Strangulations and chokes
tallgeese replied to david123's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I'd agree that by blue in BJJ one should be versed in alot of chokes and at least be on their way to being able to teach them well. Blue's a pretty big rank as far as time and experience goes. Most schools with blues of any time will use them to help new people along. -
today- 2.5 mile run back/bis

today- Again, back to teaching CT for another week. 3.5 mile run abs back/bis

Your Martial Artists Bucket List!
tallgeese replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hmm.... good question. One that's kind of evolved over the years. I guess that it'd be a couple of trips to train. One to Hawaii to train at one of Nova Uniao schools there. My coach's coach teaches out there. Next up, a trip to Brazil, again to train BJJ. I would like to earn my bb in BJJ. That's really become my focus in training of late. I've ranked where I want to rank in everything else I've done, so I have no driving need to attain more rank in anything else. But BJJ has really captured me. Again, good question. Some great responses in here. -

Bingo, bushido man. Timing, realisim, accuracy, ect. are all vicitms of excessive kata. To me, kata has kind of had it's day and gone. At one time, it was probabily cutting edge training technology that was needed based on the political situation of the day. Now, we are under no such constraints. We can do two man work without fear of political reprocussions. Furter, as with all things, training has evoloved. There are now methods that can eclipse kata in both learning time and combative efficiency. If one likes kata based on cultural reverence or tradion, that's fine. But as a training tool for combatives there are much more effective methods of transmitting knowledge and sharpening skills.

I don't think there's anything wrong at all with cops training in deadly force tactics. We carry guns, why not have similar knowldege and training unarmed. Not to mention, there are many less life threatening tactics, even at bb level, than most would suppose. Far less. Now, should we train with the goal of that possiblity in mind. Yes, so I think that's easy enough an answer. I also think that it's not all that deep a question and fail to see how the answer in dodging the question. The op asked, where's your war, there's my example. That's largely why I train now. The rest being habit at this point. Often, we tend to over-analize these things. Realistically, I think most of the aswers given answer the question at face value.

as a cop, it's actually much more common for me to put hands on people than it is to do any of the other things you listed. I've put unarmed skills to work plenty during my time, more than any other physical set I train for. So, for me, that's a good reason to train.

There are a few contenders for me. October's Baby and the Black Company, and the Tyranny of the Night, all by Glen Cook. The Simarillioin by Tolkien is really right up there as well.
