  1. With the many associations/organizations out there now, with each claiming a world Champion. What does it mean? Come train with World Champ ....... I recieved a letter from a tournament series stating that I was their World Champion for 2009, I just needed to submit the membership fee. I am far from a Champion, but it made me wonder that others make a big deal of being World Champ when trying to attract students from simular orgs. What are the major Org in the USA and the World, that matter? I know that in boxing you have the major orgs, WBA, WBC, IBF; Minor WBO, IBO NABA etc... Perhaps I should win a few more and in the future open a school stating I was a 3 time world Champ! LOL
  2. My kids and I went to see the Karate Kid too. The first thing I saw when I walked in the building was a local TKD school set up giving a free uniform with a 2 week trial. I thought to myself, great marketing. People will leave the movie "amped" about karate and sign up. Great idea! I didn't sign up though as I don't believe the arts should be commercialized. But thats just my opinion.
  3. I'm going to compete in a tournament for the first time in about a year. Its been a while, where's my gear? Just sharing the news.
  4. I was just surprised to hear about it, since I have experience in both Shotokan and Goju. I wonder what I would be ranked in that style? I'm not questioning GKR's authenticity. In my book training is training, what ever floats your boat is fine with me.
  5. There are so many styles of Karate. I met someone today who studies GKR, a combination of Goju Ryu and Shotokan. Who knew? Have you ever heard of it?
  6. Glad you had fun. Continue to train!
  7. We have simular backgrounds as I have trained in boxing of years as well. My advice to you is to either stay away from the shotokan competitions, if you are into martial arts for self defence, or still train in both ways. The way I see it is that as a boxer you are taught to hit hard, often punching thru your opponent. Also you are taught to counter punch, which may mean getting hit before you strike back (you wont win many point sparring matches this way). I have had a hard time making the transition to point sparring for these and many other reasons. I still try it from time to time, but my focus is still self defence (striking hard). You may want to try contiuous sparring.
  8. I currently train in both(as well as boxing), and I should list only karate. I am more of a JKD student in this way as I don't claim either. I just happen to go to a class where the Sensei is certified in Goju and another in Shotokan. I am just a Martial Artist, that will continue to train as long as I am blessed to do so. That refuses to be bound by any one style.
  9. My original instructor has 40 years of experience. He is not Asian and I could care less. I'm all about what you know, not where you are from. I was told by another Instructor that he goes to Japan for his instruction, as to say that my American Sensei was not good enough. IDK way people think the way they do, but thats just how it is.
  10. Thanks, next year I'll may be yudansa in two styles.
  11. I have reached my goal of brown belt yall. Ready for the next challenge! next step is ..... to continue to train!
  12. Is it disrespectful to wear a gi with a different schools patch on it to a new school. I have a realy nice gi from my old school, and don't know if its ok to wear it or not.
  13. Its no big deal in my eyes. What does it really mean? Not much.
  14. Congrats and remember, always continue to train!
  15. Shotokan white yellow orange green blue purple brown 3 - 1 black
  16. Sanchin Taikyoku shodan Taikyoku dai Kosho Seiha Gekisai Ichi Gekisai Ni Senki Dai Sanseiru Saifa Seienchin Anaku Shisochin Heinan shodan Heinan nidan Heinan sandan Heinan Yondan (learning it)
  17. I think it is too expensive. I would not pay that much for classes, but I'm spoiled. I only pay 25 per month.
  18. They are all just different styles of fighting, usually taylored to the creator of his respective style. Kata is nothing but a set of techniques put together to simulate a fight. Certain techniques will lend them selves as better for one style to the next, but at the end of the day the desired result is the same. Find a style that suits you and stick with that.
  19. I'm cool with it now. No matter the rank, I still have alot to learn. I recall many BB's telling me "continue to train and it knowledge will come" or "the belt is no big deal, its just the beggining". So now I am 1st kyu and almost there so I thought, only to realize that there is so much more to learn. I guess I didn't listen or believe them. I thought I would be an expert ready for the movies, the next Yip Man or Jet Li. I see now that a belt is realy no big deal, so now I train for the sake of training. Now that I do my focus is on going back to early kata and breaking them down and I am learning so much from them. Martial Arts and the study of them is such a beautiful journey. I hope that I am able to do this my entire life.
