A late 2 cents: Many instructors today bow to the pressures of our "feel good" social environment and therefore lose sight of the positive impact that etiquette and discipline can have on students. "Old school" can be effective in the "new school" society we live in...it just takes a different approach.
  2. I use push-ups for motivation only....motivation to go faster, follow the rules, get better at push-ups!!!!! Adults rarely need motivation but kids are a special case....I actually have kids )and adults) who love to be "motivated" and ask for more push-ups in class!!!! Punishment at my school is usually more along the lines of sitting out (for egregious violations) or a verbal retort either publicly or privately depending on the circumstances. Positive peer pressure can work wonders if handled properly! To answer the question: Junior students of any rank are not permitted to "discipline" another student and the same goes for adult colored belts. Mutual respect is the expectation for all students regardless of age/rank. Black Belts must be 16 and certified to be able to teach a class and only then are they allowed to "discipline" under the authority of the Chief Instructor.
  3. Joe, I think that today learning the korean names for technique is strictly for historical reasons-to keep the art intact as much as possible. My current Master, whose 1st language is not English, feels as you do-it is too confusing-so everything is taught in English as it would be translated from the original. The result, in some cases, are names for techniques that are as long as the korean!!!! I am more of a traditionalist and therefore keep the Korean alive by occasionally teaching class in Korean so the students get exposed and hopefully it sparks and interest to study it on their own. To answer the other question: We are required to write papers for each confirmed Black Belt rank and each level of Instructors Certification.
  4. Our Jr. BB's may test up to 2nd dan but no further until they reach 16. They then test into the next rank as an adult-the requirements are the same by then. The Jr's wear a Poom Belt-fully embroidered with name and dan ranking; the adults a solid black belt-also embroidered. Also, all black belts regardless of age wear a Black Collared uniform.
  5. Love the story.....I don't think she meant to be disrespectful at all. Trust is important and I certainly don't insist my students reveal their experience until I earn it-I respect their choice. It is another story if they have ulterior motives though...one has to be vigilant. I had a similar experience with gentleman who came in asking to just work out with us while he was in town. He gave me a brief history of his lineage and instructor and showed up for class in a white belt. He learned our techniques and forms,worked out hard, and handed me a business card after class so we could keep in touch....turns out he was a Master Instructor!

  7. Thanks. A crate is a small dog cage that serves as the pups "bedroom" when you are away, etc. Keeps them and your house safe! We use ours when we are away from the house...he likes it to get away and snuggle in.
  8. Years ago I trained UFAF...before it evolved into Chun Kuk Do. It is TSD based-we did pinan's.
  9. Mine is a Weimaraner/Beagle-although you can't see the beagle other than the fact that he is smaller. He is blue with blue eyes! I put a pic of him in the photo album.
  10. We have a new puppy too...just like having a baby all over again!! Luckily we are getting past the house training but the teething is in full swing! I provide lots of toys to chew and whenever he shews on something off limits I tell him to go get a toy and then praise him when he does-it seems to be working! We crate him when we are gone but he sleeps with us and, yes, gets on the couch! How can you have a dog that isn't part of the furniture!!!! He cries when left outside alone (what a wimp!!!) but I just ignore it for longer periods of time and he is getting better-it is separation anxiety just like when some kids go off to school the first year. Puppy classes start Thursday!!!!! Hopefully he will become a certified Therapy dog....if he passes all the tests!! Good luck with your pup!

  14. I myself prefer "inside-outside" but either has valid applications. I teach/train both.
  15. Modesty Integrity Courtesy Etiquette Self-Control Perseverance Indomitable Spirit Respect Have faith in your teacher and your selected system of martial arts. Revere your ancestors. Train with your mind. Strengthen the will. Center your energy. Focus on reality. Quest for higher excellence. Never misuse what you learn. Act with earnestness. Covet nothing. Subdue the "I". Behave with fortitude. Learn always. Assume nothing. Overcome fear with courage. Teach and grow. All students are expected to know and follow these tenets and precepts.
  16. A few observations: 1. I have studied several styles and have observed that percentage wise you will not see any more "low quality" black belts in TKD than any other style as it is relative to the numbers of participants. Every style has it's strengths and weakness. If you like your style-stay with it. 2. Students that feel they are not ready to test are usually the ones that are most successful at later levels. Humility is a quality that makes you much more teachable. 3. It is the instructors responsibility to make sure each student reaches his/her potential and you have to trust that they are doing the right thing....however, there are many out there that have no business teaching in the first place and if you are unlucky enough to have stumbled upon one of them you need to find another place to train. 4. Cultural differences aside, an instructor should be able to dialogue with students in an honest and compassionate way. If you are serious about changing schools check out many before making a decision.
  17. I use them frequently but do not have a set template either. Most of my stations focus on balance skills, gross motor movement, and hand-eye coordination. Some ideas: Jump over a belt or rope at varying heights Run across several boxing mitts place in the floor (we call them "rocks) Jump over kicking paddles set at varying distances Punch or kick through plastic rings Set up several cones and have them run from cone to cone-I use blue on one side and red on the other to help visual/motor patterning Shoulder rolls over blockers or a ball Kicking/punching combos on standing bag Jump kicking and blocking: an instructor wanders through the course or remains in one area and attacks them as they go by with a blocker or uses xray paper as a target
