  1. If you are paired up with someone who is alot more skilled than you there is not much you can do. I would suggest that you just stick to your gameplan and try to make it work in the situation. It is very important not to let them control the fight, if you put them on the back foot early they may be a bit more hesitant in their future attacks.
  2. Do you taper your training away has you get closer to the fight so you can go into the fight fresh?
  3. Of course, i just thought i would mention the applications because you wouldnt want to forget them after putting in all the hard work that you mentioned.
  4. 1. Control the fights so your opponents are always on the back-foot. This means fighting how YOU want, not letting your opponent dictate the fight. 2. The rounds arnt that long, so if you are fit go all out from the beginning. 3. Regarding strengths and weaknesses of your opponents, dont focus on that 2 much. If you are controlling the fight the only thing you will need to consider is YOUR strengths and weaknesses(you should know what they are. Use your strengths and protect your weaknesses.)
  5. If you follow Jussi Häkkinen's advice you will certainly have an excillent grasp of the kata, but dont stop there. Next work on the applications of the techniques until it all becomes instinct.
  6. HA! Making fun of jocks is hilarious.
  7. The people you see in the UFC are highly trained athletes(obviously) and the training they do is specific to the type of environment they fight in. Dont get me wrong, any of them could put you into a world of pain rather quickly, but the way they train is not the only way. Maybe not in the ufc, but other styles of martial arts have alot to offer in terms of self-defence, self-improvement etc etc. This question has been asked many times before and the usual answer goes something like this: The martial art that will work is the one you spend enough time practicing to become proficient at. It all takes time, no matter what style you choose.
  8. One of the main problems with fighting a capoiera master would be(this may have been mentioned already) there "awkward" style. I imagine it would be extremely difficult to predict their movements and actually hit them considering they have their body going all over the place.
  9. Didnt you just say that you spar without head contact?? By your reasoning you are setting yourself up for failure by doing that.
  10. This is very true. I think another problem your instructor might have is if you are being shown a technique and you say "nah that wont work, at the other place where i learn they tell us to do it this way".
  11. I would be very surprised if the concept of osae isnt already apart of almost all martial arts. Forward momentum and projecting your "intent" forward seem to be a fairly common idea in most peoples training. I guess some have not been shown this though.
  12. I have had some people ask me "what would you do if i did this" like they thing i have some pre-determined sequence of techniques to deal with every type of attack.
  13. Im pretty sure he means knee strikes. i.e. knee to the face. You potentially leave yourself open to guillotine chokes and knees to the head if they sprawl effectively.
  14. We wear gloves not so we can be boxers, its to help prevent injuries that will stop us from training.
  15. Thats great advice. Also, if there is something you want to work on in training keep practicing it until it becomes reflex and then slowly build on your skills from there.
  16. I wear them most of the time. If i want to work on the specifics of a technique i wont use gloves, but when im really going for it on the bag i use gloves.
  17. After quiet a bit of research, discussion and practice, i now realise that the boxing guard is not the only position that can be used in a self defence situation. The position i use varies at times, but generally it stays in the boxing position. I apologize if my opinions came across in a narrow minded manner earlier.
  18. That advice holds true no matter who you are fighting, if they know what they are doing you will get hit. Who is this "SHOTOKAN" guy???????
  19. Its not so good when the other guy is throwing strikes to your face(which is most likely what you will come across in a fight). When talking about defending against shoots and takedowns the hand would probably still be in a better position to act if its kept up near the face, because if your trying to take me down i want to control your head meaning you will probably run straight into my forearm and i can control the head from there. Thankyou for that information.
  20. The thing is, the guard doesnt "drop" the hands stay at the same height and the forearms and elbows protect against your blast to the solarplexus.
  21. That MIGHT work, but it will most likely get your leg slashed.
  22. cross

    Goju class?

Bunkai is the application of the movements in kata..... i.e. how the technique would actually be used in self defence.
  23. I would much rather a stick if i was facing someone with a knife. With the stick you can attack and they will still be out of range to cut you.
  24. Do you also tell them they should keep their head covered?
  25. Its certainly not something i would try, but each to his own.
