Situational Training
gheinisch replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Wow! That warranty even covers damage during a karate class. Lazyboy will be my next recliner. Our Hanshi encourages us to come to class with scenerios to work on. He used to do a lot of bouncing and body guarding and reminds us all the time that no two situations are the same. In the real world you never know whats coming at you and from what direction. We also work on awareness a lot. We had a visiting Sensei come in from Florida one time and he talked about it as well. He had never been to our class before but could tell you how many chairs, receptacles and lights were in the room as well as how many exits out of the room there were. Back to the different senerios, we do one drill where we make two lines and someone has to walk down the middle of it. The students in the line can grab you from the front, side or back and more then one may grab you at the same time. It's up to the student walking the gauntlet to defend themselves in any way they want with strikes, locks, take downs(within reason of course) etc.. It's a great way to work on your reaction time which can mean life or death in the real world when fractions of seconds may be all you have. Great Topic! -

Hello Ted Great to have on board!

I have a middle weight Gi from Century that has held up real well. The pants have elastic as well as the ties. They also have the traditional pants with just the ties. The Gi's from Century are not the highest quality out there but the price is right and like I said mine has held up well. Greg

Request for prayer from Christian Martial Artists..
gheinisch replied to Sasori_Te's topic in General Chat
Consider it done. I'll bring it up in our class as well so we can all pray for him and his family to be strong during these trying times. -
Good Luck to the Astros. I'm 30 mi. south of Atlanta so I'm a big Braves fan, so I'm used to being disappointed. 13 yrs division titles in a row and only one World Series to show for it. I hated to hear the news about Ken Caminiti today, he was a good player for both teams. Hope your team continues to do well!

A great idea! Our school is the U.S. Academy of Martial Arts and we have been around for six years. Our Hanshi felt a calling as well. He had been out of teaching for a few years and started the school by simply putting a note in the Sunday bulletin. He doesn't charge anything for teaching and has actually spent his own money on epuipment and supplies. We as students help with buying stuff when we know in advance but he never asks us to do so. You didn't mention if you guys charge a fee or not. People can be more willing to try something for free. We have a large church as well and had a large number of students to show up on the first night. Of course some didn't come back and some will and have dropped out over the years. But new students come all the time and we now hold classes three times a week. One of those days are for the three of us who are getting close to black belt to work one on one with Hanshi. Do the leaders of your church approve or disapprove of your efforts? Ours were a little apprehensive before Hanshi explained to them what he wanted to do. It has been a great tool for getting some of the young kids into church and teaching them the word of God as well as self defence, confidence and attitude. One thing you may want to consider is limiting the age of the kids who are allowed to attend class. You must be at least 12 to participate in ours. We have other support groups going on at the same time as our class and didn't want our class to become a drop off point for parents while they went to others classes. We have a Martial Arts link on the churches web site if you want to check it out for some ideas on how we combine Martial Arts and Christianity. http://www.crossroadsnewnan.org/default.asp Click on the Martial Arts link on the left. Good luck with your efforts and I hope you guys are successful. God Bless, Greg

Forget the dojo, I want to be in that full contact Choir class with Miss B. No wonder you took up Martial Arts SS. You had to defend yourself against Miss B.
