Shotokan techniques taught that aren't allowed in kumite

I totally Agree with this after a bit of thought. Fighters choose these techniques because they are so devastating, and at time choose their lack of control. I have seen the look in a fighter's eye when he lands a stopper, it's triumph not respect.. -
Tips for better stamina / a good cardio workout
Harkon72 replied to ossemon's topic in Health and Fitness
Running can be bad for your joints, knees and hips. A good rowing machine cannot be beaten for stamina training. Start with three sets of 30 reps, untill you can do 100 without a break. Then do 100 twice a day with a day rest in between. Works for me! -

In some styles such as Lau Gar, ridge hands are allowed but knife hands are not taught. So I suppose it is horses for courses. -
Over the Year I want to lose 1.5 stone and get my 3rd Kyu before Christmas. I would like to land a double figure Bass and Pass my exams at collage in June.

Shotokan techniques taught that aren't allowed in kumite
Harkon72 replied to bakatenshidna's topic in Karate
I remember a club where each beginner was taught so called "respect" by breaking them in a sparring session with a Dan grade. The Sensei was in court last November for verbal abuse and threatening behavior. In my time as a Martial Artist I have seen the good, the bad and the very ugly. I am lucky now to be part of a real Martial Art school run by real martial artists. I think bullies eventually get what's coming to them; it's a Natural Law. Success in martial arts takes consistent hard work. You try, you fail and you try again. There is no shame in going down, only in staying down. -

I see Zaine's point, I can concur that any human can slip up and catch you. Walking into an axe kick at full tilt would put you in an ambulance. -
I had my initial fitness assessment test toady. I can just believe how unfit I am. I have had little training in three months. I did only two pull ups, holiday porky belly to blame for that. I did 27 pushups in 2 minutes. I did 80 situps in 2 minutes. I jogged 2 miles in 15 minutes. And my flexibility is better than average for a re-starter. My Sensei has warned me not to over do it, also I think I will dust off that rowing machine, low impact cardio is what I need at my weight. Target is to lose 1.5 stone in a year. I feel a little embarrassed, but it's a start.

We have banned techniques too such as axe kicks and spinning elbows. They are so for a reason, they are difficult to control and very damaging. -
It took me 8 years to get to Shodan in Shorin Ryu, then another 4 to get to Nidan. I hold a 3rd kyu in the Shotokan style and a 6th kyu in Shukokai.

Our Sensei teaches us our karate based on the bunkai of the Kata. So if what you say is true, we are very lucky.

My left knee is giving me jip, I think it's the cold, I'll warm it up with Tiger Balm before my run tomorrow.

Good style for a 5 year old?
Harkon72 replied to mips's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Judo is a good style for Children, it has no strikes and it is relatively safe in the hands of a good teacher. -
Shotokan is Kaiokoshin's parent style. Same as our style Shukokai developed from Shito Ryu.

I can advocate cross-training, I found Ju Jutsu and Wing Chun greatly added flavor to my Karate.
-
I can understand, I was a Shotokan 4th Kyu for 3 years, I just enjoyed the Karate.

Mick gave me a copy of the training program as a Christmas gift! The "Bast*rds" exercise looks interesting, 40 of those a day and I should be well on my way. Diet, stretching, hydration and a good interval running program starts this weekend. I go for my Medical tomorrow!
