  1. Darksoul, I agree, our style sounds as if it has a similar attitude to yours when it comes to breaking boards. I see the logic of it too, but the need in modern training - not so much.
  2. I'm not a stereotypical "Eye of the Tiger" trainee, but I love Rock music when I do Kihon and Kata, AC/DC is my favorite. Echos of the 80's I expect.
  3. I practice Shukokai too, it for example is a recent development into modern Karate. Based on a tradition that began in Okinawa and developed in Japan and the rest of the world. It has many traits similar to other styles, but noticeable differences that make the style what it is. Osu! Arigato!
  4. Teenagers can have 1st Dans in our style; but their test for 2nd Dan will take into account their age and the whole of the syllabus. I suppose they could acheive it in theory, but our Sensei are very keen that they earn it when they are ready. Some styles have board breaking as part of their gradings; we do not.
  5. I suppose it's the law of the jungle, told and retold, before, now and for ever. The defense of the inocent is an issue, but so is the responsibility of the strong to educate and guide the youth. The Wolves take care around the Sheepdogs, but many wear the Sheepdog collar themselves. Some choose to be Sheep, proclaiming their pacifism and apathy. I hope History doesn't repeat its self to thier demise.
  6. The argument on both sides of this debate is very strong. But as with many things; all I say is each to their own.
  7. A cause is what we all fight for, a worthy one is worth the effort. A popular figure can give an edge to publisize and make people take notice; so yes it is worth it.
  8. The most imressive thing was the sound of the stones when they were broken, a "Chudd" sound. I think they can tell the quality of the strike by the sound it makes. It was a good day.
  9. I cured that with my Wife BM, I got her to start Karate as well!
  10. I always remember a TV celeb called Carlol Vorderman gaining a 3rd class bachelor's degree, then after a popular following being presented with an Honory Phd at a top University! So what is it really worth? Good PR at best!
  11. To be honest, I don't have much experience of breaking boards. It's not a trait of Okinawan Karate, as taught today. I can appreciate it, it takes skill and technique when done in truth. We strike sheilds and pads mostly. I did witness the edging stone world braking attempt a few years ago, very impressive, the best breaker was a Tai Chi expert.
  12. You have a point, but I find it was part of his appeal. Some fighters today come out with abuse not wit.
  13. I agree, if you can cut the head off the beast, then you have a chance.
  14. That's true, his ability to ride blows and draw an attack gave him a distinct advantage. Body flexibility and a flowing posture melts to accomodate the opponent, and to defeat him.
  15. In Bushido, you look to overcome. If you die, it will be a great death a worthy one. You respect your opponent enough to make him give of his soul to defeat you.
  16. Welcome Jon, Wado Ryu is a solid style, enjoy, Osu!
  17. Rocky Marciano was a legend, but Ali had class.
  18. Power is generated by the spine, regulated by the hips and foot position. All styles to my knowledge do this to one degree or another.
  19. I was taught three Okinawan Kata, and trained the practical application by striking bean filled wall bags. I think my Nunchaku training has been worthwhile. It is not the main focus of my training, but very interesting.
  20. Yes, they make carbon or composite arrows, it just depends how much you want to spend, good luck!
  21. I agree with bushido_man, your supposed to enjoy your martial arts training.
  22. The most painfull of the techniques demonstrated on me are the nerve pressure points around the face and jaw. They are not pretty. I just need to know how they feel so I can apply them myself.
  23. Well done DQ, congratulations! Osu!
  24. To be truthfull, we don't train for a head height kick, though it is part of our Kihon for higher grades. Only rarely does it appear in our Kata, there is a jumping reverse cresent kick in Sepai Kata for example. I admire the styles that have these kicks as their focus, but I have only trained in them regularly in my youth.
  25. It's just your body telling to stop!!
