  1. Bruce Lee is only valid cause he survived a Roundhouse Kick from Chuck Norris. Or didn't he? Bruce Lee 27 November 1940 – 20 July 1973[R.I.P] Chuck Norris March 10, 1940 - Still alive 'n' kicking...
  2. Unless you are lucky to find a kyokushin dojo that doesn't train according to tournament rules and uses headgear. If I remember well, evergrey's dojo is like that. I'm so jealous really. All the kyokushin dojos in my city are fighting according to tourney rules with only kicks allowed to the head, allowed... but with control and no headgear at all.
  3. Since you have covered all the basics in your Shodan rank then you can train yourself up to a reasonably advanced standard with the aid of shotokan dvds and books. However finding a shotokan partner for sparring would be the ideal thing. But he/she must be 3rd kyu or higher.
  4. From my POV, Bunkai is just a tool my Sensei is using to explain all those 'weird' techniques we are forced to learn and perform. I have no idea if I will ever use it for Free Sparring or Self Defence after mastering those. I am always sceptical about many techniques we learn, for the reason ShoriKid described. All Bunkai demonstrations start from telegraphed, "karate" style attacks waiting for the kata performer to turn and defend.
  5. This is what OSU is all about in its actual translation. 'Endure under Pressure' However in Kyokushin it should be 'Endure under Pain' to make it real! Meaning of OSU: http://www.uskl.org/osu.cfm
  6. interesting! this can open totally new opportunities. go for it!
  7. A similar article posted in https://www.theshotokanway.com by Aaron Hoopes. link below: http://www.theshotokanway.com/zenmindvigilantbody.html enjoy!
  8. Looks like you're in my shoes too! A while ago I was also thinking to switch to Kyokushin in order to get more sparring experience but I'm only 6th Kyu while you are at the level where things start getting interesting meaning ofc Jiyu Kumite (free sparring). I stayed in Shotokan cuz my dojo is very close to my place while all the kyokushin dojos are very far away. Distance is a major factor with my work schedule. Also I have dedicated 1+ year in it (including seminars etc) I don't feel like quitting since I love my school and the people there even though I would like to see more from my training. In Shotokan, patience is a virtue for sure but to hell with that I'm getting a heavy bag this Xmas or I'll go nuts!
  9. hmmm yeah excuse my engrish that's what i meant (2 handed use).
  10. The game ''Mount and Blade'' that is built upon very realistic medieval weapon properties and features, has the B'stard Sword swing slower than a one handed blade but can be dual wielded anytime giving out substantially more damage making it one of the favoring dueling swords among swordmasters. Especially a well balanced B'stard Sword its the best of both worlds when comparing one handed vs two handed blades.
  11. For those of us not in a Japanese style, or not Japanese, English terminology would be great here... oi tzuki = stepping punch (or lunge punch) gyaku zuki = reverse punch gedan mawashi geri = front roundhouse kick aimed lower than waist ushiromawashi uraken = backwards circular backfist uchi momo geri = ???
  12. Welcome enjoy your stay. I'd suggest visiting the Articles section, you will find lots of excellent reads regarding Martial Arts. Cya at the boards.
  13. Where do i sign up for a decent beating??! So far the only time we have semi-contact is if my 2 step sparring partner momentarily loses control of his counterattack. I then smile on him and tell him 'play ball dude' but he is so afraid to keep it going...! Jesus i need a heavy bag or smth...
  14. Is 1 month of training really that much important that they can't bend the rules and let u grade even if they say you are ready? Are they afraid you will quit after shodan maybe? Cuz many people do after getting BB. Imho they should let you grade and if u pass to wear your BB 1 month later if it matters that much. I understand your frustration and I would feel the same way if not worse!
  15. I guess it all depends on the quality of soy. If we are talking about non mutated pure organic samples then they can't be harmful in any way. There are many people I know that include high quality soy proteins in their regular nutrition and they never had any problems. Whey is the new 'trend' and a bit pricier than soy where the difference is very little compared to the nutritional value reported by nutritional analysis. Again I would emphasize on quality myself. I plan to change to whey concentrate when I finish my soy supplies and see for myself. Anyone considered using both? Since they are different types of protein (organic vs animal) you may get the best of both worlds.
  16. Wonderful rainbow belt Harkon! Grats m8, well done.
  17. So which of you are getting a protein shake immediately after the end of your training session? Some people swear by a 30min window that you must give high quality proteins to your muscles after workout in order to develop decent muscle mass. Which protein are you in favor of? Soy, whey or egg? I am currently using Soy because of its high overall characteristics that emphasize on body recovery along with muscle mass build up without the need for supplements like when using whey protein which is slightly better for muscle mass.
  18. Do not forget the most important thing before AND after training. Nutrition. Get a protein shake and a good supply of anti-oxidants to help you build up your muscle mass for power and endurance.
  19. Wow... I can't believe I'm reading that. In your first day they put you through full contact sparring when they knew u had no MA experience! You should have stayed there and finish them up one by one! They said: ''Leave and don't come back...'' You should have answered: ''Make me!'' Damn... u should go to that other infamous MMA forum (that we are not allowed to mention here) and post your experience and name the club and instructor so that everyone knows what's going on in that dojo. I have heard a similar experience from a girl friend of mine when she took her first TKD lesson they hit her in the stomach so hard (with protective gear on) that she couldn't continue the lesson and she never came back after this.
  20. welcome enjoy your stay.
  21. God i wish we free sparred at my Dojo...
  22. Happy birthday I wish u all the best.
  23. If it makes it any better i'm also on rotating shifts and some weeks i can only train once or not at all. In addition i don't have decent space for solo training in my apartment so you are in much better odds there. 40 Acres is wow...
  24. Excellent read thanks for sharing.
  25. I'm kind of confused by this. I don't think Karate's techniques has any inability to counter these other styles. I don't think it has to do with that. I think it has more to do with the training methodologies. Let me elaborate: In traditional Shotokan, the kamae (fighting stance) is with hands on the abdomen height. In any confrontation with a decent kick boxer/muai thai fighter would get you destroyed very fast using this archaic fighting stance. The prevalent use of linear punches makes for a lack of an effective toolset needed to fight a trained fighter. Mawashi zuki aka hook punch is one of the rarest techniques in traditional shotokan while in other combative MAs its one of the prevalent. The SKIF curriculum is very strict to the techniques taught per grade so we are missing effective ones that are excluded. Finally the shotokan karateka needs to reach shodan or nidan in order to do free sparring and that includes examination sparring. (Again talking about the SKIF curriculum)
