Ok what do you folks think? I am thinking of supplementing my Training in Goju Ryu with some BJJ. I have some boxing experience and year of goju. Do you think it would be counter productive to take a BJJ class once a week along with Goju. I am a purple belt (intermediate) and want to stay in Goju, but would like to know some of the very basics of BJJ.

what are the original kata as taught by the founder of Okinwan Goju ryu? I am studying Goju but it seems that many of the kata I've learned are not the original or so I'm told. Can anyone help me out?

Wearing Gi outside of Dojo?
quinteros1963 replied to Seija's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'll wear my pants on my way from the Dojo. I don't wear the top though. The rule at our dojo is to never wear your obi/belt outside of the Dojo. As a matter of fact I have on gi pants right now. Its a pair I bought separate and they are very comfortable (not a part of my uniform). -
We are usually allowed to test every 3 mos(in some cases sooner). Thats not a belt promotion, its a stripe or tip in between belts. So its 6 mos from belt to belt up to brown, then it takes over a year and a half from brown to shodan. It takes nearly four years to go from beginner to black belt.

Do You Favor a Side When Sparring?
quinteros1963 replied to joesteph's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I favor my left forward, as I am right handed and prefer from the time I've spent boxing. I can fight from a south Paw stance but I use different techniques from that stance. Ultimately I'd like to be able to fight the same out of both stances. Right now I'm like tow different fighters in the different stances. I guess it can be confusing to my opponent. At any rate I'm working on it. Always continue to train! -
My sensei would say = rights in the dojo. Besides if you Take it easy on some of the females at the dojo, they will kick your but! Brian, since you mentioned the chest protectors, are there specific rules for sparring with females? I remember a past posting in which there was sparring between a male and female student, but the manner in which he sparred (he was the one who posted) was objected to. One of the responses was that he should have checked with his sensei if there were certain rules he was to follow. When I took fencing, my female fencing partner wore a different protector than I did, so a rule wasn't needed. No, there aren't any rules differences. Same for all.

I started boxing as a kid on and off, primarily becuase my dad did it. He was a fan so naturally I became a fan. In my later years I started going to a gym in Wny called Casal's and fell in love with the sport all over again. Several of the guys at the gym also practiced Ma and I took interest. After moving away I couldn't find a gym until my son started taking Goju Ryu. After taking him and watching his classes I decided to get involved to better assist my son. Now I am hooked, just like I was back at Casal's. Thanks Ray, Steve and Bruce!

We just added another day so now I am in for 3 and sometimes four days a week (up to 8 hours of training per week). I am seeing a huge difference in my techniques due to the increased reps. I hope my body can hold up.

It seems that most schools are more or less the same. I've come to the conclusion that when its time to test my sensei will let me know. I want to reach shodan so badly, I can't wait! However I am learning that its all about the journey. I am beginning to grasp new techniques and love it. I love MA thanks for the posts. So I'll wait the usual 2-3 for stripes and 5-6 months between color promotions.

Itching for a grading
quinteros1963 replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Its great to reach a certain rank. I can certainly identify with you on being ready to move on. If you are ready and are certain of it what difference does it make if you are or are not recognized as a 2nd dan. In my opinion its the skill level that tells all. You may be a 2nd dan in skill but not yet officially recognized. Your Instructor knows best. Always continue to train. -
Just Curious. What style of MA do you practice? How long have you been involved and whats your current rank/grade (color and kyu/rank)? Goju ryu 8 mos 9th kyu orange belt I was involved in boxing for a few years prior to goju.

Quickest to Blackbelt status?
quinteros1963 replied to hawkeyes's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'd say 3.5 - 4 years. If you train hard and train often, it may come sooner. Much the same way in college if you take a heavy schedule and do well in those courses you will graduate sooner than someone who is attending part time. So I again I say train hard, train often, practice on your own, and you will improve toward your goal. THere is no substitiute for hard work. Remember a black belt is a white belt that did not give up! -
I think its a matter of choice. I see it as a symbol, so why not have more than one? Do you own more than one gi? Why not have more than one belt? I'm a long way from black belt so perhaps I dont understand.

Should young black belts instruct the adult class
quinteros1963 replied to granitemiller's topic in Karate
Nope! If that "junior bb" has not completed the same requirments as an adult black belt, then he is not a black belt. The junior title seems to be something that was invented as a motivation to youngsters. So they aren't really black belts and therfore should not teach a class. While they may be more experinced than others in class, they should not teach class. Warm-ups or demonstrating a kata is fine teaching, no. For those who say its ok, would you go to a junior bb's school to learn your art? -
Quickest to Blackbelt status?
quinteros1963 replied to hawkeyes's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
2 years in tkd. The quickest way to shodan in goju is probably 3.5, but very unlikley. Just continue to train and it will come. After all, a black belt is just a white belt that did not give up! I train to learn, the black belt, while an incentive is not the ultimate goal. I'd like to teach someday, so that will mean 3 degree, which is years away. -
I've noticed that even within the same styles, there are many differences in colored belts. What is the color progression in your syle. We go : white gold 1 and 2 orange 1 and 2 purple 1 and 2 green 1,2and 3 brown 1,2, and 3 black

How much time should there be between promotions? Some believe that you should stay at a certain rank for X amount of months before promotion. I say that one should be able to test once he or she can perform set requirements. If that means progressing rapidly thru the lower kyu ranks (10,9.8,7th), so be it.

What Dan Level is appropriate for instructing?
quinteros1963 replied to granitemiller's topic in Karate
If a shodan is "just the begining" he/she should not be a head instructor of his/her own school, Any more than a high school graduate should become a teacher. Tutor or assistant is ok. I would say ni or maybe even san dan to be an instructor. I'm leaning toward san dan, but who am I? -
Two or Three times per week, but I pay one fee for classes per month. If $ comes into play, you can anly do what your wallet allows. Make sure you practice on your own.
