Where specifically is your knee pain Slim? I have had numerous serious injuries to my kness mostly from when I played football. Something about getting helmets in the knee, that doesn't go over too well..

Hey maybe you guys should take some video and post the clips if you can.... That would be cool

Just curious what the rules for kumite are for you guys...

I think Karateka is refering to people just opening a "kickboxing" school, who are not really qualified to teach. Boxing has had similar problems. Anyone can train a boxer, and send them out into the world, even if they have never fought a round in their life or been taught properly. Because there is big bucks in boxing some guys think they can throw bodies into the ring, and maybe get lucky with someone with natural fight talent. The same thing is happening with kickboxing. I don't think Karateka was saying all "Kickboxers" are wanna be's.

I've heard this all before...The Chinese San Shou training camp bit is new, and I'd like to know who and where instead of such a general statement (or basically I think you've got a big shovel). To think that low kicks have just come into the picture is comical. You call them thai kicks because of your realm of knowledge. "Thai's rarely lost..." there is contradicting stories out there...and I myself have beaten Thai fighters playing by their rules...but in the scheme of things this means Jack...I'm sure a good skilled Karateka or Tae Kwon Do guy could beat a Thai boxer or visa versa. As for the shorts it's a silly point...who cares what you wear... I wear shorts when I compete, but no thai writting on them only chinese... And just for the record San Shou never uses pads except in amatuer bouts.

Maybe "expert" is too much, but I was trying to illustrate that a show or brief involvement makes it ridiculous to make statements like "San Shou people were doing mostly side kicks" and then say Muay Thai changed that. I have been in martial arts actively for over 16 years, I have competed in San Shou and Muay Thai events (even though I am not a Thai boxer)... comments like "dominance", and so forth have nothing to do with the issue at hand. I didn't even bring San Shou onto the table, I stated the style appeared to be influenced by kempo and judo...and the site made no mention of muay thai as suggested by an earlier post; however, I know Ken likes to argue. Ken Stated:"I guess it's a nationalistic pride thing that keeps these other systems from admitting the Thai influence of their martial art systems" Seem to be Ken's agenda for everything...that Thai is the best and everyone copies it... Trust me and read my earlier posts I have a good understanding of Thai Boxing, and I know what has to be done to beat the style in the ring...and it's not emulating their techniques... Good luck in your search SubmissionFighter

Who said anything about fake...your funny Ken... I suppose if you saw a documentary on Bill Gates you could run Microsoft too...just like you could work for the poilce by watching COPS...point being watching a show hardly makes you an expert. I see now it wasn't a San Shou tournament at the Shaolin Temple...it was Chung Le... [ This Message was edited by: Iron Arahat on 2001-09-14 22:01 ]

Opinions based on observation is more accurate... Watching the discovery channel, hardly gives you a base of what San Shou is or isn't for that matter. "Other systems that have adapted Muay Thai technique are Shotokan, Seidokaikan and San Shou, just to name a few." --an assessment from observations on the discovery channel? As I said before North Americans typically have a poor understanding of Chinese martial arts...

$1000 a day plus expenses....hello commercialism. Go train in Thailand for less... "...the dominance of Muay Thai in the Ring..." "...San Shou people were doing mostly side-kicks..." I'm pretty confident you have never seen a San Shou bout Ken, and are basing things on a North American experience. Yes, Muay Thai has gained popularity in NA in the past decade, and yes in NA there are people have been influenced by Thai boxing. The above statement leads me to believe that you have never seen a San Shou fight...and taking opinions from other posts. However, in Asia most arts were influenced by the Chinese. Also contrary to popular belief Chinese systems are typically "complete" involving all ranges from standing to the ground, and weapons training. Many systems are just small segment of chinese arts. So as I said it's a "chicken-egg" argument. Based on opinion...not "Ken facts".

Gloves are designed to dispurse the force of impact...a disadvantage for an "iron" fighter to wear. Wearing boxing gloves is a disadvantage to almost any non-ring fighter. Paulson could'nt beat McNeely in my eyes... he's to busy promoting his seminars, and talking about shooto, as that's all he ever really won anything in. Cung Le in Gong would be an interesting match; however, in NHB competition I think Gong would get schooled. Straight stand up who knows... -
We had a minute of silence at 10:00am yesterday. I feel for the victims in their families. Also especially for all the fire department and law enforment personnel. May you rest in peace my fallen brothers and sisters. You will greatly missed by the communities that you served. Your bravery, honour, and your heart will never be forgotten.

The statement was made that I had met him in 1997 at the San Shou Nationals...he was not fighting the man has to be at least 50 years old. I would'nt say fighting with gloves is "equal terms" especially for someone who has conditioned his hands to the extent of Master Pan. I'd like to see Cung Le fight Alex Gong.... And possibly Erik Paulson fight Peter McNeely... -

I've seen Paulson's advertisment, for costly seminars. In WCC he was Jun Fan, now he's greco-roman, machado jujitsu, judo, freestyle, sambo, I'm sure there might be the kitchen sink in there as well. I think alot of these guys tend to be jacks-of-all-trades, rather than good and effective. The link to his fight info Paulson has been posted in this thread for all to see. If I were a betting man I would want to have a better than 60% chance. Even so outside of Shooto he has won a huge 33% of his fights. Impressive. -
Go check out the info at the site SubmissionFighter, go watch a class, and see if it is what you want. You be the judge. It's not what other people think is good, that matters. Ever style has strengths, and also has weaknesses. It's good to see that you have found what you want to do now Angus. Say this influenced that, is just a "chicken egg" argument, based on opinions.

A quote from http://www.erikpaulson.com "For the last twenty-two years, Erik Paulson has studied the art of grappling. Having gained worldwide fame competing in many pay-per-view, no-holds-barred tournaments, he is now undefeated in Japan where he is the World Light-Heavyweight Shootwrestling Champion" A flat out false statement. Well maybe the fame part is true...I saw him on pay-per-view being a punching bag for Warring. Ken stated: "Fact... Erik Paulson was light-heavyweight Shooto champion of Japan for 5 years." I don't think 11-7-1994 to 8-27-1997 is five years. It's not even three. I know you are sticking up for him Ken because he trained with Insanto...but face the facts he is a 60% fighter right now...In fact he is only a 50% fighter since Warring. -

I don't think anyone is saying Paulson is not good because he is American (or doesn't have an accent). I'm saying: 1) Fact: Paulson does not have a five-year undefeated record. 2) Fact: Paulson is not the top ranked Shooto fighter in his class. 3) Fact: Paulson has only won 60% of his fights. Iron's opinion on Paulson (supported by the above facts): "Anyone who is a 60% fighter is by no means one of the better fighters in the world." I think Master Pan would be hard pressed at his age to enter any full contact event; however, if he was Paulson's age I'm sure he could have grabbed a fist full of hair and beaten the 60% fighter Paulson is. -

Start running...star skipping (3 minutes - 1minute rest - to emulate rounds). SAtart working out with a heavy bag if you have one... shadow box (3 minute rounds)... Plyometrics 1) Jumping over a pylon - front back side to side 2) Push-ups (explosive) - launch your body off the ground 3) Sit-ups - Crunches 4) Squat-Jumps (Squat down expode in the air) Besides the thai treaining itself, anything that promotes explosive power and endurance.
