  1. Welcome to Karate Forums
  2. There is a new Martial Art Studio opening on my block. called Cahill's Functional Fitness and Self Defense. Says it will teach "Street Combat JuJitsu" as the style. From the little I can find, It seems like the studio owners Michael Cahill own style mix. Mostly Small circle JuJitsu targeted for self defense, but not really sure. So, With that said. Anyone heard of this style, or have any experience in Small circle JuJitsu, or it's derivatives? I might just stop in just to see what it is about. I've been thinking about mixing it up some anyway.
  3. What do you mean by faster than anyone else? There is always someone faster, stronger, more agile, or just plan old more experienced. So how can you get better? Just practice and drill, not much to it really.
  4. Long Island, NY. Deep Hollow Ranch in Montauk is said to be the first ranch in the United States.
  5. Accidents happen, and you obviously had no malice. It's not even clear if the injury is solely from the hammer fist, you mentioned she wasn't feeling up to par to begin with. In any case the instructor watching the session said you did nothing wrong, and the parents understand. I know it's hard but try not to place blame. When she returns welcome her back and get back into it. I agree with Cathal. Don't allow this moment to hinder you in your sparring.
  6. I wash my GI by itself on a normal spin cycle and cold water as soon as I got home, then hang dry it. I keep my Gis hanging in my closet when they are dry. and only iron for special occasions when it needs to be crisp. But IMO, a gentle washing cycle, hang dry, storing it hanging, and avoiding an iron is about the best your going to get. Normal wear and tear will creep no matter how much we care for them.
  7. I agree with the others! anyone who studies karate is a karateka.
  8. Can't say I have, Did you ever bring it up to your primary physician? if it shows up with no abuse as you stated, I would get it checked out.
  9. I'm left-handed and primarily fight orthodox, I practice southpaw time to time, and will actively switch and hold my own while sparing. But oddly I feel a lot more comfortable orthodox. I would say just keep up the practice, and use primarily what feels comfortable for the time being.
  10. Congratulations!, and welcome. I took a similar 6 year or so break from martial arts when I was attending college and working full time. I came back, got into the swing of things and passed for my next grading that same year (it was my purple belt too). Just keeping working hard and you will do fine
  11. Again, Thank you all I got to admit the first day back on the mat as a black belt student was a bit surreal, The new rank and responsibilities are going to take some getting used too. And apparently I left a very good impression after all, with our Hanshi et al. that was good to hear. The best part of course, is now i'm free to really dig into the art, I love Theorycraft so this is going to be a fun ride. no time for breaks here.
  12. I've been thinking about it for awhile, so my cousin who owns a few shops on the island keeps asking me when I'm going to stop by and get one. My idea is something like an ouroboros mixed with a yang yang. But as of right now I got none.
  13. For sure! My Dojo is a nonporfit, we rent a local high school wrestling room for a few days a week. Heck the students of the high school don't really know of it's existence, other then a few fliers here and there during the start of the school year. We promote the club mainly on word of mouth. But the instructors are all dedicated to our MA, the small dues are just to cover insurance and rent. We do MA for love of it.
  14. Well I'm happy to report a pass! I'm now a freshly minted Sho Dan Ho. But did I ever feel like I was dying during the test. I was probably on the verge of a passing out toward the end. Was feeling nauseated, and trying to keep my gag reflex in check.. no fun. But I can't quit, you know. Hint: Never take a decongestant, I Think I would have been better off suffering from my sinus infection. But overall my damages are really just: 1. two bloody knuckls 2. A very, very tired body 3. People thinking i'm asthmatic or something now... all well. But overall, A pass is a pass. I think I made out well.
  15. Very cool, congratulations!
  16. So this is a question I've been asked, as a student of Karate my answer today is this: My club is like a second family to me, It contains some of the very few people I trust and respect. Trust and respect is huge for me, If i can trust you, I will go out of my way to help in anyway I can. My club is also the place I run away too, to forget other ills of the week, if just for a little while. Now I've been with my club for around 5 years, some people I know longer. Some of you I'm sure have been with your dojos/clubs for decades. So now it's your turn. What does your Dojo/Club mean to you now?, also did it change with time?
  17. Thanks all for the well wishes. I just got just a few days left until the test. Working on the small written test tonight. Which I find kind of nice, as it's making me reflect on everything up to this point. I'll report back after the test
  18. Good to know that general panic and overthinking everything is normal leading up to a Shodan test. Thanks for the luck
  19. So it's finally happening, I'm going to be tested for my black-belt in about two weeks, along with two other students. This is the first black-belt test in our Dojo in about 8 years; we even have some people flying in to observe. Needless to say I'm both excited and nervous... Well more nervous. Excited to be tested, nervous as I have no idea how this is going down, and I hope I’m over thinking a few things… But in the meantime I’m driving myself a wee bit crazy. So I wanted to put some of my thoughts down. At this point I basically convinced myself that I 1: utterly suck (unlikely), 2: that I’m over thinking, or 3: I am being held to a higher standard than the other students. I am hoping I'm over thinking, but there are a few little things bothering me that got me thinking. Such as having a Dan ranked Karateka (2ed Dan) for partner work, when the other two students wont. I mean it seems unfair to me, unless they expect me to have a higher standard then the others. In any case I'll keep following up with my experience over the next few weeks.
  20. I got a long rocky story, and "Started" a few times. the short version is I started when I was around 7. I was bullied, among other issues. Started in a small hole in a wall until the old man left or something. (too young to remember) then started at a tiger schulmann's at around 12, until the Sensei had a affair... that ended that for a while. Then I started at my current Goju school at around 18, stopped at around 20 for college. Returned at 28, and now being tested for my back belt in 2 weeks. it's been quite a journey so far.
  21. I would say a student is no longer a beginner right around 6th kyu, Green belt in my system. There is a dramatic difference between them and any white belt, and a observable difference even between them and fellow green belts at 7th kyu. time wise that would be about a 2 year average. But IMO it's relative to what you consider a beginner. As a student and instructor, I feel like, and am a beginner compared to some of the black belts and the head instructor. The difference between them and myself is staggering. But I'm barely crawling when compared to 60+ years experience of the head instructor.
  22. I have had flexibility and strength issues since childhood. Now it's really only limited to areas like my wrist which I can't fully extend back. Have been working to extend the range of motion as much as possible.
