  1. Omerta by Lamb of God It starts by saying: Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, You are forgiven." Such is the Rule of Honor.
  2. Let me tell ya'll a story. I was standing in line talking to a friend and student who is a professional fighter.(amateur at the time) He was on season 8 of the Ultimate Fighter and i'm a bjj black belt. So any way, we're talking and this guy comes up standing very close to us staring. So finally he says what do you guys do about multiple attackers. (we were talking about training and wearing fight tshirts) So I said get out of there. Be a track star. He disagreed and started to compare styles and said they do this all the time. We passively engaged in this convo for a bit before I finally said, well if you are that sure, lets go outside and you can prove it by fighting the two of us. Now his tune changed. Well no cuz you guys train! Whatever. My point is if you have any kind of physical, aggressive individuals ready to kick your head in, you are naive to think you can stand against them. Best thing is to be aware of your surroundings. Recognize a situation as it arises and remove yourself. Right guys?
  3. Should school owners use contracts to do business? Or should they go month to month? and what about the packages?? People paying way up front for black belts???
  4. Well put. And I understand. And MMA is intimidating and I personally do not accept that title although I have fair stand up from boxing and muay thai. I am provoking a bit here but with good intention. Everything I am hearing is why I started this thread. I appreciate the responses.
  5. Very good. He would be an asset. But we are talking about martial arts right? Learning how to defend ones self? I don't mean forms champion or any of this although again the public generally can't distinguish between what's real and what's not. Does his experience globally have any bearing?
  6. I think thats like saying a guy doing flight simulation for 20 years is as experienced as a pilot who's been flying for 20 yrs.
  7. Ok all. Assuming you have 2 very capable instructors. Does The others experience mean nothing?
  8. Again true story. all what I am looking for. All valid points. I'm still listning. lol
  9. True story. There is the side you seek to it. It's the side that keeps us healthy. And the best guys make it look beautiful. But I understand what you mean. And your perspective is appreciated. Thank you.
  10. What things should one look for in making a decision in choosing a martial arts school and instructor?
  11. Well how would you know if he is a good instructor if you don't know anything about the style. I mean he is the black belt! lol And did you read everything I just said?? Ok let me rephrase the question. Let's add: and is a great instructor!
  12. Ok this is where I stand. I believe the Instructor should be accomplished and should market that well. An indication of his instruction will be that he has world class students as well. Now am I in favor of being able to sell ketchup pop sickles to women in white dresses yes. My point was the power of marketing. As for being self centered most are and are just very good at suppressing it to they public and students. As for picking apart my terminology like general public and such. Irrelevant. And i'm asking sincerely for your opinions. Not a debate. Just interested in what people think. Of course a heated debate would make this thread long and interesting! LOL
  13. Major styles have some outlet or another. All of which obviously are sport. So what does everyone think is important to the general public? A dominant figure in there field or just some cat in a belt. The general public is ignorant of the differences in styles much less the differences in instructors. There is no regulation on who can and is teaching and why or what their credentials are or should be. Truth be known you can sell the public a product that doesn't exist if it's marketed properly.
  14. How important is it to everyone to train with an accomplished instructor?
  15. If your blue belts are choking the crap out of the white belts as they should. Then they should be able to pass on the info. But as to whether they have instructor status... no. And do they have any business teaching? That depends on the areas access to a black belt.
  16. True story. All my blue belts can apply them and teach them in detail. Of course they have lots of time and practice in front of them to become efficient at catching them on higher level practitioners but the average requirement is that they can teach what they know. If your experience differs that's because the most bjj programs are bogus with the instructor having little to no formal training with an actual black belt themselves. When looking into a school that claims to offer bjj, be sure to look into the instructors credentials.
  17. I see you are in tennessee. Who is the instructor teaching bjj? what are his credentials. beware of bogus programs
  18. My suggestion is find a BJJ school with a strong top game.
  19. Applying chokes properly and effectively is fairly simple. An average blue belt in BJJ can teach the basic chokes.
