  1. As with many things in life. It's ok to make them wait and for this to symbolize a right of passage into adulthood. This would insure more quality control as well.
  2. Happy birthday! (frosty the snowman voice)
  3. My advice is to always go into the school meet the instructors and students and look for the things that ou are looking for and make a decision then. Try a class.
  4. First off, Hilarious! A few of these erk me as well. 1. Done 2. True 3. Depends on where you go. 4. Yes and buy some biz your gi is yellow 5. ?? lol 6. I wouldn't say they aren't legit but if competing is your goal then you may want to find someone who has been there and done that. 7. People still talk about Royce????? 8. There is a standard but not everyone follows the rules.
  5. I'm pretty sure you can't sue the guy for trying to defend yourself with what he taught and you not being successful.
  6. I will say this, the old boy is fast. And if he has that type of commitment he will either come out with some minor wounds or end up in the ER or dead with the other guy. As far as being deadly, my uncle lived in Mexican town in Detroit and was stabbed 9 times on 7 occasions in his own yard before moving away. As many people are stabbed and shot to death, there are countless others who survive both. The statistics would be interesting to see.
  7. One of my favorite quotes to motivate my students is " Do you want a cupcake or a hott chic? Let's go!"
  8. I am all about it! The journey to BB was all the fun. The moment I got it was emotional and yet fleeting. I learn every single day and continue to expand my knowledge of BJJ to pass on to my students. But there is a part of my life behind me. The journey was a wonderful experience and one I will forever relive in my memories of it. It is different now. The goals and journey less obvious now as BB seems to be the finish line and it isn't. It is a huge responsibility. People are in a hurry to get here, which is foolish to me. I have more to represent and uphold than ever before. To me all belts before were like my teen years, in the way of what is expected of you and required. Now it's like i'm an adult so to speak within my world of BJJ. I don't know if any of this is making sense or if anyone can see this through my eyes. lol I guess it's like they tell children... Don't be in a hurry to grow up.
  9. I wasn't directing it to anyone. But looking at it again I didn't mean to be offensive if thats how it came across. It's just I visit as many martial arts schools as possible and talk business with them all regardless of style and the root of JBB's is the same. Retention and money. There is a trend in BJJ with this now too. I just refuse to comply with what seems to be good business. Me being idealistic may be detrimental to my business. I hope not.
  10. I feel that the beard is an integral part of my face; its absence would make it so that it is not my face any longer, but an "altered" one. I agree with this on many levels. I also can see in a Buddhist sort of way the flip side. To to the world as we know it and see it and recognize it. This is my face.
  11. Sensei8 I completely see your point... However I will never give a child a BB. They are not even eligible till nineteen. You described the very reasons that children shouldn't have BB's. Besides the hierarchy and the fact that you couldn't defend yourself against adults are very real facts children should understand. Anyone for that matter. Our belt system makes my kids and young adults looking forward. You can't just drive a car because you can pass the drivers exam at 11. The are age limits in politics as well. All for good reason. At 19 when my fifteen year old green belt is ELIGIBLE for his BB, just think of how proud he'll be and knowing he worked hard for his right of passage and is old enough to just be. Giving a child a black belt early gives them all types of misconceptions. I have been brought in by other schools to do camps and have met 8 year old TKD BB's. And they are seriously confused. No BB no confusion. They also start to see themselves as being above their adult counterparts. This is just silly to me. BB's where never given to kids because they deserve it. These curriculum's were designed to make money. And schools that give children BB's are more marketable than ones that don't.
  12. I don't completely disagree with the finger deal. It's just most scenarios in which they are practiced are highly unlikely. I can certainly see if it"s a choke scenario or a full on grab and held scenario where the fingers are grabbed, that this would get you out. But while still in the free movement phase, is just low percentage for anyone.
  13. I'm not sure you are going to get the emotional response and adrenaline dumped from this. I know for me going to other schools(where I don't know anyone) to train live and going to comps give me a similar feeling of being in a confrontation. However there have been times when I compete and am completely calm. The few altercations I have been in, I have also been calm, even with having a gun waved in my face. I relate this to normal everyday life. Emotionally I get upset when I trip over my wifes high heels because they were left out and because I think it's preventable. lol. But whenever something very serious happens it's more like I just sit back and watch life happen. Even when it happens to me. I guess that's me learning to let go of the things I have no control over.
  14. I whole heartedly agree with the root of what you are saying. As forward as it seems and agree with Sensei8 as well, that it surely doesn't include everyone. Tallgeese.... You just taught me something about myself. I never really put things together like that. I mean I have those pieces of the puzzle scattered out on the table, but you put them together for me.
  15. My school and my wife are my world. I don't have another job, it's all I do. I just opened up my new location a few months ago after having a fallout, which is for another thread maybe. But I have had a great response from the area(I believe I have touched on this already) and I have a lot of support and think I am positioned well. My school is on the corner of a major intersection which is rare and there is an elementary school opposite from me and a gas station on the other corner. Location alone has done wonders. I am about to make some referral cards so that students can get credit for sign ups. My referral program is as follows. 16 referrals (that become members) and achieving purple belt level will make them lifetime members. Purple is minimum of three years but on average takes longer. What do you think of this?
  16. actually thats not a myth we do it at my dojo. because its true. even now i've been told at white belt w/ black tip level i could put someone in a coma so what will i be like when i get to black belt...just with a kizami i could kill someone. and so could half the BB at my dojo. in australia its a legal thing What is a Kizami??
  17. Saweeeet! I love judo! Toss someone like that in the street and it's "Game over man!"
  18. Thanks! I really appreciate the information. I am always looking to grow myself and the Nation.
  19. I keep getting an error tryin to watch the vid. Do you set the armbar up with a cross choke and then reaching in (with arm nearest the legs) and scooping the bicep? if that makes sense. I take knee on belly and immediately attack the choke yes. Then I bring my knee mounted leg and move my knee into the chest and my foot under his armpit. It's usually easy to do because he's defending the choke. Now I bring my other knee in and almost kneel on his head (you can do this...but it's kinda mean so I usually don't). From this point I either finish the choke, or take the arm closest to me for the armbar. Just depends what he gives me. Similar to this but starting in knee on belly Gotcha, I do one with the way you describe the legs with the knee high and foot in armpit. But say it's the right knee in belly then my left hand goes for the far side lapel, thumb in and press down across the throat for the choke. When the opponent reaches up with the near side arm, my right hand reaches into the bicep or bend of the arm pull up and spin on them into place. Legs exactly as you mentioned. Learned this from Carlson before he past years ago.
  20. I just did the pizza box thing. 10,000 pizza boxes! I also keep up with how people heard about us and review it before ever doing anything twice or new. I have some very dedicated students and it seems all are sending out referrals. It's the best because it,s free of course. I have as many or am approaching as many students as schools that have been in the area for years. I just opening my new location 3 months ago. Another question. In my ten years of experience, the summer months have always been the slowest. Does anyone else find this to be true?
  21. I'm more talking in terms of employees and students dating.
