most MT fighter DO do swing their arm down/back when they throw one because it makes more power. It's proabably ok in a ring but in the street i would keep my hands up incase another opponet came into play...thats what we are taught in KM. -
Muay Thai vs other stlyes.
TJS replied to TJS's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Do you have a site with information on the Akido vs MT matches? I really would like to Read about it. Also I dont belive MT is the best art per say but i do belive it is the most effective standup fighting style. -
Shadow boxing is basically like fighting an oppont that isint there, best if done in a mirror...good for technique, Speed, etc I belive it's alot more effective. and I bet most of the top fighters in The world today in MMA/K-1/Kickboxing etc would agree with me. look at what they do, and how they train, do they do Katas?

I would prefer to shadow box any day of the week.

no one thinks this would be an important thing to learn for a fight?

or you could just kick a bag.. -
This is a VERY good site, with a lot of good information on Muay Thai and it's confrenatations with other stlyes/fighters. I think some People need to realize MT fighter have continously PROVEN their Stlye's effectiveness throught the 1900's. For the record I dont do MT but I respect it soo much Because they are constantly Willing to fight ANYONE, And test themselvs and their stlye. There are so many claims floating around the world from various stlyes/schools, and I respect them for actually putting theirs to the test against the best of the best. so many people are affraid to do this. Anyways I really encourage everyone to read the whole thing, I know it's long but it's got ALOT of good information. http://members.aol.com/Thaiboxing2000/muay.html

I would have to Disagree about it being the most street effective.
-
Well I dont know much about it, I belive it is Similar to Kyokoshin Karate, whitch is a pretty tought standup fighting style. It really comes down to how you train, I think Contact Sparring means alot, as in non Tag/point sparring.
-
MT fighter, Krav Maga is actually pretty similar to MT in it's standup fighting, We use the round kick with the shins, Teep kick, Generally foucsing on the legs or mid section, lots of kness and elbows from the clinch. MT is a badass standup Fighitng stlye, Hardocore. I would reccomend Krav Maga though, if you are looking for self defense. It has things like Defenses/counter attacks for headlocks/chokes/holds etc..plus things like weapon defenses, takedown defenses, groundfighting etc. It's tought training though. not an easy ride, but you will love it. https://www.KravMaga.com has some more info on it.

Thats rediculous. I belive MT is One of the most effective standup fighting styles in the world. but to mkae a blanket statment like that is simply wrong. Under what? MT rules? Gerard Gordau MT, so did several otehr people in the early UFC's. BJJ/Wrestler all have a good chance at beating one, and they have. Standup fighting MT is usually dominate but there are other effective styles. San Shao, Kyokoshin, KM, Burmese boxing etc. you cant say a MT fight will ALWAYS win.

Does anyone do TKD for self defense then..?

Mas Oyama Helio Gracie Royce gracie Imi

So no one has ever been taught to fight at a range other than kicking punching range?
-
Mentally prepeare, that was the most important thing for me in my first fight. Stay Calm, but be confident and try not to think too much. Listen to a song that pumps you p right before the fight...Dont fear you opponet..dont think "what is he going ot do to me" make him worry about what you are going to do to him. also i dont think askinf for advice means someone is not prepared.
-
Has anyone ever worked on this in a TKD school? I mean/knees/elbow/strikes etc from the clinch and takedowns/takedown defenses from the clinch?
-
I Included San da....Isint San Shao Ameature San da..or is it the other way around..either way it's on my list.

Different Martial Arts available in your area
TJS replied to Big Game's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Karate Kenpo Tae Kwon do Kung Fu-several kinds Muay thai Krav Maga Kickboxing Wing chun Boxing Akido judo BJJ Kook sool won Hapkido Tai chi several mma schools. Just off the top of my head. There are several of most of them also. -
Thats would be nice, and sounds good and all but it's not the case. for example many popular stlyes dont have groundfighting, there is no way it is complete wihout that. TKD for example realy only focuses on one range of the fight..very little clinch fighting and no ground fighting. This is true of many stlyes I just used TKD as an example. At the same time I dont think BJJ is a complete style by itself for obvvious reasons. Very few systems are complete, you are fooling yourself to think they are.
