In the New Year our Dojo will be doing Kagami Biraki and all are invited to attend. From what I see online this is very grueling. It's a day long. I was wondering what is Kagami Biraki? If one is a Beginner can they participate too or is this for the more experienced? Fran

Hello everyone. I am facing another Grading on December 6. Going from 8th to 7th Kyu. Instead of one black stripe on my Belt I will have two. Then after that I am heading to Green Belt. I notice that with each Grading it seems longer. Wish me luck. Fran

I do Wado Ryu Karate and my favourite Kata is KIHON KATA and PINAN NIDAN. Those are the only two I know so far. Am slowly being taught SANDAN and SHODAN. The first two Kata are easier. I like them best. Fran

Do the Martial Arts run in your family?
nanook660 replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No they don't. I am the only one doing Wado Ryu Karate. Although when my nephew was younger he did TKD. -
I've passed my Test. I am now an 8th. I have one stripe on my belt. Now it's getting harder. I was a tad nervous and Sensei did tell me what I need to work on. But he is impressed with my progress. And I am too. Grading took three hours. 4 Levels were Grading tonight. Now am tired so I bid you all a Good Night. Oyasuminasai Fran

September 25 will be my next Grading for 8th Kyu. Have been practicing and studying my Grading Syllabus Booklet. All I can do is my best. I have improved as my Sensei has complimented me on a few things. Wish me luck. Fran

I try to train at home. I work on kicks blocks punches and Kihon Kata and the Pinans.

Now that we have settled into our new home and have cleared out all the boxes from my Gym/Karate/Workout Room I can practice there. In my mini gym I have weights, aerobic step, a stability ball, some mats. I have enough room to do my Pinans, and Kihon Kata and work on my punches, blocks, and kicks.

Does your school/gym do basics in training?
nanook660 replied to bushido_man96's topic in Health and Fitness
Our Class we do a warm up. Then we line up according to rank kneel and bow. Then we do the basics. Going up and down the Dojo doing Basic Kicks/Blocks/Punches. Sometimes we do Kihon Kata as a whole class. Then we are broken off into our Ranks and we work on our various lessons. -
My Karate Class is held at the YMCA so I have access to the gym, pool, and other classes as well. I try to go to the gym twice a week on the off days when I am not doing Karate. It does help.

I've only started Wado Ryu so I only know Kihon Kata Pinan Nidan Pinan Shodan Pinan Sandan I like Kihon Kata and Pinan Nidan the most. Those I know. The others I've just started learning them and am still lost when doing them. But in time I will get a handle on those as well.

I agree it's not what karate or any other form of Martial Arts is about. I agree with everyone here. I am a beginner and we are constantly reminded the true meaning of Wado Ryu and each time I listen and take it to heart.

I just started Wado Ryu and I am glad that I am not the only one having trouble with Kumite. It is hard but as the others say it will come in time. Relax and keep trying and eventually it will all come together. My problem is I think to much, worry about my techniques, and am too stiff. Hang in there my friend and eventually we'll be Kumite Masters.

I thought I would let you all know that I did talk to him tonight and he was unware that he was being a little rough but glad I told him. Tonight was easier. Thanks everyone for your input. It is very helpful.

I was wondering if I am the only one that has sore feet and sore ankles after Karate Class. My ankles are very weak that I am worried about twisting them or injuring them. Does anyone have any suggestions on ankle strengthening exercises that I can do? and Do those ankle supports really help? I've tried them and they are tight and seem to make my ankles ache more. Fran

I am getting there slowly. Sensei allows me to sit cross legged. I work at it every night at trying to sit in Seiza.

I was wondering if anyone here could offer me some advice. When we do pair works and we do Ippon Me #1 (Jodan Uke) and Nihonme #2 (Gedan Barai) since we are a small number at the 9th Level (there are 3 of us and I am the only girl) we are paired with 8th and 7th Kyu. I always seem to get paired with this big strong guy and he tends to be a bit rough on me. He twists me really hard and his punch to my back really hurts. Last week he wedged his knee into my knee and pushed it at an angle and it did hurt Should I continue to suck it up and bear it or should I ask Sensei not to pair me with him? Thanks

I am practicing at home and I am getting there slowly. Hi nanook660, I notice your avatar displays a Wado Ryu Renmei / Academy badge. If you are with this group your are well equipped. Mr Shiomitsu is a very knowledgeable instructor who is an expert in how to perform correct wado "za rei". As far as the pain is concerned, you should ask your sensei, as it may be something to do with your body posture and how you are distributing your weight. If you are allowing your buttocks to rest on your heels for example, you are sitting too far back. This could be forcing the tops of your feet into the ground. If you are pitching forward the weight will be pushing through your knees etc. Also bear in mind that many of us westerners just ain't built to sit in this position for long (overweight). So it is not easy, but you should continue as it is an important part of Wado. Ask sensei. My feet do not bend. The tops of my feet do not touch the floor when I try to sit in Seiza. I have been told that it will come as I get more flexible.

I have one of those Sparring Vests that tie up in front. Blue dots on one side Red dots on the other. I take it too class all the time. I could not find one that is large enough that goes under the Gi. And personally the ones that have just the cup inserts I feel do not add protection. Sure the breasts are protected but what about the rest of the chest. I feel more comfortable with the Vest. I

Mine is "Shock Doctor" Place it in hot water, then on your teeth, then dunk it in Cold water.I too have your problem and my Mouth guard does fit. My Sensei told us that we can also go to the Dentist and have one made. But they do cost more doing that way.
