What do you make of the upcoming bout? How do you see it going? In many ways its like the original UFC bouts. What style is the best? Its a no brainer that Toney is a better boxer, but how many boxers have seen success in the octagon? I know none of them were on the level of Toney, so it should be interesting. Any how who do you like to win?

When I go to tournaments I compete in both Kata and sparring. I just like to compete so I do both. I will say that I loathe point fighting, but its usually included in the entry fee and I hate to waste money even more!

Breaking up is hard to do...new style or not?
quinteros1963 replied to Spodo Komodo's topic in Karate
Going back to your previous school will show that you are humble. Big deal you are not where you think you should be. In my world I try to eliminate "shoulds and Oughts". Things are the way they are and thats it! As a matter of fact they are the way the were meant to be. Keep plugging in Wado, you've earned that rank and noone can take it away from you. You will remember all your techniques in no time at all. Its like riding a bike. As far as the injury goes, who would be in shape after such an accident? Are you worried about how everyone will perceive you when you return? Do you have to be at a certain level of fitness to save face with your friends? I say stick with Wado. -
Should children be given black belts?
quinteros1963 replied to JiuJitsuNation's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I say give the kids a jr black belt. Perhaps with a stripe in the middle of the belt to signify that its a jr rank. When they are older (16-18) allow them to test for the full rank. -

mixing shotokan with street fighting for protection..
quinteros1963 replied to mbt9000's topic in Karate
Shotokan is no more deadly than any other style of karate. I know because I have some experience in that style as well as others. What you put into your training is what you will get from it. Its not the style that makes you, its YOU! Train hard and you will fight hard! Thats the secret. -

quinteros1963 replied to mbt9000's topic in Karate
Sounds intense. The fact is that most training will prepare you for the streets. You have to understand that if you train seriously, you will be able to defeat 80% or more of the people as most don't train to fight. So no matter what the style you will be better off than someone who does not train. I train in Okinawan MA and I feel that I could defend myself if I had to ( but I havent been in a fight in well over 15 years). Continue to train and hopefully you will never have to use your art. -
For sure. I never had the chance to meet him, but my instructor spoke of him often and highly. He was a true master of Okinawan Karate. I am thankful to come in contact with his teachings. May he rest in peace.

In light of the comments and all the MA orgs in the world, I am going to conduct a small "field experiment". I am going to attend several tournaments this year in an attempt to become a world circuit champion. I want to see just how good these tournament martial artist are. This will be very out of character for me, as I've only competed in 2 tournaments in my lifetime. Don't worry I won't make a shirt if I succeed! I just need to figure out which org ( i have a few in mind). Wish me luck!!

Thanks, I enjoy this site. Its like a cyber ma family here. -
I've competed in 2 tournaments in as many years. I think its good to see how you compare with others students outside your dojo and it gives a reference point on how good you are. I plan on going to a few more this year, as I think its a good way to meet other MAists ( I'm new to the area). But once I settle in, I'll compete in two or three a year.

Yes I find it as a huge stress reliever. We don't spar enough in my opinion. We used to go full contact all the time at my old school and now that we dont do it my bp has gone up a few points. So I have some proof that it reduces stress!!!
-
There are two more this July. I'll try and go to at least one of them, cause I had a ball.

I agree. Tournaments are not as demanding as an actual match of 6 3 minute rounds, but you still want to fill energetic. I would have a hi carb meal the nights before and fruit, tuna and plenty to drink the day of.

Changing my dojo... or should I?
quinteros1963 replied to conrad665's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Go and train hard. If the instructor is good and you train hard, it will work out. Besides its only for 2 months and the alternative is no training for the summer. I say continue to train in the summer. Perhaps the dojo will be better because of the example that you set! -
Shhhhh....It's A Secret!
quinteros1963 replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Perhaps you havent found them yet. Doesnt mean they are not there. Continue to train and the secrets will be unlocked! -
I didn't get nervous until I competed in kata, which was first. By the time kumite rolled around i was ready to go. It was fun, I can't wait to do it again.
-
It should be equal by rating each out of 100 and then dividing by three: Kata 80/100 kihon 75/100 kumite 85/100 240\300= 80%

What floor material does your karate school have?
quinteros1963 replied to RJCKarate's topic in Karate
hard wood. I'd prefer something softer but its what we have. Did i mention my feet hurt. -
Mens advanced Kata and Kumite.

I'm in it for fun. I could care less for the awards (my son has them and some are under my bed). I had no idea that they rated events and named champions at the end of the season. Again I find it very surprising that after winning a number of tournaments that are regional at best, that the orgs have the nerve to award a world championship. But, At least I'll have something to tell my grand kids about.

I won!!!!
