Nice going JiuJitsuNation and well deserved. -
do you tell people that you do martial arts
Jeffrey replied to shotokan-ste's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have recruited a few friends. A couple didn't make it in the first 3 months and one just got his green belt last night. I will have one more of my friends join in the fall. I'm very careful when recruiting friends. MA is not for everyone. Some people have just watched to many movies and don't realize how much work it real is. -

Congrats GeoGiant. I'm glad everything went well for you. Getting up and performing your Kata in front of everyone can be difficult. -

Congrats !! -
No problem. I was thinking about you last night as we had our first night of grading. When I looked at the pool of sweat beneath my feet and said to myself the proof is on the floor I realized another stream had crossed my path. I held my head up high with that little grin on my face. Thank you.

One thing that was missed in the topic is that a river meets other rivers on the way. Each one learns something from each stream or creek no matter how small or how big. Add at Sensei8's request.

One could have the same discussions regarding the hair on our heads. Does that not define who we are to a certian degree? Outward apperances often lead others to judge who we are. I prefer to disregard apperance and get to know the person inside. It is that person that is a genuine part of who we all are. Not the face or beard. And that is my 2 cents.

Here's a crazy idea.... with you vast knowledge of your art.... write a book in all that spare time. Just a thought. From your posts you seem to be a great writer. A little something to pass down.

1] Which one is your style's organization a proponent of? Methodology 2] Which one are you a proponent of? Both 3] Which one is your martial art based on? Methodology: 4] Which one is your martial arts dependant on? Both only because certain concepts were added/changed at one point in time to suit the particular style we study today. 5] Are they seperate beliefs? YES 6] Are they said same beliefs? Varies from school to school 7] Are they interchangable? Tough Question. Some Head Instructors would have a good discussion about this one. IMO one can not live without the other. 8] Can ones belief survive without the other? Yes to a certain degree. The art would not progress without Ideology and the ability to adapt to changing times and values. 9] Can one become a prisoner of either belief? For sure. You need to grow and without Ideology I don’t think this can happen. 10] Does one belief or another truly matter? Methodology: for sure. Karate is based on tradition and without those set of basic procedures (which can change over time or style differences) you have no base to begin with.

We had a different approach for our club. With only a few black belts for some of the kid’s classes we asked if we could come in early and help out. We could see the belt ranks were being combined and some of the instructors trying give as much individual attention as they could. Now a couple of us help out with the kids. Like it was said above it gives us a great opportunity to learn as well as pass on what we know. Once in while we get to run the work out before splitting off into belt rank groups which is fun and a small extra work out for ourselves. We volunteer our time and ask nothing in return. What we do receive is the reward of each child getting a little more attention.
