  1. I agree here-continued professional development is essential, whether in physical skills or otherwise. Seeking to improve ourselves sets the standard for our students-if we don't make an effort to grow why should they? There are associations and schools out there that welcome independent dojos without the political strings-teachers that are wiling to share their knowledge unfettered by ego and self imposed boundaries.....if you lead by the same example you will attract one another.
  2. It is expected of all students in our dojo. Giving value to others by clapping is a lesson in respect-treating people the way you want to be treated.
  3. I have found that most sincere martial artists will enter your school with an "aire" of mutual respect which can be seen by the way they carry themselves, place their hands, and introduce themselves, etc....you can't hide your training. Those that try to put on a show when they come in are usually not what they say they are....or are delusional.
  4. I got talked into joining a Judo class by a friend and fell in love! It was destiny-and here I am 37 years later still sharing the passion.
  5. If you are learning and/or teaching the philosophical aspects/martial code of martial arts training then you should strive to live it.
  6. I agree wholeheartedly!!! I tell my students that everything they need to know to pass their Black Belt test can be found in the "basics". I remember the final portion of my first dan test very well...it consisted of horse stance and punching at a pencil that Sensei moved around in front of me-the basics!
