  2. I just opened a club through the local Youth Center and will be paying $1 per kid per class plus providing my own insruance. I get 2 days a week (2 hours each) to hold classes.
  3. I'm with KChenault on the Easter thing...we celebrate a Messianic Passover and Resurrection Day instead. It is a fav of mine for personal, theological reasons but I do enjoy the 4th of July and St. Patricks Day too!
  4. Sorry to hear about your accident...heal fast! I don't observe Halloween myself but I can see how it would be a "bummer" this year for you. Glad to hear the school is up and running...we need some more pics of the kids!!!
  5. I too am a vegetarian. It is important that you are getting enough protein in your diet via beans, soy, etc., and not getting too much fat or simple carbs. Being a vegan I do not eat eggs or dairy either so my protein sources come from rice, soy, peas, and whole grains. Protein powders work well and come in various flavors and bases (rice, pea, soy, etc.)3. Increased fruits and veggies, whole grains, and water is also necessary when you are training as you need those complex carbs to fuel your muscles. As far as fat goes-processed foods are evil and should be avoided at all costs! Check the labels and buy/eat whole foods when possible. Lastly, 13 is an age when your body will be starting to undergo a lot of changes. Pick a healthy goal and stay at or above it as your body grows. It may be wise to enlist the help of a parent or friend to monitor you so that you remain healthy.
  6. I teach snowboarding which is quite the challenge and covers a broad range of ages, physical abilities and learning styles. I find this experience very valuable in the dojang.
  7. All BB at my old TKD school get hit with an arnis stick on the tush (one whack for each dan grade) after they recieve their belts. It is meant to be fun...and boy does it smart!
  8. Judo -4 months/no rank (school closed) Tang Soo Do-9 months/green belt (moved away) Moo Duk Kwan-6 months/blue belt (instructor left) Shotokan-8 years/Nidan (instructor moved) JuJitsu-6 months/no rank (adjunct training) Tae Kwon Do- 7 years/Sandan (moved to NY) Brazilian JuJitsu-1 year/no rank (adjunct training-moved to NY) JuJitsu-2 years/Shodan (concurrent with TKD, moved to NY) Kwok Wu Chuen-3 years now/Sandan (still truckin'!!) TaiJi Chuen-4 months/2nd grade (concurrent with KWC)
  9. Can't they just put the big "stripe" over the old ones?
  10. Never, ever eat just before class. Very bad, very bad..... !!
  11. Oops, forgot about the black pants thing in JuJitsusu Laurie. Only for special students...... !
  12. Each school within each style or each system has it's own personality and cannot be judged collectively in my opinion. I have been in several different TKD schools and they all have something different to offer when it comes to sparring (both Olympic and competive point) and self-defense. Therein lies the key to this whole argument...self-defense is not the same as sparring and there are those schools that teach only one or both. It is the schools that do not teach the difference between the two that are placing their students in a bad position. In addition, self-defense is not learned just in a "sparring class"-it is the art in-toto that accompishes this (for the serious student of course!). As far as a 10 year old Black belt goes...his/her power is relative to his/her opponents (or attackers) size. I would never teach a child to go toe to toe with an adult in the street-that is what chin-na is for.
