  1. I have 2 pairs of Nunchakus, a light and a heavy pair. In my Dojo we don't practice weapons at all, however I do wish to train with them and I am considering to do Heian Yondan with Nunchakus. Just waiting for my Dojo to open from holidays so that I finally get back to class and be taught this Kata.
  2. A better version of this would be Rocky Balboa, Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in their prime. Rocky would tank it, Lee would make it dizzy and Norris would land the famous roundhouse kick to end the fight!
  3. Maybe he is majoring in computer games then his claims would make sense!
  4. Drinking reasonable quantity of water or isotonic drink in the middle of training sure helps a lot but its up to the instructor to give permission. In my dojo we are not allowed to drink unless we are given permission. If we ask for permission to drink water we get push ups instead! Only on very hot summer 1.5hour sessions our sensei did set us drink water as far as I remember..!
  5. Head instructor = Sensei Assistant instructor/other blackbelts = Sempai Greeting = Oss or Osu Thank you (after sparring) = again Oss or Osu! (always bowing)
  6. New Karate Kid movie is filmed in China and has nothing but Kung Fu inside. If I was Kancho Kanazawa I would definitely sue their 'rear-end' all the way back to Okinawa!
  7. I'm sure it was anxiety crippling the effort. Quite normal happening on lower kyu grades. Let yourself loose and focus on your techniques rather than the people watching you!
  8. I agree that everyone around me has played a role in my MA journey. Starting from the inspiration I get from my Sensei, the enthousiasm from my classmates, the flexible work schedule from my employer and my wellness advisor for the excellent nutrition he introduced to me. I do thank them for all that. My parents never really inspired me towards Karate. They signed me up when I was 9-10 y.o but then stopped me for some worthless reason. Looking back on this I wish I never stopped! However I did find the urge to come back many years later when 28y.o. I dunno who to thank for that enlightnent!
  9. Studying shotokan in Greece we speak Greek ofc but when stepping in the dojo all the Japanese terminology is used. My sensei has even made a poster of him performing all techniques with small pictures and the name of each one underneath. Very cool to watch while waiting outside the class. Like Shizentai wrote it is the international language that we learn. In my first Karate seminar this June that we had 2 senseis from Italy instructing my class and even though I don't know any Italian I had no problem communicating with them. Body language and Japanese/Okinawan terminology is the only thing you need to practice Karate with anyone in the world.
  10. Your club must be affiliated to one of the popular world karate federations and they provide you with a "licence" that needs renewal every year that notes inside your current kyu/dan grade and personal info.
  11. looking for the KF grading syllabus for all grades!!

  13. 28/7 morning 15mins of dynamic streches 15mins of static streches 15mins practice of hand techniques from a low kimba dachi stance 15mins of abs crunches and push ups to finish up
  14. Is there any kind of spiritual practice that doesn't involve some level of blunt force trauma? If anyone says "yes", I'll call shinannigans. That sounds nasty indeed..!
  15. Kenko ('Health' in Japanese) is the name of my shotokan karate club and my Sensei is Nikitas Zarouchliotis 7th Dan SKIF.
  16. welcome enjoy your stay.
  17. To maximize the effect of your Karate training you need to complement it with a healthy diet. People involved in athletic activities are getting a lot of oxidants build up in their bodies so you need to be eating plenty of anti-oxidant foods. Just google ''anti-oxidants'' and find out what you like best. Apart from that u need a good mix of proteins, calcium and carbohydrates. The amount required depends on factors like your height, your weight, your age and your body type (small, medium or large). I'd recommend seeking specific advice from a nutrion expert to measure you in one of these fancy digital scales like 'Tanita' and show you exactly where you stand and what u need to improve in your body.
  18. I was in the same situation cuz of a light injury on the knee I had surgery 2 years ago and I was getting nuts about my absense from training. Despite this I took 2 weeks out until I was ok and then resumed training without fear. Your health is above everything and if its not possible to continue training in a different way that protects your injury then u should stop until it heals completely. Besides your MA carreer is a life long journey. Don't worry about absense so much. All sports include injuries and martial arts especially.
  19. I have a pair of heavy wooden nunchakus and did some minimal practice with them and I can confirm they can be quite damaging if used in assault/sd situations. I would choose these over any knife or stick. It depends on the type of nunchakus really. Most of the ones sold in martial art shops are for practice, shows and exhibitions.
  20. The only thing i managed to find just using the internet is this: http://www.uhisa.org.uk/content/769183/clubs__societies/uhi_karate_club/ Its a Karate Society Club from Inverness University and their base is like 2h drive from Inverness...
  21. Deep Stances are emphasized for beginners as a mean of obtaining good form in addition to building up your leg muscles. Its commonly known in Karate that when fighting/sparring the Karateka stands naturally. Quoting Master Funakoshi's 17th Precept of Karate:
  22. Welcome enjoy your stay.
  23. We have it like this: Coloured belts (8th to 4th kyu) gradings every 3 months. Brown belt (3rd 2nd and 1st kyu) gradings every 6 months. Effectively 3 grading times per year excluding Dan examinations that coincide with Karate seminar dates. (usually in July) Dojo is closed for July and August. So if u never fail a grading u should be reaching an adult Shodan rank in 3-3.5 years.
  24. welcome to the forums. It would be useful if u could find the syllabus they are using for teaching classes of all kyu grades and dans. If the Dojo is affiliated with any of the big karate Federations like JKA, SKIF, ISKF, IJKA etc then they should have a certain standards to their training. Where are you located by the way?
  25. Man i wish we did that much kumite... Only in the examinations of 2nd Dan and higher they do Jiyu Kumite in my system, but only 2-3 fight that last max 3 minutes. Without any protection of course but still the small number of fights leaves much to be desired. All other lower grades from Shodan down to 5th Kyu we do Jiyu Ippon Kumite. Good for practice and training but not good for exams that should take the test requirements up a notch.
