  2. We adapt techniques for our personal strengths and weaknesses-we develop depth of understanding based on our own experiences and capacities, and thus the art becomes our personal "style". A good instructor should always encourage this and nurture each student in this way, a good student should remain teachable and not resist the way.
  3. I use a tiered grading system where students must earn stripes in order to be eligible to grade. If they fail stripe testing I speak with them on the spot and discuss the areas they need to improve in-stripe testing is done individually so that I can give them one-on-one attention and feedback. Students that earn all stripes and are eligible to grade rarely fail final testing but on the rare occasion they do I speak with the student privately or with a parent (minor) and begin by asking them how they thought their grading went-most serious students will know the outcome before you even tell them. After a discussion on their strong points and areas that need improvement we formulate a plan together to get them to the next grading.
  4. I wear Five-Fingers for everything and love them! They are great on the mat and off-but be careful of snagging a toe. They make different styles for different activities-I wear the KSO on the mat and for running, the Bikula-also for running , and the Trek for trail and work.

  6. My husband and I have trained together for more than 25 years. While we now both teach different arts, we continue to work on techniques and concepts together and we definitely have a unique bond because of it. We always get a chuckle over the many times the police arrived at our doorstep on a report of a domestic quarrel only for them to find us throwing each other around and sparring in the yard!!!

  8. This post was originally published as an article in a dedicated KarateForums.com Articles section, which is no longer online. After the section was closed, this article was most to the most appropriate forum in our community. A few years ago I was doing some investigating of a martial arts school that I was thinking of joining and when I "Googled" the style name, the first thing that popped up was a post on KF that made reference to it. The poster was a KF moderator (Laurie, a.k.a. PunchPressQueen75) that studied the style in another school in the association and we soon struck up a friendship that has lasted - we trained together, played together and moderated together for several years until she "bowed out" to pursue other interests in life. I thank her for talking me into joining the school (I now own my own school in that association) and for convincing the staff here at KF that I was worthy-in spite of my sometimes "opinionated and passionate" posts. I joined KF and I accepted a position on the staff here because I felt the shared passion of the members and I was able to talk about those things that were close to my heart and that have affected me deeply over the years - all without being scoffed at or put down. I have spent a lot of time training my mind and body and am honored that I can share my life experience with others in the hopes that they find some "treasure" in what I have to say... and I am also grateful to the many passionate and experienced members who drop a few nuggets for me! THANK YOU! KarateForums.com is by far the best martial arts forum that is out there - well run by an amazing administrator - Patrick - and well attended by some of the best... all over the world!   10. I wouldn't say that the length of belt tails means anything really. You can't judge someone's style or skill based on how long their belt is or what color gi they wear, etc. Preferences aside-it's just a belt and not a reflection of the content.

Warm Ups & Stretching: Consists of hand techniques, footwork, and old-fashioned exercising followed by stretching Basics:5-10 minutes hand work, stance work, kicking techniques, etc. Lesson Plan for the day: Covers at least 2 of our curriculum areas (Sparring Combinations, Sparring Techniques, Combat Tactics, Step Sparring, Self Defense, Forms, or Free Sparring) Cool Down-discussion of philosophy, Q & A, etc. Classes run 45 minutes to 60 minutes depending on level.
