Deep Stances? Or powerful technique?
ninjanurse replied to Truestar's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Too deep hinders mobility and balance so one must consider the individual plus many TKD styles have "high" stances as the norm...I agree with bushido_man. -
Side Kick Question
ninjanurse replied to Tae Kwon DOH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree will tallgeese however, it does depend on the actual purpose of the kick. A "thrust" requires more hip rotation than a "snap" and the application will determine the delivery. In my experience, korean arts do not usually teach a "snap kick" but I could be incorrect. -
Your Opinion on Tuition & Attendance / Training
ninjanurse replied to Tiger1962's topic in Instructors and School Owners
This is a tricky subject. On one hand contracts make for consistent payment and clear expectations, on the other hand they are impersonal and make the whole thing seem "commercial" and distant. Month-to-month arrangements are more personal, yet lend themselves to inconsistent payment and attendance and you can spend a lot of time managing $$-clear expectations should be outlined at the onset to avoid mis-understandings. IMO-I prefer to cultivate personal relationships with my students and families which include discussions about what is going on in their lives and how we can best take care of them and their needs. To answer your questions: Yes, I expect them to pay whether they come to class or not; and yes, I would continue to pay when not attending if that is the expectation. -
Leniency on younger students?
ninjanurse replied to Truestar's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I evaluate each student as an individual within the standard. Their strengths and weaknesses differ and should be taken into consideration-up to a point. I agree that allowing sloppy habits to develop creates problems down the road and it is best to fix them early. Once my juniors get to blue or brown belt I have a pretty good idea of their capabilities and I start pushing. At red belt there is very little room for error and I do not cut them much slack. -
We stripe in between belt tests: 6 stripes in all for white-blue, 3 stripes for brown & red. It works well for most and keeps younger students on track for testing.

Instructing your own children
ninjanurse replied to white owl's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Been there, done that-four times! You must maintain the integrity of the classroom by disciplining ALL students the same and...let your kids know that they will not be given any preference over the others. You must also let them know that they have an opportunity every class to be role models for the others and praise them after class for their "assistance". They will test you occasionally and you have to be consistent with your response so they get the message. It is hard work but the more you "prep" them outside the class the better it will go in class and you will eventually have some great young "instructors" on your hands. -
All good advice. I require my students to bring water bottles in the summer time and make them take water breaks periodically throughout the class. We have air conditioning but the place is small and we heat it up with all our exertion so it is ineffective. I have offered to increase it but everyone likes it just the way it is!

What Fees are you Paying for Training
ninjanurse replied to marksmarkou's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
$18 per class. -
I ordered a "Challenger" judo gi (single weave) and it is true to size so if you like a roomier one order one size up. The quality is awesome, just a big snug.

It is a sanctioned WTF event-light contact to the head is only for Jr. BB's under 13. Otherwise you must cause "trembling shock" to be awarded points. Standard WTF Sparring(Gyuroogi) rules is not point sparring but rather continuous rounds...and you can win by knockout. This will definitely not be a light contact tournament!

Like I said....nice people!

AAY! Bushido_man..and check your ego at the door. It's no time for your uke to try to be a hero! -
I use Tiger Claw for my student uniforms and demo uniforms. I have a few of their uniforms that are 6 years old and still look good. I have been happy so far...customer service is great!

ninjanurse replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My hubby and I trained together for many years-he now teaches jujitsu. My oldest boy has a shodan in both jujitsu and TKD. My youngest boy is has a 2nd degree BB in TKD and is pursuing his BB in MCMAP. My oldest daughter us a 1st Degree BB in TKD. My youngest has yet to take her BB test-she keeps missing the test due to broken bones, torn knees, etc.! -
