an 11 year old is a 4th dan. At my dojo we don't award a JBB. As we grade students to a Shodan-Ho Ranking and not straight to Shodan. All our students once they attain Shodan-Ho must complete Time in Grade. So our Juniors who wish to grade to Shodan MUST do the same requirements as our seniors. So they (juniors) will wait several years prior to grading to shodan so they can learn what they need to know.
  23. 100% to both Co-operative and Competitive, as you will inherently want to compete with each other in the dojo whilst training. Usually it boils down to who does it better, faster (or slower), stronger etc. However everyone who is competitive in my dojo are doing it in a friendly way. And will go "haha i beat you there" as a result and never use violence as a result.
  24. Thera Bands are a fantastic tool to use and will stay for a long long time. As they are great for Strength, Flexibility etc. Especially where you are able to change the angle and motion on different muscles. I personally use them for learning correct order of motion and muscle activation. Along with training my muscular endurance.
