  1. This hasn't been all that bad. The only problem I'm having is sore hands and wrists. Maybe becuase I'm over 40.
  2. Hey Krypto, Where do train out of? I'm based in edmonton.
  3. Already on it Wildman. Someone at practice mentioned that also. Good thing you guys are smart or I'd be repairing that shoulder again.
  4. Chuck Lidel swears by these. Burpees are the king of workouts. I like to do them in sets one right after the other. Start by doing 1 then 2, then 3 till you can't move. So far I have never gotten past 15 before. It's the pushups that do me in every time.
  5. Andy100, I like the way you think. I started doing the first set yesterday and while wating began doing leg raises to pass the time. I have a hard time just sitting there doing nothing. I have a limited time to work out so I like to make the best of it. I'm going to give this a try for a few weeks and see how it goes. If I don't likeit will switch it up and try your way. Or hell just try both at the same time. Do one in the mornign and one at night. I think it is more of see if I can do it more than wanting to do a 100 push ups in a row. I think doing a 100 reps of anything is counter productive. Better to add weight or an incline to the excerise.
  6. I fear that every one has their own views on Kata. Every school depending on lineage will do something a bit different. The only way to find out which one is right is to have trained with the founding members. Over time things are changed. Even the original Pinan’s created by Itosu and pasted on to Hironori Ohtsuka and few others have changed over time. The question that should be asked are do these changes make them a less effective tool in training? Forms/kata should evolve taking into account physics and modern body mechanics which were not around at the time of creation. Itosu changed tode into what we know today. Is wrong for us to change it with so much more science in fighting arts? Tradition is a hard thing to let go of. Personally I like tradition. It is a tribute to founding members.
  7. Has anyone ever done this? http://hundredpushups.com/ I was going to give it a go but wanted to know if works first. Push ups have always been a weak point with me.
  8. “Never take a laxative and a sleeping pill on the same night”
  9. Yes Krypto that is more like what we do. I'm not sure where the first one came from but it was way off.
  10. Good Points. There is a Wado Ryu Club I will check out in Sept. when they take new students. It's on different nights so it will not conflict. I also believe what you take from something is what makes it good. There is a best for everyone. The Shintani clubs are really big here in Alberta so it seems larger than looking at it globally. Most small towns have one. You did put me the path to reading more on Karate and I thank you for that.
  11. Hello Chitsu, I found this and thought it would qualify your thoughts about Shintani being a fringe group. I found this in one of the student club manuals. “ In Canada, the official sanctioning body for karate is the National Karate Association, founded in 1964 by Masime Tsuruoka. The NKA has provincial affiliates in many Canadian Provinces, including Alberta and Ontario. Sensei Shintani knew Sensei Tsuruoka, and spoke favourably of him, but the Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation remains separate from the NKA to this day, and is not affiliated with any major national or international sanctioning bodies. In Alberta, only the Zen Kuren Wado Kai Karate organization is a member of Karate Alberta, and by extension, the NKA. It is affiliated with the JKF - Wado Kai organization in Japan. A Canadian affiliate to WIKF also exists, is headquartered in BC, and is a member of Karate BC and the NKA.” That being said it does appear that the Shintani Wado Kai karate Federation is one of the largest organization practicing Wado Kai karate in Canada. There are over 100 clubs, 900+ students in Alberta, and roughly 2400 students nation-wide.
  12. We have him coming to do a clinic in March I think. He is known for picking apart the bunkai in kata. It should be a good clinic.
  13. You’re right, after watching the Yondan links I can see the differences very clear. In the Sandan and Yondan kata it was clear but Shodan and Nidan took a bit of time to see the differences. I just began learning Yondan last night at practice so when I got home I watched the videos a few times. This gave way to a late night “thanks ”. I also took the time to research the Wado groups. I will take a bit of time tonight to do a little research on the Wado principles. So I have to ask…. is one better than the other? I know that is most often the hardest question to answer as everyone has their own thoughts as what is better but you seem pretty opened minded to these things. I still consider myself new to Karate after 1 year. I advanced quickly through the first 3 ranks because I had 5 years in a Kempo/Kung Fu 15 years ago. Most of the blocks, punches etc. remained the same at the lower ranks. My body remembered (not the mind) these and it allowed me to advance a little more quickly. It became more of a terminology learning than anything. Learning the new Kata came quickly with a bit of practice leaving only the different muscle groups used in Martial Arts to rebuild. Pain was my friend for a while.
  14. Week 2 of the 100 hundred push ups. Class tonight so that should be enough since we still do the 40 mins workout with cardio. Like Tallgeese I can't wait for the snow to clear so I get out there and run in the great outdoors.
  15. Not to mention the huge amount of Mcdojo's that pop up. These self proclaimed masters of this and that are what really get to me. They take a blend of a few arts and put it all together and call it Temple Kung Fu or something. Yes I was a victim of this for a few months before I wised up and join a real school. Didn't take long to figuer out.
  16. Thanks for the info Chitsu. I'll have to take a closer look. Being a little new to the Karate practice I find everyday I learn something new.
  17. Thanks for the warm welcome.
  18. Not to date myself but Chuck Norris in “Octagon” The sai fight scene is awesome.
  19. Hello all, Just here to introduce myself and say hi to everyone. I study Wado Kai Karate. I started a year ago and love every minute of it. I used to do Kung Fu as a young adult for about 5 years and took a 15 year break. I know, sad but true. I enrolled my daughter in one of the local Karate schools thinking it would good to get her started at age 7. After a couple of weeks she asked me why I don’t do it. I didn’t have an answer. She than went on to let me know that I coach her brothers hockey team and that I should do Karate with her because that was fair. Wow, outsmarted by a 7 year old. So I enrolled in the adult class. The first couple of classes were a bit of a wake up call from taking the 15 year holiday. 1 year later my daughter and I work out at home and enjoy this special time together. My wife has gotten involved doing the workout in the kids class and my youngest can’t wait to enroll next year when he is 7 also. In the last year Karate has been a most positive influence on my family. We have made some great friends in our new Karate family. Self-defense is not the only benefit to getting involved. The family is now hooked for life. Thanks, Jeffrey
  20. Worst was a torn deltoid muscle done while at a bunkai clinic. I didn't think it was that bad and still went to class and that night what ever was holding it together decided it was done. Took me out for 2 months. Of course I could still practice Katas but only with one hand.
  21. Hello all, I’m a Wado Kai Student Yon Kyu (4th Kyu) having just got that green belt 1 month ago. I find that both are very much the same with the emphasis on taisabaki. The kata’s almost mirror each other. In Wado Kai there is a difference in Pinan Shodan and Nidan. It seems these are reversed. In Wado Kai you learn Nidan from Wado Ryu first which is Shodan in Wado Kai. I’m not an expert but I used the video from the Wado Ryu kata’s to help practice as they are the same. But I could be wrong being a newbie. Jeffrey
