  1. Speed is just part of the "expression of energy" that most experienced judges look for. Techniques must be executed properly and have volume/depth too.
  2. Yes, back kick is not a "spinning" kick-it must be delivered in a straight motion otherwise energy is wasted and poorly directed. I teach both a "mule" kick-like brickshooter describes-which is totally defensive.....and a more traditional kick where you look over your shoulder at the target and land your kicking foot in front keeping your momentum going towards the opponent. The key to both is keeping your body centered over your base leg and turning on a axis like you are kabob not a spinning top. Same principal applies to wheel kick (reverse round house, spinning hook kick, whatever you call it in your style).
  3. Without a code ( do-"the way") it's just fighting.
  4. Agreed-and I believe that more than one art can compliment another. In our system we have blended Tae Kwon Do, jujitsu, and arnis-taking aspects of each to compliment the core system.
  5. Why are you waiting until November? No amount of money is worth this kind of treatment....you might get your money back or not but you would keep your dignity.
  6. And, if done with dynamic resistance offers a cardio component as well!
  7. Strength, flexibility, low impact on joints. stress relief...all good reasons for martial artists to practice yoga!
  8. Welcome to KF-congrats on your family starting it's martial arts journey!
  9. I require parental approval in that they have been following the tenets and exhibiting good character at home and at school. I also test them on the philosophy we teach and require community service and leadership projects at certain levels to teach them to use what we are teaching out side the dojo too. Some of these requirements extend to the adult classes too and those who desire to take their Black Belt Test have a year of preparation work that does not involve kicking or punching.
  10. I agree with all you have presented here. It is a gesture of respect and honors those who receive it-no strings attached for me!
  11. Welcome to KF-looking forward to sharing ideas!
  12. Have you tried sitting stretches or some yoga stretches for the lower back and hips? I tell my students to stretch daily after a warm up or hot bath/shower and to concentrate on hamstrings as these are key to kicking.
  13. Sparring Tactics in colored belt classes, Step Sparring in Black Belt class- each week the Black Belts devote an entire class to one curriculum area...lots of fun!
