Tournaments?
KickChick replied to rabid hamster's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
The deadline on this one is fast approaching ... like tomorrow! A little more than 6 hrs. away from me .... but anyone interested in say, Canada or upper state NY area... check this open tournament out .... The Battle of Upstate New York is an annual Open Tournament. Here any style of martial arts may enter to compete. They (ITU) have special guests attending for pictures and autographs: Cynthia Rothrock, Richard Norton, Don 'The Dragon' Wilson, GrandMaster Pan Qing Fu, Sifu Vincent Lyn, GrandMaster George Dillman. Carradine was supposed to be there but will not be appearing due to being in China to make a new movie. http://www.taekwondo.to/battle_of_upstate_ny.htm -

Several things to bear in mind when following a nutritional regimen (I hate that 4-letter word d-i-e-t) 1. To eat breakfast! When you skip it your metabolism slows down and you will notice that you will have low blood sugar all day long because of it. When you do get the chance to eat you are so hungry that you may make the wrong meal choice ... pigging out on junk food or a candy bar to sustain you. If you hate to eat first thing .... have a whey protein shake with a banana or nutrition bar (I've been having Oatmeal Raisin Slimfast bars).... Breakfast jump starts your metabo 2. Waiting too long before or in between meals also lowers blood sugar levels and increases cravings for sugar and to binge. So after you have your breakfast keep your metabo going by eating small meals every 3-4 hours, with the metabo going strong you will inhibit muscle tissue loss and use fat for fuel. They say the key to losing bodyfat is meal frequency. 3. Your body starts to store fat the minute it gets the impulse that you are starving or if you eat too many calories. The amount of calories you eat in just one day is doesn't matter as much as how many you eat within one meal. You can ingest all your daily calories in one huge meal but your body will only use the say 500 calories it needs at the moment and then stores the leftovers say the other 1000 as fat to be used later. That's if you do end up using it! 4. Each meal should be balanced nutritionally. Say 1/4 protein 1/4 fat and 1/2 carbs ... important to feed the brain, repair/build muscle and fuel metabolism. Contrary to popular (Atkins) belief ....carbs do not make you fat. Overconsuming fat and total calories will make you fat. Overconsuming carbs (eating more than 70%) increases your risk of getting diabetes, but not eating enough carbs can place your muscle gains, metabolism and endurance at risk. One thing I do is not to have any carbs after 5:00 .... if not used immediately for energy it too will in turn into glucose. 5. Bon is correct about those fat-free foods! They do contain high amounts of sugar which causes your body to over produce insulin which will in turn store that excess sugar as fat. So its better to have a small piece of a sweet treat than a larger fat-free dessert. 6. Write down what you eat ... you will be amazed at your findings.

Granted the music isn't that good (check out the composers credentials!) ... it's the whole idea I was getting at. --->feedback Yes, monkeygirl we are pretty much aware of how the ISKA uses musical kata .... (one winner used the William Tell Overture ) It does add oompf to the kata "performance" .... would it work for students trying to perfect the fluidity of their forms/katas/hyungs? For someone who has no rhythm for music .... would their kata/form/hyung have any rhythm?

I came across this web site http://www.kickintracks.com/ .... view a RealVideo of TKD Hyungs --Toi Gye and Do San set to music. What do you think? Who here has performed kata with music? Would you? Do you think it would help you gain fluidity and cadence? _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. Well .... that's what I thought ... sheesh I never would have started this thread. My point was to be ....we can all draw some parallels here .... no matter from what country we may come from ... you all have your evils to contend with! So since I opened this thread up .... I will close it up.

Nice link Bitseach ... I plan on using that boxing ab crunch on my class tomorrow!! The lower belly .... otherwise known to us moms as the "baby pouch" .... sometimes this area is stretched out due to this fact. (Take it from me!) Abs need to be strengthen again .... and then for women this is the area where "fat" tends to congregate ---> the lower ab area! Cut out the fat in your diet!! Diet has alot to do with it .... all the crunches in the world won't flatten out a flabby belly.... but together with the right ab work (Simply: Regular crunches with heels together legs turned out low, will target this area also!) .... you'll achieve results!

eyes
KickChick replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Keep in mind too that when sparring you can also "use" your eyes to feint or misdirect. Magicians use this same concept by distracting you into looking at the wrong place at the right time. Same thing can be done in a sparring situation so that he or she won't see your attack coming. -
Heavy Bag (wavemaster) kick/punch drills .... and CARDIO!!! .... our cardiokickbox 1 hour non-stop workout which includes the stretches, ab work, push ups, squat/lunges, bit of pilates..... since I have been doing this I haven't found anything that incorporates a little bit of everything so your're crosstraining and not bored with the same old. Lots of sweat!!!!

I got something entirely different out of reading that article. .... kinda made me feel better about myself. Although I train in TKD, I am by no means "flashy" ... My goal is to execute the very best side kick I can. Although I can do those "flashy" kicks TKD incorporates and enjoy "demonstrating" them, it is not my personnal forte and I wouldn't streetfight using such techniques --- I'll leave that for Jackie Chan. But there are many TKD stylists and other "flashy" martial artists that have been dissed on numerous occasions here on the forum because their extraordinary aerial acrobatic kicks aren't "practical" especialling for "streetfighting". I never get "flashy" when I spar ... "flashy" is for kata/form the "art" of the style I feel. The basics work best when it comes down to "fighting/sparring"... taking "physics" into account ... and developing the body to encounter force, to be in good physical and mental condition.... the martial arts produces all this and more. He makes the statement that we all practice martial arts for different reasons .... it need not be practical for the streets ....(yes times have changed there are guns on the street not nunchakus or kamas !!) I agree. This is the "gist" of what he is saying:

.... another point: give it some time to work too. I was taking it for about 2 months and wasn't seeing any significant difference in the "clicking" of my femoral ligaments. So I stopped. Thanks to Yoda's advice I went back on it to give it another chance. I usually take a night now after dinner (need to take on full stomach) everyday without fail (I used to forget now and then .... and after several months now I have seen a dramatic difference! I am way too impatient I guess! _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-05-13 14:43 ]

In search of style
KickChick replied to Rs-Apocolypse's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Welcome to KarateForums Rs-Apocolypse .... I will move your post to the proper forum. Suggest that you visit the schools in your area offering martial arts instruction and determine what style is best for you. You may get ideas here as to what style you may have interest in .... but schools differ in so many ways. No kicks? How about a boxing gym?? -
Yes we sure do! ....

Currently taking 2 classes weekly of TKD .... teaching 1-2 cardio kickboxing classes a week and train at home ..stretching/crunches/weights everyday 30 min total and work on TKD kicks and hyungs at home 3 days a week (once during weekend and either before or after class time). As an over 40 it is crucial for me to stretch every morning to keep flexibility. Cardio is also very important for endurance & metabo (as you all know that decreases with age ) and then the weight goes on! I also take vitamin supplements and have gone back to the glucosamine (see threads on this supplement in Health & Fitness) which has helped my sore "clicking" joints. as a matter of fact .... another year older today _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. Congrats monkeygirl (and bro')
-
With regular participation in a physical activity or sport, (which does include martial arts) you can be an inspiration to friends and family by becoming a presidential award winner .... requirements listed on site. Nice certificate and patch for your dobok/gi Go to: http://www.fitness.gov/sports/sports.html
-
Thanks for the info monkeygirl ... I can better understand "where you are coming from" now. Our school is far more traditional TKD ... different belts (we have 3 degrees for childrens brown) but we call it 1st deg. then comes 2nd deg. and then 3rd. deg. No jr. Black (but I do wish our school had that rank). If you are interested in viewing our requirement curriculum (yes would be a long post!) Go to http://www.aitkd.com click Tae Kwon Do and then choose from above belt requirements. .... again good luck
-
Best of Luck to you monkeygirl! (and bro') I have a feeling you'll do just fine! Hey monkeygirl ... could you please tell us more about your grading system ... I am interested in hearing just what your "modern American TKD" (is it ATA?) school is all about .... what hyungs/forms .... sparring .... belt system and requirements to advance.
